Astros Contact Schilling

Ed Wade saw Curt Schilling's list on 38pitches.com, and the Astros weren't on it.  He said he felt compelled to call Schilling yesterday anyway.

Schilling pitched for the Astros in '91 as a 24 year-old, but was traded to the Phillies for Jason Grimsley.  Yes, that Jason Grimsley.  Nice move, Bill Wood!

Does this mean teams outside of Schilling's dirty dozen are in play?  Who knows...someone offers $17MM, he would have to listen.

Maybe Ed Wade can sign Schilling, sign Clemens, sign David Wells for about 40 million dollars. Sounds genius to me.

Arod: Don't forget Glavine and a trade for Moyer! It's all about "veteran leadership" and "tutoring the younger players."

What are you two talking about? The Astros obviously lack a #2 SP and Schilling on a 1 yr deal would make a ton of sense for them. That said, I don't see it happening but why wouldn't the GM at least express interest. Of the free agent starters, Schilling on a 1 yr deal makes the most sense for the Astros.

Astros are a lot further away from competing than just adding another starter. Schilling would help but it won't be nearly enough to get them to the post season.

Yeah, unless Schilling learned how to play excellent 3B, SS, 2B, and catcher along with his pitching duties.

Did the Astros change divisions all of a sudden? This is the NL Central we are talking about here.

Yes, the Astros need more than a starter. But starting pitching is a huge hole for them. After Oswalt, they drop off drastically.

3B, SS, 2B and C? Wiggington isn't terrible. Everett may be the best defensive SS in the game. Burke hasn't ever been given a full shot (and he still may not get it...so this is a weak spot). Towles will be the starting catcher and he impressed after getting called up from spending most of 07 in AA.

the astros lacked starting pitching, and this move would definitely make sense. the astros really had a big gap after pettitte and clemens left...so to fill it with a competitor like schilling would really make sense. the astros have a good lineup..i think the main problem is just pitching...relief and starting.

Who's Ed Wade trying to fool? He isn't going to get Schilling. Ed's a propaganda man, and now all the Astros fans will be saying, "We're after Schilling." That's just what he wants them to believe. You have to be careful of Ed Wade, a top-notch elixir salesman.
