Manny Looking For Four More Years In Boston

Tony Massarotti writes today that slugger Manny Ramirez wants to play in Boston for four more years. Ramirez told reporters “I’m going to get the two options and I’m going to get two more years.”

The guaranteed portion of Manny's contract is up at the end of the 2008 season. The club owns the rights to exercise options on both the 2009 and 2010 seasons at 20MM per.

This statement may come as a surprise to the Red Sox brass, however. When Ramirez was asked if he and the club have discussed any of this, he responded, “They don’t need to. I know I’m going to get it.”

hah Manny. I'm not so sure he's going to get an extension and hopefully they won't make that decision before they have to.

Hehehe, so he feels he will certainly have his options at 20M picked up for his age 37 & 38 seasons, and that the Sox will certainly keep him for his 39 and 40 YO seasons as well? And he knows this despite the team saying nothing on the subject? hummm…

Manny, I love ya man, but…

Go Manny! I don't think he's *wrong*, but maybe he shouldn't go saying stuff like that without official confirmation...

Manny being Manny. What else could you possibly say?

Are they adding another DH in the AL? Because I do not see Manny playing OF much longer.

lol, Manny.

Manny retire a Red Sox??
Maybe not. Here are the issues.
1. Current ownership inherited Manny and his contract, and they dont like it--they have placed him on waivers and tried to trade him numerous times.
2. He is starting to miss games 59 over the last 2 years.
3. There are younger free agents for LF in 09.
examples 2007 stats
Manny .296/20/88 age 37
Dunn .264/40/106 age 29
Burrell .256/30/97 age 32
Crawford .315/11/80 age 27
4.Manny's health will eventually send him to the bench and be a DH that is a problem when you have Big Papi who at 32 is halthier and an off year for him was .332/35/117.

ryno23 - There is no way the Rays allow Crawford to become a free agent.

TB has options for Crawford for 2009 and 2010.

No way Rays would let Crawford walk??? Have you seen the payroll??? Last year the Rays spent $24 million -- they are a cheap team do honestly think they are going to pay Crawford (he will get at least 15 million basedon what lesser caliber players (Drew,Pierre, and Matthews jr) have received.

They have options for him. Total(!) the options are for $12.25 mil. He is a cheap player for them and for what he does. If TB wanted to trade him they would get a lot. But he won't make it to free agency until at least 2011.

I see the total options for Crawford as being close to $20M between '09 and '10.

Regardless, even an idiot GM would pick up the option and trade Crawford for a HUGE bounty of prospects if TB thought they couldn't afford the 2 years.

But Boston's not going to pick up Manny's option unless he unleashes a career year...that 20 HRs and sub .900 OPS is easily replaceable. mlbcontracts doesn't list any buyouts, so if that's true, I think Manny can forget either option being picked up.....

This is Manny saying that he expects to have 2 big years. In which case, I expect the options to be picked up.

As far as Crawford, his '09 option is $8.25mm and if that is picked up it triggers a 2010 option which is $10mm, but can, and probably will, escalate to $11.5mm based on performance. Rays would be crazy not top pick up the options and at least trade him if nothing else.

As for Manny, this is typical Manny; one minute he wants to be traded, the next he's looking for 4 more years. I do agree that the Red Sox will pick up, at least, his '09 option. He had an off year last year, but he had some nagging injuries, plus you don't exactly have to go back very far to for a big Manny year, his '06 OPS was 1.058. If he lands somewhere between his '06 and '07 seasons and post an OPS in the .900s, his 1 year $20mm option with another no buy-out option for 2010 looks like a great deal. Remember, Torii Hunter got $18mm a year for FIVE years.

Let's hope Manny never decides to be an agent after his playing days are over.

He has been reading that book "the Secret" which explains why he "knows" it will get picked up.

is anyone surprised when stupid people say stupid things? now if my dog starts talking, well we better call a press conference. manny is a moron and he is quickly becoming an old moron.
