Mets Still Like Jon Lieber

The New York Daily News reiterated the Mets' interest in free agent starter Jon Lieber this morning.  Liebs turns 38 in April.  He's probably just as good as Livan Hernandez, but less durable.  The Mets' interest in Lieber was previously reported by Jayson Stark on December 5th

Other teams connected to Lieber - the Reds, Royals, Astros, and Rangers.

Peter Botte and Roger Rubin name Lieber as one of many free agent options for the Mets if they fail to trade for a frontline guy.  Kyle Lohse, Freddy Garcia, and Bartolo Colon are candidates.  Matthew Cerrone says the Mets have been watching Colon "quite closely as he pitches in the Dominican Winter League."

whichever of those players they end up with, I hope they only committ themselves to one year (maybe more with vesting options)- just because this years class of free agent pitchers is weak is no reason to be stuck with some overpaid bum for the next four years.

Exactly jakec...
Plus next year's pitching market is much stronger...saving some money would be wise...and also saving some roster room would be useful...

i think they'll sign Loshe and Colon.

They wont sign Lohse if it is going to take 4 years. Also, Duque is a better option then either of them IMO. I mean, we know he will go onto the DL at some point, but you dont need to sign a guy to 4 years to be the long man/spot starter. Pelfrey/ Humber/ Mulvey can do that for you. I agree positive/negative. Most of Met nation has been pulling their own hair out (because they are idiots), waiting for Omar to make a splash for the last 2 years. Its funny, the same guys who want to pretty much fill up like 4 buses full of our prospects and send them over to Minnesota are the same guys who wanted Zito and Schmidt for long term deals, the same guys who pretty much want every big name guy out there. If Santana becomes available to the Mets for something that Omar feels is reasonable, we all know he will pounce. But I say just wait it out, dont sign any body to more then a 2 year deal right now, and save your money for next year.

The mets also have some first round picks, and they have said they are most likely finished going by MLB's "slotting system" in the draft. I would like to hang onto those picks because nobody on the market now is worth a first rounder. The Mets havent made a big signing since Wagner, saving themselves money for next year when some big names could be there. They also most likely get rid of Pedro's, Delgado's, and other contracts. The Mets have kept their payroll pretty low compared to the Sox and Yankees the last couple years, which angers a lot of Mets fans, but they have to realize that when a player comes along in free agency that fits a need and can be a difference maker, Omar has set them up to be able to throw big dollars around by not signing guys just to fill holes, or throwing big money at guys they dont need. Example, Mark Texeira and Santana/Sabathia if they hit free agency. Fill big holes and are huge talent. It isnt out of the question for the Mets to have 2 out of those 3 on their roster come 2009.

Considering Livan Hernandez' only real attribute is that he IS durable, to say that Lieber is probably just as good but not as durable isn't saying much.

I was thinking exactly what Devlsh just wrote.

True, but you all have to admit that Livan would be a ton better in Shea then in Bank One, or Chase Field, or whatever the hell that beatiful stadium is called these days. Livan for one or 2 years would not be horrible at all. He will give you a 4.50 whip and 200 innings almost gaurunteed.

4.50 whip lol. I just dont have it today. I am making posts that dont make any sense, and a couple times I just typed like half of a sentence and then just stopped. Most fo you should be used to it by now :). TGIF!
