| Crede For Damon Declared Dead? »

Omar Minaya is considering many options in his hunt for a #1-2 starter. Ben Sheets and Johan Santana we've already discussed today. Who else is on the radar? Ken Davidoff has the latest.
- Many of the trade options you're already familiar with: Joe Blanton, Jon Garland, A.J. Burnett, Dontrelle Willis, Jose Contreras, and even Erik Bedard and Jake Peavy. This group varies in number of years under team control, health, and ability.
- Davidoff notes that Omar Minaya had dinner with the Indians' Mark Shapiro Tuesday night. It sounds like the Tribe isn't looking to move pitching, so Cliff Lee may be off the table.
- These guys are less than #1-2s, but the Mets have interest in Carlos Silva, Kyle Lohse, and Hiroki Kuroda as fallbacks. Adam Rubin has a Mets insider who says they aren't keen on Livan Hernandez. Steve Popper believes Jason Jennings may be considered, as he was a year ago when the Astros were shopping him.
- Interestingly the Mets checked in on Brad Lidge but wouldn't part with Carlos Gomez or Fernando Martinez for one year of him.
- Strangely Davidoff says the Red Sox are in the lead for Kuroda. There's already talk of a six-man rotation; how would the Sox accomodate one more starter? I haven't seen the Yankees connected to Kuroda at all. My guess is that they'll pass on him simply because Kei Igawa and Hideki Irabu didn't work out, rather than judge him on his own merits.

KW wishes you were a GM looking for a "frontline starter" if you're putting Contreras in that group.

"Red Sox are in the lead for Kuroda."
Thats very strange. Is this guy managed by Scott Boras? Sounds like the type of thing he like to float out there.
If that is for real, are the Sox trying create pitching depth so that they can trade one of the kids (lester or buccholz)?
Intriguing if true, but I really doubt the validity of that one.

Agreed. Who isn't after a "front line starter," and even more curious is "where do you even find one in thjis market?" Aside from the oft-mentioned Santana possibilities, no one is really of that quality. Sheets is maybe the best possibility out of the group mentioned, but he's damaged goods.

I think that as far as those trade options go, they should pursue Bedard. He could probably be had for the least and produce very, very well coming from the AL east. They are all going to take significant prospects and young players...but I think they would get the best value out of him for what they would have to trade.

The notion that Jake Peavy is available is ridiculous. The Padres have no motivation to move him. He is under control for 2 more seasons and the Padres believe they can be competitive this year. This would be valid speculation next offseason, but right now there is absolutely NO reason to trade one of the top 3 pitchers in baseball.

If the Sox are in on Kuroda, it most likely means one of Buccholz or Lester is being considered tradeable. I can see them trying to trade Lester for a 3B/1B replacement for Lowell, should he not be interested in Boston's 3 year offer. Lester could be the headliner in a Cabrera deal. Not sure I like dealing our young pitching.
Posted by: Papelboner | November 09, 2007 at 10:33 AM
Everybody has a price, including Peavy. I do agree though, that if you are going to get the Pads to move him they will have to be blown away by the package.
That list of front line starters was pretty silly.

it does sound like Theo's stockpiling assets for a big trade. The Globe threw out the idea of them making a run at Danny Haren.

I don't like dealing young pitching either. That said, I would certainly trade Lester and more for Cabrera if Lowell walks. To me, Lester will not become more than a #3 in the AL East. Let him pitch against pitchers and lousy catchers in the NL and he is a #2 with the potential for a few dominant seasons. He looked good against the Rockies in the World Series. I'm not sure how Lester is viewed around baseball.
Buccholz I would not trade for anyone accept Santana. I am usually quite critical of "prospects" but this kid is the real deal. Ace stuff, and he knows how to use it!
Posted by: Mr_Punch | November 09, 2007 at 11:01 AM
"except", not "accept." I hate when people do that.
Posted by: Mr_Punch | November 09, 2007 at 11:03 AM
I've seen half a dozen stories now that say the Sox are "very unlikely" to pursue Miguel Cabrera, even if they can't resign Lowell (presumably because the Marlins are asking for Arm/Leg and two more A prospects). There's talk of moving Youkilis to 3B and brining newly-acquired 1B Chris Carter up to the majors. He's the guy they got as the "PTBNL" for Pineiro:
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Chris%20Carter&pos=1B&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=452080
It does seem more and more like the Sox are seriously considering moving either Lester or Buchholz. There's lots of talk about packaging one of those guys with Crisp and one or two others to get either Dan Haren or J. Santana. Of course, if they moved Lester and got Haren or Santana, they still wouldn't need Kuroda...
Posted by: metafrantic | November 09, 2007 at 11:13 AM
Bedard is a beast. He's 28 and still a couple years away from free agency. There is no way the Orioles would trade him for cheap. But if they actually want to trade him, he's a better option than Santana. 1- he's cheaper, 2- he's got less mileage on his arm.
Posted by: John Peterson | November 09, 2007 at 11:21 AM
I really don't see the deal with Buchholz. I think Lester is going to be an ace for sure. I would be sooo happy if the Bluejays traded for him as i could definetly see him being a #2 guy leaving the jays were to trade Burnett if they were so inclined.
Hopefully Epstein goes crazy and trades Lester for Troy Glaus. Though they would have a sick rotation if they traded for Haren, whether or not they trade Lester in a package for him. Lester really seems like a Billy Beane type a guy.
Posted by: BaseBallz | November 09, 2007 at 11:37 AM
The Sox should only sign Kuroda if they plan on dividing the franchise in half and fielding two competitive teams.
Posted by: BrianTX | November 09, 2007 at 11:59 AM
haha...no way Epstein trades Lester for Glaus. :)
If you don't see the deal with Buccholz, you just haven't seen him pitch enough. He can bring heat, and has one of the best curveballs I have ever seen. He also doesnt walk many batters. This is where Lester gets into trouble. He allows way to many base runners. While I expect him to improve, I think it could always be an issue for him to a certain extent. Some guys have great careers pitching their way out of trouble, but I don't want to place my bets on a guy like that. I think a move to the NL would be really beneficial. It would potentially lower his pitch counts and runners on base.
I want to note how wrong I could be about Lester. My criticisms of him could have been applied to Erik Bedard just a few years ago. We can see how that turned out. I would love to keep Lester, but if the Red Sox are hypothetically going to trade one of these guys, I consider Buccholz a much safer bet to develop into an ace.

