Edmonds Would Waive No-Trade
Joe Strauss has a new article up at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, discussing John Mozeliak's pursuit of a starting pitcher as well as the availability of two veterans.
Nothing new on Scott Rolen, but Strauss did have an interesting tidbit on Jim Edmonds. Edmonds has a full no-trade clause, and his latest stance is that he'd waive it for a Southern California team only. Since the Dodgers and Angels don't need outfielders, the Padres are the one possibility. The Padres are interested if the Cards throw in some cash. Edmonds makes $8MM in '08 in the last year of his deal.
Also, Strauss contends that center field prospect Colby Rasmus is untouchable, while the Cards would be reluctant to include Chris Duncan in a deal.

This year is getting more and more interesting with our new GM Mozeliak. Building a young team, I didn't think I would see this for years to come. Edmonds for Chris Young sounds very interesting to me. Especially if the Cards throw cash at San Diego.
This along with the Rolen trade for Kevin Mench and Capuano.
Could the Cardinals also pursue Jack Wilson?
That would be an infield of Ryan, Izturis, Wilson and Pujols. With an outfield of Ankiel, Duncan, and Mench, with still a bunch on the bench depending if we would bring Rasmus up.
If all this did happen the cards would be in the running significantly more than whats expected to turn up next year.
Summary
IF: Izturis, Wilson, Pujols, Ryan.
Pitching: (In no specific order) Mulder, Carpenter, Capuano, Young, Wellemeyer, Wainwright, Pineiro.
OF: Duncan, Ankiel, Rasmus, Mench.

Oh I forgot to add, I dream for San Diego to give up Young for Edmonds and another prospect.
Posted by: melharts | December 02, 2007 at 10:08 AM
You can dream for Chris Young all you want, it's not going to happen. Kevin Towers isn't going to trade a guy that makes up their 1,2 punch with Jake Peavy.

i dont see KT throwing much of anything out there to get him.
I dont see his power numbers translating well at PETCO.
But if he can still cover up some ground maybe he'll try to acquire him at a cheap price

Kevin Towers isn't trading a top prospect for an aging outfielder that's past his prime.

@melharts
The only "Young" the Padres are going to send over for Edmonds is if "Eric Young" signs a minor league contracts with SD.

@melharts
Edmonds for Chris Young???!
That is one of the better ones I have seen on here.
The Padres are interested in taking Edmonds for essentially PART of his contract... that is about it. If it happened I am sure there would be a few low level prospects thrown in to save face.

I still have to wonder if we are seeing the ravages of steroids take their toll on Jim Edmonds. He's really hit the wall in terms of production and injury.
Posted by: coryjwilson | December 02, 2007 at 11:55 AM
The guy has been a crash dummy his whole career. All those amazing catches came at a price, plus that ankle injury he's been dealing with. I don't think he took steroids but you just don't know, I mean he was around some roiders in his career. But that concussion he had against the White Sox last year really sapped him, I think that was the final blow.

Ha! Jim Edmonds for Chris Young. Haven't heard a good one like that for awhile...
Posted by: moebarguy | December 02, 2007 at 12:36 PM
Edmonds for Young is much like all the stuff everyone rips on Cubs fans for. Nice work, you are evening the tables pretty quick with proposals like that!
Just kidding...probably not. I will say Edmonds is worth next to nothing, as he is far, far too fragile. If you look at his zone ratings, his defense has decreased dramatically. I think he was in the bottom five...the cards can't see Rasmus soon enough

try Edmonds and cash for Tim Stauffer
Posted by: AnteaterPadre | December 02, 2007 at 01:01 PM
oh hey if you want Chris Young from the Padres, try Duncan to start or maybe Albert Pujols
Posted by: AnteaterPadre | December 02, 2007 at 01:02 PM
melharts was joking, right?
Posted by: bjsguess | December 02, 2007 at 01:12 PM
Wow melharts, are you trying to give all Cardinal fans a bad name here? Jesus, there's no way we could get Young for Jimmy Edmonds. Stauffer is is more likely, or maybe Ledezma. Trading Jimmy makes no sense for the Cardinals at this point in time unless the other teams picks up his salary.Unless it's a complete salary dump, we're better off waiting til July and see if he improves his value by bouncing back some.

What about Edmonds to LAD for Loaiza? The Cards get their mediocre arm without doling out a big contract, and the Dodgers get their veteran outfielder without trading Matt Kemp. They could even trade Kemp for someone like Cabrera. Sure, Edmonds isn't exactly the middle of the order pop that Colletti is looking for anymore, but he wouldn't feel as bad benching Edmonds to allow Kemp or Ethier to play as he would Rowand, Jones, or another free agent. And the Cards might be looking for someone healthier than Loaiza, and maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like Loaiza can't be much worse than Lohse at a fraction of the cost.

