Leyland: No Barry For Tigers

Jim Leyland said it as plainly as he could:

Barry Bonds will not be a Detroit Tiger next year. End all speculation: He will not be a Detroit Tiger.

This isn't huge news - as I mentioned earlier, the Tigers are paying Gary Sheffield $14MM to DH next year.  They can't add another expensive fielding liability.  Now this Twins idea...very interesting.  I'm glad Minnesota hasn't ruled it out yet.

I guessed I missed it. What is the rift between Barry & Sheff everyone has been talking about?

I believe that would be about Sheff "throwing Barry under the bus" for previous steroid comments.

With the Mets implosion I really see them as a strong probability for Bonds. He's lightyears ahead of anyone else available with the bat and his D isnt as bad as the media likes to play-up. That’s 500ish OBP would look mighty sweet in the lineup…

An OF of Bonds/Beltran/Alou is probably what we will see with Milledge being a high amount of games 4th OFer. (And remember, Alou was a better than average Range guy in RF last year)

I just don’t buy the whole media “he just cant play in the NL so eliminate those teams” thing, as long as there is a solid CFer he is a strong possibility for the NL in my mind. Their teams match the “money + team in competition + need” guidelines much, much more…

I would love to hit against a Mets outfield of Bonds, Alou and Beltran. Anything not hit to center would be trouble.

How much would you like to pitch to a Mets lineup of Alou, Beltran, Bonds, Wright, Delgado, and Reyes.

Off the top of my head I can see Bonds in San Fran, Texas, or NY Mets. Sleeper is the Twins.

I liked Trevor Hoffman's (I think it was him) comment last week saying that he'll believe Barry is leaving the Giants when he retires or actually signs with another team.

BJ yeah that’s what the media always tells us, but like I mentioned Alou was an above average Range guy in SF last year and Bonds isn’t a slouch. Although he isn’t as fast as he once was, he still takes good routes to the ball and will generally catch everything he can get to ~ he’s a onetime great fielder with good instincts, people tend to forget that… Plus with the time off to Barry and Alou it would be Lastings/Beltran/Bonds or Alou just as much with a killer bat on the bench.

If the Mets upgrade the rotation it might not be that easy to hit balls to the OF anyway, and then the lineup addition is just frightening. It just seems like a really good fit for them right now…

I see NYM, SD, Min and longshots Tex (cant compete so…) Mil (if they open the pockets for the 1YR addition) and Cle (if they cant trade for Bay, Miggy or another big bat for 3B/LF) as the most likely to be serious contenders for him. LA might be at the top of my list, but I really cant see Bonds in LA at all after the 18 or so years of despising the guy (and despising might be an understatement…)

I've always felt Bonds' defense was overrated when he was in his prime. He was the best defensive left fielder in his prime but that's like being the tallest midget. And voters aren't required to give gold glove awards to left, center & right fielders, just three outfielders. His arm was accurate but never strong. If he had any king of arm he would have been the right fielder in Pitt instead of Bonilla because Bobby couldn't catch a cold. Also, if he was so brilliant defensively with great instincts in his prime why wasn't he installed in center when he went to the Giants? He had the speed for it.

No, no matter how many gold gloves he earned, mostly given to him for his bat, he was never what I would call a gold glove fielder.

Oh man, I was looking all over for that quote. All I could find was a reporter saying the Tigers didn't want him.

“His arm was accurate but never strong. If he had any king of arm he would have been the right fielder in Pitt instead of Bonilla because Bobby couldn't catch a cold.”

~~~ Bonilla was actually at 3B until 1990, and and even after that it was on-again-off-again. The obvious arm he had from playing that position made him the easy choice for RF. Bonilla really wasn’t a bad fielder at all when he was with the Rats either, he was generally about LgAvg RF with the plus arm…
“Also, if he was so brilliant defensively with great instincts in his prime why wasn't he installed in center when he went to the Giants? He had the speed for it.”
~~~ Giants had Darren Lewis in CF; it was early in Darren’s career and they thought he would develop into a semi-star and you don’t get much speedier than Lewis. Believe he was also the leadoff guy…

“No, no matter how many gold gloves he earned, mostly given to him for his bat, he was never what I would call a gold glove fielder”

~~~ The years Bonds won the GG he was always above LgAvg FP% and at least .30+ AvgRFg. Bonds has a career 1.82 RFg vs the average 1.48 in LF, and 2.24 RFg to 1.92 AVG in “OF” ~ which is a combination of all positions before 1996.
He also had like 10-15 Assists yearly up until about 1998.
