« Cubs To Make Offer For Crawford? | Main | Odds and Ends: Clark, Izturis, Clemens »
The Phillies need a starting pitcher, maybe two. Problem is, they may only have $10MM left to spend. All of that money is expected to go to pitching, so Aaron Rowand should pack his bags.
Todd Zolecki says the Phils won't attempt to retain Kyle Lohse. Carlos Silva seems too pricey. Instead, Zolecki names Hiroki Kuroda, Kris Benson, Matt Clement, Livan Hernandez, Tom Glavine, Mark Prior, Shawn Chacon, and Joe Kennedy as possibilities.
Scott Lauber has heard from Ruben Amaro Jr. that the team will definitely consider Japanese options like Kuroda and reliever Masahide Kobayashi. Trading for pitching seems unlikely, as the Phils would probably have to part with Shane Victorino to get anyone decent.

luckily for the phillies, they already have a good team that can make it to the postseason. im sure its still not good to only have 10 million to spend however.

as a Royals fan, my idea for the Phillies would be a trade to us for Jorge De La Rosa, a left #4 starter..for Pat Burrell (eat half his contract). That frees up about an additional 5-7 million off his contract to add on the 10 million. Toss that at Carlos Silva as a #4 and JDLR goes to the #5 slot. Problem solved. 2 pitchers for Philly, we'd get a power bat in LF.

I guess this means one less suitor for Lowell...

and then the Phillies could trade Utley for Tony Pena? maybe Howard for Joey Gathright? any more suggestions?

Why do people keep listing Glavine as a possibility anywhere but Atlanta?
Posted by: FineHamAbounds | November 13, 2007 at 02:55 PM
Getting rid of Burrell would leave the outfield as Jayson Werth, Shane Victorino, and Chris Roberson.
I know pitching wins championships, but Chris Roberson doesn't help.

Other teams are still possible for Glavine, even if the chance of it is small.

whoops, sorry wrong post

I highly highly doubt that Glavine declined an option with the Mets to go pitch for the Phillies. The chance is microscopic, in my opinion. Now, if the Braves come in and make an insultingly low offer then I'd reconsider, but that shouldn't happen.

With Myers back in the rotation I don't think they need 2 more starter arms. It would be nice to add one and ship Eaton out to the soap factory. But they do have Kendrick, Moyer, Myers, Hamels. I'd think another middling FA bullpen guy like Riske would be on the menu

Hendry should bite the bullet and give Prior one more shot at $2.5 million. There was too much potential there to let him walk away without being sure that he is done. Unless he has medical info that we are not aware of.

Phillies don't really need Jorge de la Rosa. We already have a pitcher with an ERA above 5.80.
I love all the headscratching over Eaton, checking and re-checking his arm to see if he's injured. I guess it's hard for Gillick & Co. to accept the fact that they signed a really crappy pitcher.

I love Amaro's line: "We'll be aggressive, but that doesn't mean we'll sign anyone at 12:01 AM." And then saying they'll let the market settle. They're really priming up for an offseason for the ages.
Not. The Lidge trade set up a list of other things to do, and without that list getting taken care of the trade is a hell of a lot less enjoyable.

Wonder where this hack gets $10 million from. Out of the clear blue sky, he mentions $10 million without uttering a single word of the source.
The Phils owner has already been on the record as saying the Phillies will spend well beyond last season's payroll.
Posted by: xaseq | November 13, 2007 at 05:57 PM
They said at the beginning of the offseason that they had $23 million to spend.
Lidge will likely get $7 million in arbitration.
Romero got $4 million.
Ryan Howard will get a raise.
That will leave them with about $10 million.

Wouldn't $23MM to spend indicate that they were keeping payroll at the same level? Quick math says Garcia ($10MM), Lieber ($7.8MM), Rowand ($4.3MM) and Nunez ($1.9MM) equals $24MM coming off the books. If the comment literally was "we're spending $23MM beyond our current roster commitments," that pretty much sucks for Phillies fans.

You're not taking into account the raises players will receive and the structure of their contracts. The Phillies are notorious for backloading deals.
To the reader who posted that ridiculous Burrell comment, uh what? I often trade guys with an above 900 OPS for a fringe starter AND eat half of his contract.
I've been pushing the Phils signing Prior to a two year deal for a while now. He's been pitching hurt for 3 years, the problem is fixed; he's worth the gamble.

I think Cliff Floyd would make a whole lot of sense for the Phils in that 4th outfielder role, especially since Werth and Burrell can both struggle against hard throwing righties at times. He'd be some nice LH pop out there for about 300 ABs, and a solid PH option
