Cubs, Sox Still Like Crisp

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes that the Cubs and White Sox "have shown the most consistent interest" in center fielder Coco Crisp.  Nothing appears imminent, as the teams haven't found any kind of match on players.  Cafardo says the Cubs have found the asking price prohibitive.  A week ago, Peter Gammons suggested Sean Gallagher and/or Matt Murton could be in the mix.

The Cubs are currently using Felix Pie and Reed Johnson in center; the White Sox used Alexei Ramirez on Opening Day.  As the season progresses we could see the Sox try Nick Swisher, Brian Anderson, and Jerry Owens.

Crisp himself named the Cubs, White Sox, A's, and Padres as clubs he's heard rumored for his services.

Now where are the Brian Roberts rumors?

The Cubs need to do SOMETHING. ANYTHING. These two first games have been horrible.

Get Crisp. Call back MacPhail. Give him what he wants for Roberts unless it's a major part of our current MLB roster. Do it before the season is lost.

I hate to whine about the umpires, but did anyone see today's game? It's hard to hit a ball when the blind HP umpire is calling strikes on the Cubs that are a foot outside. Look at their hit chart: 95% of their hits were to right field, and most of their outs were to right field, especially towards the end of the game.

Does anyone monitor these guys? Some of them are too old and are blind as a bat.

Ok, calm down, it has been two games.

And some explain to me why Crisp would solve our 'problems'?

"...why Crisp would solve our 'problems'..."

I don't know that there's an answer to that -- from either a Cubs or Sox standpoint.

Yeah I saw the game and I noticed they weren't giving Kevin Hart the same outside corner. Then while Soriano was batting with two on they were giving Torres calls way off the plate. Even Brenly said they weren't just giving Torres the outside corner but the other batter's box as well.
Yeah I'm NOT Koo Koo for Coco Crisp either

Cubs lost today from making they're own mistakes though. Not hitting cut off men and throwing the ball when they shouldn't have set up about 4 or 5 of the extra Brewer runs

Unless what the Red Sox want comes way down, I cant see anyway they will move him. He's just not that big of a upgrade over Jerry Owens or Felix Pie to trade anything signifcent for him.

what would the A's give for coco. NOT DENORFIA

fernando hernandez and either ryan sweeney or jerry blevins would be my guess

Yeah you have to admit that the calls were definately beneficial to Milwaukee today.

But the fact is that the Cubs don't need Coco Crisp. He offers great defense and a mediocre bat with good speed. Guess what Felix Pie offers? How about great defense, a mediocre bat, and.. good speed. The differences between the two are almost negligible, outside of their salaries.

If the Cubs really want to make a difference with their team, then they need to go out get one of three things: Brian Roberts, a legit middle of the rotation starter to take either Marquis' or Dempster's spot in the rotation, or a nearly impossible to acquire elite shortstop.

I know its only two games, and my statement really isn't based off of those games, but if this team is a couple games down in mid-May, then I think that Hendry has to fork up a legitimate offer for Roberts, something like Gallagher, Veal, Colvin and Cedeno. This team is too potentially good to waste because of a decent top prospect like Colvin.

pie is young, if you throw him right in the majors you may stunt his growth and waste his potential, on the job training is not really a good thing unless your in a jam or the player is fully able to not have a strong beginning to his career without letting it get to him. the sox took care of this problem with bucholz and the colon signing, the cubs should do the same for pie, he can be a really good center someday

I have to think Pie would see a lot more pitches to hit if he was hitting 7th in front of Soto. Hitting him 8th was where he looked the worst last season...someone better with stats than me should post his 2 hole vs 8th averages.

"pie is young, if you throw him right in the majors you may stunt his growth and waste his potential"

Pie has already been in the majors in both 2006 and 2007. At this point there really isn't much more growth he can do in the minors, considering he raked to the tune of like a .360 BA last time he was there.

