UPDATE, 1-4-08 at 2:48pm: Towers has been signed; Troy Renck has the contract details. There's a mutual option for '09 for $3MM.
FROM 1-3-08 at 10:07pm:
According to MLB.com's Thomas Harding, the Rockies are close to a deal with pitcher Josh Towers, who turns 31 in February. It would be a one-year deal for $1.8MM plus incentives. Those incentives would start at 35 games pitched, so basically he won't earn them if he's exclusively a starter.
Harding adds that Towers would get $400K for earning a 40-man roster spot or the $1.8MM for getting on the 25-man. He'd take on a swingman role (which is odd, because Kip Wells seems to have been signed for that purpose).
I like Towers' chances to be worth a hell of a lot more than $1.8MM as a National League starter, but not so much in Coors Field. Drunk Jays Fans recently weighed in on Towers' tenure with Toronto, with their usual dose of cursing and hilarity.

Yay he's gone! I'm excited to see what he can do in the NL. Though that park is conducive to homeruns, so we'll see...

Strange signing you would think colorado has enough pitchers like this Redmond,Wells, now towers kind of seems like over kill. That's about 5million in payroll for guys that probably won't do much. Towers would have been much better in San Diego or san francisco. Colorado needs to be saving money right now to resign holliday, atkins etc not retreads.

I think this is an excellent signing, even at Coors. While he may get hit hard occasionally, I think the change of scenery, combined with facing a pitcher will help. Lets keep in mind, that Rogers Centre has played more favorably to Home Runs then Coors has in 2 of the last 3 years and the one year Coors did lead, Rogers was immediately behind.

I'd much rather have Towers, Redman, and Wells for $5 M, hoping one of them pans out, than Carlos Silva for $48 M!

Sorry about that. I guess I just hate the Silva signing enough to mention it twice!

Trust me. The Rockies have improved their situation with this one if only for the reason that he might take some innings away from Redman. You do NOT want Redman to pitch.

FineHamAbounds - wait...so it wasn't Redman's ingrown toenail?

Smoltz's Beard:
My bad. I stand corrected. He's an ace without that toenail. :)

It's been said for a long time that Towers was out of his element in the AL. In '06 he was historically bad (2-10, 8.42, 1.77 WHIP, 2.47 HR/9), and in '07 better, but still not very good. Not capable of being anything more than a mop-up guy in this division. But I've always maintained he'd make a decent back of the rotation guy in the NL. Great command, and, well... not much else.
If he succeeds it will be very telling about the imbalance between the leagues.

Sorry but the rockies seemed okay with FRancis, cook, hirsh, bucholtz, jimenez, morales they don't need starters these guys need time to develop they might fall backa little this year but 09 they would shmob on that division.

FineHamAbounds - the fact that I held out hope that he would pitch better after the toenail was removed proves how much of a sucker I am. Redman was such a dagger for the Braves, but I still felt sorry for him for some reason. When they said that he was pitching by himself in his basement before the Braves signed him...that mental image is just really pathetic.

Smoltz's Beard: I know! I wanted him to be good so badly, but even watching his pitching motion left serious doubts. The guy has some horrible mechanics. He gave up a lot of home runs at sea level, and I'd hate to see him in Colorado.

It's funny, every game but 1 that he pitched in for the Braves they lost. Every game last year that he pitched in for the Rockies, they won.
With the Braves...19.8 IP and 28 ERs
With the Rockies...19.2 IP and 7 ERs
Go figure.

Knowing Towers, he might have a temper tantrum if he do not get his way in the dugout.