Even if they were planning on not resigning Lowell and trading Bucholtz for Cabrera, they wouldn't need Kuroda:
Beckett, Matsuzaka, Schilling, Lester, Wakefield?

Sox are not going into the season with two 40 yr olds and no starting pitching depth
with that said I do not think Buch will go..nor do I think they acquire miggy (although if its possible to do without giving up Clay I'd do it without thinking)
If anything..if any kind of big deal is going to happen it's going to be another pitcher.

The Mets wont acquire a frontline starter. They just dont have the players to do it. Hell, even if they want to acquire a number 4/3 guy in Blanton, it will cost them heavily in prospects. They arent going to gut the system for 1 guy. They will hold out for one more year until some big names will hit the open market and then make a deal.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 09, 2007 at 01:03 PM
Thats what everyone was saying they were doing with Zambrano and Johan...at some point, they need to take it into their own hands.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | November 09, 2007 at 01:05 PM
I just think that the Mets SP is good enougy that they can get by with what they have. Maybe add a Jennins or Clement or anybody who can be had for a short term deal and see what happens.
One thing that made me feel better was seeing that Omar was involved in Brad Lidge but wouldnt give up Gomez. That means that Gomez is not going to Oakland for Blanton, because atleast in my opinion, Lidge would have been the much bigger pickup, atleast for the Mets. I still am sticking to my theory that Heilman could give the Mets close to 200 innings of low 4 era ball, maybe better. He could do this for cheap, compared to what Blanton or Garland would cost in temrs of prospects. Then you bring back El Duque as the swing man, or give him the 5 spot and stick Pelfrey/Humber in the pen as a spot starter. It seems like the Mets have a serious goal of inserting some of their own guys into the lineup in the next few years, because if they wanted Milledge gone, theyve had a million chances to trade him. I think Omar really envisions Milledge and Gomez in the corners by 09, because he has been building waiting for those guys for the past couple of years, bringing in stop gap guys like Green and Alou. If the Mets do seriously pursue A-Rod, it does help to know that you have 2 corner outfielders that will be making close to the minimum next couple of years. If you trade those guys you probably have to go out and sign an expensive veteran replacement. Lots of people made jokes about how old the Mets were, but a lot of those old guys are just keeping spots warm til' some of the kids are ready. Omaar is very fond of the youngsters he brings in himself and I dont think will give them up unless it is for a bigtime upgrade at another position.

I wonder if Dayton Moore is shopping Gil Meche? His contract isn't looking AS ridiculous now. The market is so thin with pitching. Meche isn't the frontline guy the Mets seek, but he'd be a solid addition and they wouldn't have to part with their entire farm system.
Posted by: coryjwilson | November 09, 2007 at 04:58 PM
Whatever the Mets do they'll always suck. This team talks about winning a world series 20 years ago which was one by an error! Lokk what happened this year "amazing".

"brining newly-acquired 1B Chris Carter up to the majors."
Nope. He was in the DBack minor league system and we let him go for peanuts because he couldn't possibly play 1B and there's no DH in the NL. Ortiz would play better D at 1B than Carter.