At this point if you want him to grow and reach his potential, then you do the exact opposite of what you're suggesting. You leave him in center and let him take his lumps. You let him get everyday at bats and learn how to play and prepare against MLB pitching.

If the Cubs add Crisp, then that'll stunt his growth and waste his potential.

"then I think that Hendry has to fork up a legitimate offer for Roberts, something like Gallagher, Veal, Colvin and Cedeno. "

LMAO!!! Your kidding me right? It was this kind of offer in the first place that made this deal go nowhere fast. That is not gonna get you Roberts. Its only been 2 games, but if the cubs are struggling at the leadoff spot by mid-May, you can rest assured that MacPhail is gonna ask for everything but the kitchen sink, and why shouldnt he? Someone else on the 25-man ( and uh no they are not going to take Marquis) in addition to Cedeno will have to be in that deal, take it to the bank. The cubs also better hope that another team doesnt get involved and a bidding war takes place. If that happens, who knows how long it could be before a deal takes place. Again let me reiterate, its only been 2 games.

pies first mlb game was in 2007, he played none in 06. just because he had a good year in triple a, doesnt mean he is ready, hes only 23.

"LMAO!!! Your kidding me right? It was this kind of offer in the first place that made this deal go nowhere fast."

Uhh Tyler Colvin was assuredly never included in an offer. Gallagher, Veal and Colvin have all been top 100 prospects at some point, with Gallagher and Colvin being top 100's this year and Veal last year. Cedeno still has potential to be a solid starter and is a decent stopgap. To laugh at such an offer makes you look like a dumbass. If MacPhail is dumb enough to turn down an offer with three legit quality prospects and a solid stopgap replacement, then he's as big a moron as you are.

"you can rest assured that MacPhail is gonna ask for everything but the kitchen sink, and why shouldnt he?"
"The cubs also better hope that another team doesnt get involved and a bidding war takes place.

Because the Cubs will be offering FAR more than anyone else. What makes you think that any other team will want him as much as the Cubs? I've gone over this probably a hundred times, but there are NO teams that are legitimate suitors for Roberts. No teams have big holes at second. The Rockies or Mariners could get into it, but I'd find it hard to believe they'd offer more than Gallagher, Veal, Colvin and Cedeno. That'd be a massive haul for a player of Roberts' caliber. You can say, oh well what if there is an injury, but all of the contenders have guys at second that are locked in there long term, and will be in no position to offer up a bunch of quality prospects for a stopgap. Really at this point MacPhail doesn't have as much leverage as you think.

If he keeps Roberts, then the Orioles continue to suck huge balls, and Roberts continues to be mildly pissed off because nobody likes to lose. The Orioles get zero benefits from holding onto him. Holding onto him gives them 67 wins instead of 64 wins. In fact you should want to move him so your team sucks more and you get a better draft pick to build for the future. You'd be delusional to think that the Orioles can contend soon.

"pies first mlb game was in 2007, he played none in 06. just because he had a good year in triple a, doesnt mean he is ready, hes only 23."

If he's ready to play great defense, which he is, and be at least mediocre with the bat, which he is, then the difference between Crisp and him is, as I said before, negligible. At this point I feel like if they end up getting Crisp, then they might as well move Pie in a deal for someone like Rich Harden and just go all out for this year.

Pie has nothing left to prove in the minors. He is just as good right now as Crisp. Trading for him would make no sense at all.

And yes, the worst thing you could do to Pie is keep bringing him up and sending him down...let the kid play.

By the way, for anyone judging a team's season on two games...come on. You might as well go by their spring training records...

Honestly I don't like the match up for any of those teams trading for Crisp.
1. The Cubs already have a CF in Pie that provides the exact same thing, good defense and good speed, low BA.
2. The Padres are a team that makes some sense from the standpoint that their outfield is huge and his defensive range would be a plus, but he can't hit and the Padres biggest problem is run production, we have a bunch of ground ball pitchers (Chris Young being the exception) thus outfield defense is going to be sacrificed to get better hitters.
3. How doesn Crisp help a rebuilding team in the A's? I could see them trading for him and the flipping him, but what kind of market is there for a CF with above average defense but can't hit. They would have the same problem as the Red Sox are having now.
4. The White Sox need guys that can get on base for the big power hitters, not more of the low OBS type of players.

