« Kazmir Calls for Veterans | Main | Joba The Starter? »
The Tigers anticipated this. Carlos Guillen's okay with it. Despite signing Guillen in March to a 4 year deal for $48MM to begin next season, the shortstop is going to be moving across the diamond sooner than expected to play first base. The move is designed to protect his knees from the physical stresses of SS.
Tim argued that 4/48 was a bargain as long as he remained the Tigers' shortstop. Unfortunately, it appears Manager Jim Leyland has had to talk him into moving to first, despite Guillen's condition last week that the Tigers had to bring in a gold glove caliber replacement. However, Guillen now believes it'll be better for the team and the longevity of his career.
Who then will be playing short for the Tigers in 2008? Omar Vizquel, David Eckstein, and Cesar Izturis are free agents that stick out. The Detroit Free Press notes there "could be other shortstops available in trade." Edgar Renteria seems to be a popular choice among MLBTR readers. Or will the Tigers make another attempt at Jack Wilson from Pittsburgh? Or would they stick with the in-house option of Ramon Santiago? The apparent good news is there are many options.
This also confirms the obvious: the Tigers have no plans to bring Sean Casey back.

i heard of this guy. he plays 3B right now but he used to play short. he isnt technically a free agent yet but i wouldnt be surprised if he went to a team that needed a SS. just food for thought ;)

I wonder who he is......
Could his name be Alex Rodriguez?

As a reds fan, I'm looking forward to what Wayne Krivsky does this off-season. Do you think Alex Gonzalez would be an option for the Tigers? If so, what do you see Cincy getting in return?

I don't doubt the Astros would be willing to ship Adam Everett and his GG-caliber defense. Eric Bruntlett would be a fine replacement.

The tigers should have traded for Jack Wilson when they had the chance. From the rumors that swirled they could had him a pretty reasonable rate. Off the subject I think Sean Casey would be a great pinch hitter off the bench late in a game. The guy never strikes out. I dont know if he would really want to be on a team where he knows he is a designated to the bench, but he doesn't have any other options.

Wow, I think this is probably a horrible idea ~ why would they take a premier hitting SS who can still play very good SS and make him an average hitting 1B? But I’m a Tribe fan so as long as it isn’t to make room for ARod I’m fine with this seemingly backwards move…

darkstar,
They are doing it because their "premier hitting SS" is in danger of becoming a "premium paid guy consistently going on DL stints do to bad knees". Sure, he is much more valuable as a SS. But they figure it is more important to keep his bat in the lineup then risk losing him for an extended period of time with an injury.
I would love to trade Adam Everett to a team like Detroit if he can bring something decent in return. His weak bat can be more easily hidden in the AL then the NL and he is outstanding defensively. Plus he is reasonably priced.

yeah, realize they are worried about the injury possibility but he hasn’t seemed to of had any problems in the last couple years so I wonder if its jumping the gun a little bit.
But like I said, either way doesn’t bother me :)

I'm with Darkstar on this one. I don't understand the move one bit. Guillen's value drops dramatically moving over to first base. If they are that worried about him being injured why sign him to a new deal?
I would have pushed for them to go after a Casey replacement and take my chances with Guillen. Oh well.

“In other news, the Texas Rangers signed Andrew Jones to a new 5 year, 85 million dollar deal today. They cited plans to have the Defensive Wizard be their everyday DH as they attempt to ensure he can play the length of the contract...”
Doesn’t sit well does it BJ? Glad I’m not the only one who questions this move…

Redfan26: I think the Reds have to almost see how it plays out. They'll have Votto next season and Bruce for the following one, so planning around those guys is probably they're best move. For Dunn, they should try to trade him for good value only. The thing with the Reds is for a while now they've had too much emphasis on name value/recognition rather than quality. So cross your fingers.