"The Mets wont acquire a frontline starter. They just dont have the players to do it. Hell, even if they want to acquire a number 4/3 guy in Blanton, it will cost them heavily in prospects"
I think you're really underestimating some of the Mets' best prospects. Milledge still has potential, Fernando Martinez is raw and young but could be a stud in 2/3 years, Carlos Gomez is a very good outfield prospect, Deolis Guerra, Phil Humber, Mike Pelfrey and Joe Smith are all decent to very good pitching prospects. They may not have a Jay Bruce or a Clay Buchholz but they have a lot of very good prospects, easily enough to acquire a star. I think it'll end up being the trade everyone has been talking about since the start, Blanton to the Mets for Milledge and Aaron Heilman
Posted by: scribbletone | November 10, 2007 at 01:01 PM
Scribbletone, I know, but when you compare them too guys like the Yankees, Redsox, Angels, Dodgers and D backs, it isnt very impressive. If a team wants to be able to top the Mets offer, they probably can. I dont thik Santana/Bedard/Kazmir/Haren is really very realistic. I dont think Blanton is going to a met. The fan base will be furious if they trade Milledge for Blanton. They could have made this trade last year if they wanted. And it is funny you bring up Heilmans name, because I will say it again, he will put up better numbers as a starter then Joe Blanton, or atleast very comparable, for a fraction of the cost and you dont lose Milledge. I know Nando is supposed to be great but he had a bad season and is soo young he cant really be considered a top guy yet. Gomez is my pride and joy in the Mets system. That is the one guy I belive will become a superstar and shouldnt be traded anywhere. Guerra, same as Martinez, he is very talented, but very young and a couple of years away. I also dont consider Blanton even relatively close to a frontline starter. I have watched him pitch, and I know that people here get upset when I say this, but I was thouroughly unimpressed watching Blanton. He has a sharp curve... when it is on, and his fastball is BP. He doesnt strike a lot of guys out and gives up a ton of hits. I think he has been greatly helped by Oaklands home field, because it is so big. I think he is a decent number 4 guy, maybe a number 3 but his price is to high and he is a product of a bad division for hitting and a great pitchers park IMO. If the Mets trade Heilman and Milledge for this dude they would be creating a hole and not even really filling an important hole. Blanton probably becomes the 5 starter for the Mets, and we lose our setupman, when the last thing we need to be doing is losing our solid bullpen arms. I think within a year or 2 Pelfrey/Humber could easily be more valuable then blanton

Nrmax88, in terms of comparing the Mets' farm system to that of those teams you listed, obviously they fall short, they don't really have any bonafide studs or the depth. They aren't as good as any of those systems you listed and would most likely lose a bidding war over any player that was being persued by those teams. But they still have enough that they could make some moves if they were willing to pay for it. Also I don't think your giving Blanton enough credit as a starter, if he moved to the NL he would be a 3 starter. I just feel like there is no way Billy Beane would trade Blanton unless he got a real good offer, like the one I said. I also really don't think much of Milledge, and i guess i didnt consider how the Mets fan base felt about him as well
Posted by: scribbletone | November 10, 2007 at 03:58 PM
No Scribble, your right about what Beane would want and the Mets ability to get Blanton if they want, I just dont see it. The can bring back El Duque, and that would give them a bunch of pretty good number 3 guys in Maine, Perez, Pedro, and El Duque. That is okay with a nice pitchers park and a good offense. If they dealt Milledge for Blanton, they would be adding another guy similar to what they already have, a bunch of middle of the rotation guys. Not to mention they would have to go out and pay 10 mil to somebody to play RF because there is nobody in their system who can step in. I think they will only look to make a big splash if there is a top flight starter, like Santana or Bedard or somebody, but in that case I dont think they have the goods. That why I sign A-rod and make the offense as good as you can for this pitching staff full of high upside number 3 types.
I shouldnt say the fan base would be furious(if milledge is dealt for Blanton), because some probably wouldnt be, but more then a few would be very upset. Blanton is not a make or break type of guy to have on your roster. The mets arent going to create 2 more holes to fill a nonexistent hole (number 3 starter). Atleast I hope not.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 10, 2007 at 07:13 PM
hmm nrmax you make a good point that a Blanton trade would essentially have them sending out 5 3's and three of them have bad injury records. Maybe the Mets would be able to add Pelfrey or Guerra and maybe a lower level guy and get Beane to give them Haren. He is exactly the young ace kind of guy you're talking about and if the Mets could get the A's to do a deal like this I bet they would jump on it
Posted by: scribbletone | November 10, 2007 at 07:28 PM
I would loveeeeeeee Dan Haren. I have been hoping Omar would snag him since the deadline of 06 when all the Zito talks were everywhere. I think for a guy like Haren or another ace that is potentially available, the Mets will go hard for him. I just dont know if they have the parts. But as for more mid-rotation type guys, I just dont see him giving up a bunch of cheap years for Milledge for one when that would mean spending more money on an average outfielder.
