Scott Wuerz of the Belleville News-Democrat suggests that Cardinals pitcher Brad Thompson is a rumored target for the Pirates. He could be part of a larger package, where players such as Jack Wilson, Matt Morris, and/or Jason Bay could be involved.
Thompson turns 26 soon. The Cardinals tried him as a starter last year, and he posted a 4.66 ERA in that role. He was at 4.91 in relief, but for his career he's been better coming out of the pen. Thompson lost his groundball mojo a bit in '07, and as a result his HR rate rose dramatically.
At one point, the Cards and Bucs discussed a Wilson-for-Chris Duncan deal. About a month ago Dejan Kovacevic said he expected Wilson to stay put this winter. Morris was a Cardinals' target at various times in '07. There hasn't been much buzz about the Pirates trading Bay to St. Louis.

It will be great if the Cards can get Wilson, Morris and bay in the same deal. I hope it takes place. As a St. Louis fan, Bay can always go into between Puhols and Rolan as a protection that Pujols needs. Wilson can be the lead-off hitter and shortstop that Eckstien did for 3 years and Morris can be another option in the starting pitching staff.

How big of a St. Louis fan can you be and not know how to spell 2 of the teams most popular players' names? It's Pujols, not Puhols and Rolen, not Rolen! You have no clue of what you're talking about. They will never get those three in the same deal, and Wilson would never be a leadoff hitter!

Are you serious?
First, learn to spell "Puhols", "Rolan", and "Eckstien". Second, viewing Wilson and his .312 career OBP as a leadoff hitter would be disastrous. The Cards already have enough low OBP middle infielders, including a solid young defensive RHB SS in Brendan Ryan.
Bay is intriguing, but I don't think the Cards have what it takes to get him, nor does he improve the team that much. He'd have to return to his 2005 form to be a better option than the bevy of league-average OF the Cards currently employ.
Morris would just be another mediocre pitcher on a staff full of mediocrity.
None of these three makes any sense for the Cards, as they already have similar players all over their roster.
Besides, who'd want to trade WonderBrad? Anyone who thinks that deserves to be kicked. Like a puppy.

Love Matty Mo, but he's done. The last thing we need is another aging pitcher with 5+ era. I would love to have Jason Bay, but Jack Wilson? Why? He's the same player as Izturis.

You are sadly mistaken.
Wilson last year: .296/.350/.440 with 12HR.
Izturis BEST year: .288/.330/.381 with 4HR... Izturis has never hit over .258/.302/.315 since that year.
Wilson is slightly less defensively than Izturis, but clearly Wilson is a better hitter.
Matt Morris's best years were with the Cards, they could either be attributed to Dave Duncan or youth, or both. A reunion with Duncan might help MattyMo in the years to come if a trade was ever made. As for mediocrity, he's still average, if he had years when he was with the Cards, he'd be above average but far from "Great".

I stand corrected on the Wilson / Izturis comparison. I wrote it without researching it. I didn't realize Wilson had that good of a year.
Matt Morris wouild be a decent #4 or #5, but not on a team filled with 4's and 5's
