Torii Hunter Signs With Angels

Who saw this one coming?  Now only did he sign on Thanksgiving Day, but Torii Hunter signed with the Angels.  The news broke a little after midnight.  It's a five-year contract for $90MM.  That's a surprising $18MM annually for those poor in math.  No one even knew the two sides were talking!  Hunter just isn't an $18MM player to me.  I can see why he jumped on this.

The Halos now have six players for three outfield spots and one DH spot.  Hunter will always be in center, and Vlad will always be at DH or in right.  So then only two of Garret Anderson, Juan Rivera, Reggie Willits, and Gary Matthews Jr. will be in the lineup (unless someone goes to first base and knocks Casey Kotchman to the bench).

GM Tony Reagins says this doesn't affect his other dealings, so perhaps he's created these outfield and pitching surpluses to acquire Miguel Cabrera or Miguel Tejada.  Willits would be appealing to the Marlins, I imagine.

All I can say is wow. I guess Matthews moves to LF?

Didn't the Angels just sign an aging CF coming off a career year last year? This has to make Willits the odd man out, but what about Juan Rivera? The Angels now have Rivera, Anderson, Vlad, GMJ, and Torii for 3 OF spots and DH. Anderson's bloated deal and declining production make him almost impossible to move, unless they eat the whole contract. GMJ has no trade protection thru 2009. Vlad isn't going in anywhere. Rivera is the only one under 30 in the group, and he's probably gone or on the bench now.

This just doesn't make a lot of sense, but as an A's fan it doesn't bother me to see the Angels spending recklessly.

Happy Thanksgiving White Sox fans. If the Angels win the Miguel Cabrera sweepstake, they should be the favorit to win the AL pennant.

Does this seem like a signing partially to cover up for the mistake of Gary Matthews Jr.'s contract? With that roster, at best Matthews is going to platoon between OF and DH with Anderson. Maybe they're anticipating something nasty coming out about Matthews in the Mitchell Report.

As a White Sox fan, I cannot be happier that the Angels way overpaid for Hunter. Though I think he is a fabulous fielder and a decent hitter, he is not worth the money that has been thrown around and definitely not the money he has signed for. I hope, but of course it is a pipedream, that KW does something to improve this club. I do not see it happening; afterall, he just overpaid for a reliever waiting to be bad. Aaron, you still out there?

cachhubguy,
As much as I am a Red Sox fan, I regret to say, if the Angels acquire Cabrera, they will be the favorite. Hands down.
HOWEVER, I don't see them grabbing Cabrera. So I'm not at all concerned. I see the Dodgers grabbing him. If they don't, then the Giants will. But seeing how the Red Sox have signed Lowell and the Yankees are close to signing Arod, I don't see either of these teams grabbing him.
But anyways...
Hunter mow adds to the Angels strong outfield. He offers gold glove-caliber fielding and a steady bat. I'm still surprised that the Angels actrually signed him though...

The Angels are making some noise right now, and Tony Reagins is showing us how much of a stiff Bill Stoneman was. The other thing is, the Angels are overshadownig the Dodgers, who after finishing in fourth place last season, are still sitting on their hands. Since the McCourts bought the Dodgers, it seems like they have waited until all the decent free agents were off the market to make a move.
Artie Moreno knows he has to make changes if he wants get better. Getting a new GM who isn't scared to make moves, was a great start. Stealing thunder from the Dodgers is also a good move. Frank McCourt and Ned Colletti need to wake up and smell the coffee!

i have an uneasy feeling about this trade being a cubs fan . this smells like hendry . i pray one of the reasons he was in californa was not for making a trade for gary mathews jr .chone figgins is a guy i have been wanting the cubs to trade for the last two years and that won't happen unless the angels need to trim some of the money down for cabrera . the cubs now have three shortstops and are in the hunt for a switch hitter .

Everyone im surprised that you would be surprised about how we could get cabera, I mean after this deal we can get him we create alot of trade oppunitys right now and AND GMJ might have steriods problems he has to deal with so maybe this is tryin to get GMJ off the team so we dont worry about HGH

I cant believe Angels fans are griping about this. The Outfield situation will be resolved (they wont start opening day with 6/7 outfielders) and Vlad now has protection in that line-up.

thats exactly why i fear hendry would trade for sammy mathews jr .

The Cubs should trade for Juan Rivera to play rightfield. He is a pretty good hitter (he would hit 6th or 7th) and he can play capable defense i think. Probably wouldn't that take much to get him.

One thing about trading juan rivera in right is that he came of a season where he was out for most of the season with a broken leg..he came back slow but at the end was doing pretty well..but themfightnwords what would be your offer?

rivera is right handed and only hit a few homers . hendry is in love with speed, power and versitility . (aren't we all ) hendry would be looking at mathews and a left handed hitter for the infield . i can't see the angels trading both figgins and mathews unless the angels are stock piling on youngsters to land willis as well with cabrera .

I Love this signing GMJ didnt do very well and he made this angels debut under boos because of HGH controversey but unforutunly can we trade GMJ to anyone?

Cub Fan you could solve are problem with one deal, Willits and Juan Rivera and we got all or problems done with 1 extra of insted of 3

the only way i would consider a trade for mathews as a good trade is if figgins came with him and that would fill both of hendry's most important issues .