Tony,
If the Dodgers picked up Edmonds contract in full I don't really have a problem with that offer. But wouldn't Lowe make more sense? I thought the Dodgers were interested in getting rid of Lowe's contract, so maybe one bad deal for another?

You know whats sad, is when I open myself for attacks, so you people can comment even after I stated "I Dream"... you people hop onto attacking as if your teenagers taking candy from a child, lol.
Maybe read before commenting on something that was stated hypothetically before taking it as fact, or commenting on how bad it was as a trade before you even commented.
Posted by: melharts | December 02, 2007 at 02:09 PM
melharts,
Making dumbass comments make you look like a dumbass. So don't critical of us for pointing out your stupidty
Posted by: ozziethesaint | December 02, 2007 at 02:12 PM
Dumbass Comments sure, pointing out stupidity, i'm all for that, getting critical on you pointing those out I don't have a problem with.
But when you bash on peoples dreams, or there wishes, or there hopes. Thats pathetic to take such things away from a person.
Did I know Chris Young for Edmonds is a dumb idea, sure. Did I mention to add a prospect, yup sure did. Do I realize that the cards would have to forth up a lot of cash to ever see something so outrageous, absoluetly.
Who mentioned Albert for Chris Young, that sounds a little more outrageous to me, nonetheless, sure you guys pointed out my dreams of which probably would never happen.
To get this topic out of bashing and back into the ACTUAL TOPIC AT HAND:
@ Tony, I'd have to agree with Ozzie on that statement, Lowe does make much more since.
@ Adun, Edmonds is mostly washed up now since he's so fragile, but he still has defensive capability in center, and his career stats makeup for a bad year, do I ever expect him to put up great numbers again, nope... but he'll be a 'decent' CF for any team.
@Green Grove completely agree with you Edmonds would probably not have great numbers at Petco, however his Defense would make up for his offensive, but he'll never be worth 10M ever again in his career, more like 4-6M, unless some miracle occurred.
Posted by: melharts | December 02, 2007 at 02:55 PM
melharts,
What I'm trying to tell you here is that his defense doesn't make up for a damn thing. He was rated horribly last year, well below average. That doesn't make up for anything.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 02, 2007 at 03:17 PM
Aduncaroo he was also the least healthy of his career. While I don't expect his offensive numbers to go back up much, I would expect his defense to be much better next season

So one of your dreams in life is for the Cardinals to trade Jim Edmonds for Chris Young? Thats pretty lame. How about get some real dreams.
And Edmonds is a mediocre CF now whose only values are that he might still be able to play a decent center field and he has good plate discipline. I would say trade him and cash to the Pads for Justin Germano.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 02, 2007 at 05:53 PM
Ozzie,
How is Derek Lowe a bad contract? He's 'only' making 9 mill a year, and still productive. I think Tony's proposal is a little more reasonable, a washed up/overpaid Loaiza for a washed up/overpaid Edmonds.
Posted by: Chillin | December 02, 2007 at 06:09 PM
Certainly not a SoCal team, but if he'd be amenable to it, Edmonds seems like an obnoxiously perfect option for the Braves. Here's hoping Wren at least makes a call.
Posted by: mdross01 | December 02, 2007 at 06:20 PM
Chillin,
I just remember hearing that LA was open to moving Lowe and would be happy to do it if they could get out from under the entire contract because they feel for his money, his production isn't that great. Plus LA has soo many young quality arms that could step in and give the same production at a fraction of the cost.
Posted by: ozziethesaint | December 02, 2007 at 06:46 PM
mdross,
I don't see the Braves and Cards matching up well. You don't really have a SP that could interest us outside of Hudson and I just can't see Wren being that stupid
Posted by: ozziethesaint | December 02, 2007 at 06:48 PM
Chris Young would be nice. It will never happen unless we open up the farm for a plowing. It is not going to happen. I would like to see us just ditch the whole sallary and go after an effective bat. I guess we will see. Can you imagine Rolen gone. Edmonds gone. A bunch of mediocre players as Cardinal starters. Although that is about what we have had to replace these two guys every year so I guess it won't matter much.
Posted by: B-DIDDLES | December 02, 2007 at 06:49 PM
with how cheap youngs contract is, i dont c him leaving, period. i would be angry with edmonds in center, even if we gave up a bag of baseballs and the cards paid of the rest of his deal. steriods and his balls to the wall play r hurting and r going to continue to hurt the tail end of his career. keep ur expensive trash out of SD!