Honestly, what does Crisp bring to any of these teams that they cant live without?

As for the Cubs early season woes, don't get all carried away, they are still a good team. The only worry I would have is your pen is not looking like the strength it was thought to be, but your line-up will awaken. Let time tell, but I doubt it will be your line-up losing you games, as much as it will be your pitching staff unable to stop the opponents from soring.

Yeah, I bet the Cubs are interested in Coco Crisp... I bet they're also interested in just about every other CF who isn't Felix Pie... Why wouldn't they trade him again? Ryan Theriot and Mark De Rosa aren't exactly the most threatening middle-infield I've ever seen either... Ryan Dumpster is the number 3 starter now? No wonder the boo birds were out on opening day.

Cubs fans should be ashamed... giving Wood an ovation and then booing minutes later... pathetic. I also love how Soriano is booed after a K until he crosses paths with Lee and then it seems like a coordinated switch back to cheers. Is this what Cubs fans do instead of the wave now, choreographed booing?

Nah, you almost have to stick with Pie completely now ~ or trade him to an organization who can go through the growing pains a bit easier.

Interestingly though, Lou might be a tad upset about the Roberts situation ~ Soriano is seemingly being moved back to leadoff after all of 2 days. If he is upset about his LO possibilities, interest in Roberts or Coco could be fueled a bit by him… (and I know Coco isnt much of a leadoff hitter since he got to Boston, but...)

On the other hand, the BoSox though are probably learning they will be better off with Coco than without. Drew has played all of 1 game, Ellsbury isnt starting off very hot and Manny is, well, Manny. What would be their options with him gone when Drew or Manny take their normal days off/DL trips, or when Ellsbury needs to sit a couple to get out of a slump? I cant see them being too enthusiastic about moving a guy who seems to be kinda important to the team…

I still don't get why the Braves are not interested in Crisp. Crisp could match Kotsay's production with the bat and would a huge upgrade defensively. Schaefer is still raw and will not be ready until next year at the earliest and Gorky is behind him. Unless the plan is to put Lillibridge at 2b and Kelly Johnson in center I don't understand why they are not mentioned. That kind of shift would put two players at positions that they have hardly played.

Pie is as good as Crisp, has a much higher upside and costs less. Crisp is a BACKUP CF...if he was so great he would be starting. So, folks are freaking out over 2 games? Or are y'all just pissed that MLB hasn't crowned my Cubbies yet?

The Cubs will get crowned if they go out and improve their back-end starters.

As is, they're like the Indians last year...without the amazing table-setter that is Sizemore.

The fact is they look like they are still in AZ. Season started, boys.

That being said, Crisp is not the answer. You have to let Pie play. I don't like Pie in the 8th hole anymore than I like Soriano in the 2 hole.

Also, Mr. Questions is right on. Cheering Wood coming out then booing minutes later is so childish and beyond lame. It's opening day! Not just Wood, but cheering then booing every player every play. Nice homefield advantage.

They are cheering the player, booing the permformance. Who cares? he sucked...his performance was worth booing. Even if I wouldn't have, I have no problem with them booing a crap performance. If you don't want to be booed, pitch like a major leaguer.

I really dont think the cubs should use Johnson in CF, i think they finally need to give Pie the shot he deserves. He should be given at least a half season non platooned. CoCo Crisp's situation would happen all over again, he would slump then a youngin would come in and over take him then NO one would want him.

The notion that the pale hose need Coco is absurd. With Jerry Owens (now injured), Brian Anderson and Alexi playing well, I can't think of a good reason to acquire him, other than to needlessly blow payroll that is.
Nick Cafardo clearly didn't feel like submitting an actual rumor. Is his "major league source familiar with both teams" a receptionist?