On thing rivera did was have a great year in 2006 he had caarer highs in every offensive catergory and he was are protection for vlady but he got hurt what can you do?

You Angels are stuck with GMJ until 2009...he has a no-trade clause in his contract...lmfao I still can't believe you overpayed for Hunter!!!

hendry was after gary mathews jr two years ago when he picked up pierre . hendry woulkd indeed trade for mathews because , 1 he played for the cubs before and so did his father , 2 he is a switch hitter , 3 hendry is an idiot .

willits sure , but he will be needed for the cabrera deal . YOU GUYS will end up with cabrera due to the fact that the angels have about every piece the marlins are wanting and are willing to part with them .

This will have interesting ramifications on the SP trade market. The A's will likely dismantle, meaning Blanton and Haren should be in the mix, but the Angels could now also pursue another ace with the talent they have. I have a feeling they'll still look for another bat, but they're certainly not eliminated from the discussion, which gives the selling teams more leverage.

Ok, first proposal off the top of my head:

Angels trade Juan Rivera and Bootcheck for Eric Patterson.

I am suprised people are trashing the Angels. They are primed to trade for Cabrera and have a good lineup/great rotation/good bullpen. If they trade for Cabrera, The Angels are a top 3 team in all of baseball (top 5 teams in baseball are in the AL anyway)

what else do you want a Rangers fan to do...love them??? LMAO

the cubs have no use for rivera . the cubs are loaded with right handed hitters ...soriano , theriot , derosa , lee , ramirez , soto , and murton . the cubs wouldn't need rivera because they could use murton at a cheaper price . trust me , hendry would be looking at mathews . the only trade i would be looking at would be with figgins . mathews and figgins for patterson , cedeno , marshall , and ohman since you guys need some lefties for your pen .

I wouldn't trash the Angels - I think they've got a hell of a team that just got better. At the moment they have an overabundance of high-priced OF, though, and too many SP as well. IF they spin that excess into prospects - or Miguel cabrera - then I'll be kind of scared of them, actually. If they got Cabrera they're definitely going to run roughshod over the AL in 2008. Of course, at that point their payroll is going to rival the Red Sox unless they unload Anderson or Matthews Jr.

$18 Million a year for Torii Hunter? Wowzers... Guess the Angels didn't feel right going through the offseason without massively overpaying for an outfielder.

Figgins to the Braves for prospects, some of those prospects, Wood, Willits, and Saunders to the Marlins for Cabrera?

I think its an OK signing if they trade some of their abundance of OF and pitching to get a bat like Cabrera.

Figgins to the Braves would be sweet.

I think the Angels are in a position to get Cabrera AND Willis.

now the angels are in perfect shape to trade prospects plus an outfielder who can play center to the marlins foe cabrera---- whos playing shortstop for the angels next year????

i think the angels will match up better with the twins to get santana or with the orioles to get tejada and bedard then they do with the marlins in getting cabrera and willis.

According to what I've read, Hunter will be the constant in CF, and Vlad, Anderson, and Matthews Jr. will share LF, RF, and DH, and get their ABs. There was no word on what happens to Rivera or Willits, so perhaps as some speculated above, they could be trading chips.

Given that Vlad has been known to be a bit poor in his routes to balls plus his bad back problems from before, maybe this is the first move towards making him a DH.

Matthews deal doesn't look so bad now. Until he started getting nicked up he was on pace for .275 and 20-25hr's. Plays a solid CF and makes some amazing catches.

A 4/40 deal isn't prohibitive in any sense for a club that needs a CF. The Cards are expecting to land prospects AND not pay any salary for Rolen. Tejada will land prospects plus the acquiring team will pay the entire salary. Both make more than GMJ and come with a lot of risk.

Matthews is still better than Juan Pierre by quite a bit. A team not willing to pay for Rowand/Jones can find a cheaper alternative in GMJ.

If anyone knocks Kotchman's 119 OPS+ and superb defense to the bench, that's just nuts. I honestly don't think any of those guys at this point are better than Kotchman. But, if the Angels really view him as such, I think the Yankees would gladly take his roster-filling person.

Here is my guess for the Angels going after M-Cab.

Nick Adenhart, Brandon Wood, Reggie Willits, Jeff Mathis for Miguel Cabrera.

Maybe Figgins goes into the deal as well to play 3B for the Marlins but then I wouldn't see Mathis in the deal.

Scratch that last deal.

Adenhart, Kendrick, Wood, Willits, Mathis for Cabrera.

Figgins will then be traded for some bullpen help.

Oh well, I thought Torii actually wanted to play with the White Sox, but I guess it really was all about the money with him.

Good luck, Angels fans.

Hey Barroid Bonds I have a litte problem with your deal the deal you made is way to much for just Miggy Cabrera and before they trade away jeff mathis they must find a back up veteren catcher. Also Barroid Bonds the Angels would only make that trade if the D-Train is in that deal. Figgins in the other hand is my favorite player in the team if he is traded their style of play will be gone cuz there wouldn't be anyone fast to steal bases cuz they don't have O.C, Willits, Figgins, and etc.
