I really question whether anybody within that organization has a specific direction in which they're heading. I'm painting with broad strokes here, but really, are they competing, rebuilding, keeping the status quo? every off season
it's the same every off season, sign a couple of middling players, stand pat, and hope for another fourth third place finish.

every off season it's the same every, sign a couple of middling players, spend enough to say you spent money, for the most part stand pat, and hope for another fourth place finish. Well guess what Baltimore, Tampa Bay is coming for you sooner than you think

How doesn't AJ Burnett make sense for the Orioles?
Bedard and Burnett would make a excellent 1-2 lefty right punch for the O's, while Jeremy Guthrie can provide at least average production and Adam Loewen can show his star potential.
Maybe, just maybe, Daniel Cabrera can prove his value and show some consistency.
Throw (shudder) Steve Trachsel back into the picture and you've got a pretty formidable 5 man rotation with Trachsel as a backup

Trachsel has no business being on a major league baseball team.

agreed...Trachsel is so over the hill he can't even look back and see the top of it

The team President should just tell us if he is going to actually sign a big name free agent or not. Thats what we the fans want to know. If we are rebuilding we will make sure not to waste our time and money on Orioles tickets. Now if they actually try to get a power hitter or two, a solid RP and make efforts towards winning then sure we will show up. But lets not waste time. Bedard is a top 5 pitcher in baseball(when healthy). He won't want to stay if we aren't trying to win. Teixeira won't want to come to Baltimore to lose. Give me Andruw Jones in CF and Alex Rodriguez at SS/3B. Give me full seasons from Guthrie, Loewen and Bedard. And don't give me another Jay Payton.

Burnett or his wife is from Baltimore, as they sort of wanted him. They could use the pitching. Maybe Miguel Tejada for Burnett, could that work?

I realize the Blue Jays would probably have to throw in something else, maybe a bullpen arm.
Posted by: Guitar Hero | November 09, 2007 at 01:08 AM
i dont think the Jays would have to throw in anything. if the Orioles want Burnett and would give Tejada then thats it, no throw ins. Tejada can put up some good numbers, but hes been on the decline and hes not that good denfensively ..plus he could have to move from SS and the Jays allready have Glaus at 3B for 08 with an 09 player option and Thomas at DH for 08 with an 09 player option.

If the Oriols really want Kyle Farnsworth then I don't see why not the Yankees would make that trade. But it would be a concern if they also want Melky. The O's are definently not getting Burnett, Jay's arent trading him.

If I'm the yanks, I give them Farnsworth for any prospect. I don't care if the guys is 45 years old. That is a horrendous contract.

What about a Farnsworth and Marquez or Farnsworth and Horne deal for Tejada? Horne makes a lot of sense; he led his league in ERA in Double-A (i.e., a real minor league), but he's 24 and his value has probably peaked. And if the Yanks are serious about keeping the three young guys in the rotation, there's not really a slot for Horne (with Clippard probably ahead of him, too). Average prospect plus great-potential reliever plus salary relief might do it for Tejada.
If they want an outfield prospect, I'm happy to part with Brett Gardner, instead; Brett definitely has value for us as a fifth outfielder with great speed (think Michael Bourn), but he's not going to be a starter for us, whereas Tabata and Austin Jackson can both be significantly better than Melky.
Either way, Tejada to Yanks just makes too much sense to not seriously develop.

I know this might sound crazy but hear me out.
what about a lugo + crisp + cash to baltimore for tejada.
it solves the outfield problem for the orioles as well as gives them a shortstop. i think crisp could thrive in the non pressure environment of balitmore. lugo could possibly too. it would also bring a ton of speed to their lineup. if lugo lead off and roberts was right behind him, it could make them dangerous. maybe sign bonds to dh and you might have something there.
thoughts?
ps. this was my first ever post. be kind haha

Farnsworth and a prospect for Tejada? im close to Toronto and i still think i can hear the Orioles laughing at that offer. Farnsworth=great-potential reliever? are you serious? if Farnsworth had so much great potential then why would the Yankees want to dump him? and then talk about an average prospect(P or OF) along with Farnsworth? give your head a smack. Farnsworth has had back to back below average seasons, he doesnt have close to the value to be included in any trade for Tejada.
i think Tejada has slipped some over the past couple seasons, but hes still capable of putting up big numbers and its going to take more than average players to get him

I mentioned Farnsworth because the Orioles are interested in him and his track record shows a couple of great seasons. I'm aware that reliever lives are quite short, but look at what the Orioles did last season with their bullpen (spending a ton of money on middle relievers) and tell me that they're aware of it. If they're interested in him -- and that's been reported from multiple sources -- then he's got value in a trade for Tejada. As for Horne, he's not a bad prospect -- the Rangers wanted him for Gagne.
Is this a great package? No, of course not. I'd be happy to include Gardner (and hope the Orioles overrate speed), but I suspect that's not going to placate you. That's the thing, though: it's not about making an objectively fair offer, it's about making an objectively unfair offer that the other team will take. I look at the Orioles and see a team that overvalues middle relievers, doesn't project starting pitchers well, and thinks fourth outfielders can start (see: Jay Gibbons). So I'd offer Horne, Gardner, and Farnsworth and see what happens.

On the topic of the AL East basement, I agree with whoever said that the O's are falling and Tampa is rising. I would actually be quite surprised if TB finishes with a worse record in '08. If they can acquire just 2 relievers (say, decent middle men) they could win 75 games.

It would be nice to see the Orioles move Tejada's salary so they can adjust for the coming season and make a run at next year's free agent market. It's sad, though. Why should a team with their resources face a small market type rebuilding effort?
