Beane Has High Asking Price For Haren

Did you expect anything different?  Billy Beane is happy to field offers on Dan Haren and Joe Blanton, but he'll require a king's ransom for either pitcher.  Jayson Stark says Beane asked the Yankees for two of Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, and Ian Kennedy for Haren.  With the Red Sox it was two of Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester, and Jacoby Ellsbury.  The Mets would have to pony up Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez.  With two starters under contract through 2010, Beane and the A's are sitting pretty.

One source of Stark echoes the popular sentiment that Miguel Cabrera in an Angels uniform would prompt a full-on A's firesale.  That would include Huston Street, Dan Johnson, Mark Kotsay, and Rich Harden.  You have to admit, that would be fun.  Maybe the Brewers won't give up Rickie Weeks for Chad Cordero, but how about Street?

Dan Haren is good, but hes not worth trading Hughes and Kennedy, plus they want another prospect. If I'm the Yanks i bugde and give up Horne/ Jackson now cuz if you don't Beane will know you will be desperate for Haren. Then you will have to give up Hughes/Kennedy/Horne for Haren when you can probably get Santana now for Hughes/Cabrera and Jackson or Horne.

I understand the asking prices for Bedard and Haren, but one great year from each of them doesn't warrant their trade demands. They were great last year, but at least with Santana, you know he can do it all again.

not shocking by any means at all. he is under contract until 2010, that means atleast 2 years of basically free pitching. The price for Haren is pretty much just right, its just a matter of if it will be paid, the obvious answer is no, not at this point, but the winter meetings just started, give it some time see if they budge alittle bit at all. Ellsbury and Lester would be hard to part with, but with Haren you know what your getting and your getting it for pennies till the turn of the decade

@BaseballFanatic22

I've been saying that all along to all those Yankees fans who kept wanting to drop out of the Santana sweepstakes and chase after Haren instead.

The key word is "desperation". If the Yankees are out on Santana, they will have no other alternative in their pursuit of that elusive "ace". Bedard? The Orioles are reportedly asking for more than the Twins are asking for Santana. Willis? He's off the market, but would probably require the world as well. Ben Sheets? Again, desperation would play a big part in these negociations.

Billy Beane's no fool.

id wait to see if blanton or harden become available as well, those guys are on par with haren, and the price might be only one prospect

I understand the salary benefits that Haren provides versus Santana, but if Santana isn't worth a package of Hughes and Kennedy, how is Haren?

bedard has never thrown 200 innings and has always spent time on the DL. I shy away from breaking the entire bank and selling my whole farm system for him. Haren is another mystery, are his numbers a result of that ballpark and pitching in that division? I'f im the yanks, i pay the money for the sure thing in santana.

star prospect i ment

The Redsox do not have a need for a starting pitcher though, to the the extent that the yankees do at least, and certainly not to the extent of giving up lester and ellsbury.

Santana wins 2 Cy Youngs and is 29, has never been injured and has been dominant for 4 straight years. Bedard and Haren can hang basically one good year on their belts and they are worth more? I know Santana will cost a lot but, he is a true #1 who would win 20+ for the next 5 years or more for either Boston or NY. Salary matters, but when you already spend $180million, what is a little more?

This is pretty much what I was expecting from Beane. If you think about it, he holds a lot more of the cards with Haren than Smith does with Santana... He has the option of asking for more and risking no one accepts.

If they don't deal Santana now, he walks and they get nothing, as he will not waive his no trade during the season. Johan holds the cards there, really.

Haren has two years left on his contract. They don't have to deal him now; they could even deal him during this season or the next. They have tons of options. Beane can table a high asking price in hopes that a desperate team pays the price, and if no one bites... No harm, no foul. Another year of Haren.

If the Sox end up with Santana, I wouldn't put it past the Yanks to snap up Haren or Bedard.

When a strong division rival makes themselves even stronger - you have to do something.

If I were a Yankees fan, I wouldn't like it, of course. Gambling with that much young talent is kind of ridiculous.

I agree with you Lindsay. Shouldn't this "hard stance" taken by Billy Beane be driving up the price on Santana a bit though? Given that the next best option is Haren or Bedard, who are far from a sure thing compared to Santana (see jmoy's post above), and also won't come cheap, I would think that Hank and Theo wouldn't be haggling so much over prospects with the chance to lock up Santana at stake....they do have a much stronger negotiating position in the Santana sweepstakes though....given Santana's contract extension and his no-trade veto.

I understand the salary benefits that Haren provides versus Santana, but if Santana isn't worth a package of Hughes and Kennedy, how is Haren?
