« Pedro Injury May Lead To Acquisition | Main | Odds and Ends: Alfonzo, Hill, Kline, Reitsma »
Matt Palmer and John Keim of the Washington Examiner write that the Nationals and Tigers discussed Chad Cordero this spring. Their source believes the Tigers' interest will heighten if their bullpen struggles early on. The article doesn't cover suggest it, but the Tigers could also consider relievers Jon Rauch or Luis Ayala. A look at the three:

While this makes sense, what does DET have to give?

While Cordero is younger, I would prefer the Tigers to try to get Rauch. He is cheaper than Chad, and he is fully healthy.

People think that the Tigers' farm system is depleted. This is a misconception. Detroit still has many great prospects.

I agree with max, I don't see a match. What the nats need is young starting pitching, the very thing the Tigers don't have to spare. I can't see Bowden having any interest in Inge or any of the position players in the Tigers system. If a deal is made Bowden will get too much (probably for a damaged player, just ask Wayne Krivsky)since that is his modus operandi.

Rob,could you list these "many great prospects" that the Tigers have in their system?

"Rob,could you list these "many great prospects" that the Tigers have in their system?"
Jeff Larish
Scott Sizemore
Michael Hollimon
Clete Thomas
Brandon Hamilton
Rick Porcello
Virgil Vasquez
Yorman Bazardo
James Skelton
While Bazardo is currently on the Tigers roster, I included him. Obviously the Tigers farm system isn't as good as it used to be, but there is still good talent.

"Detroit still has many great prospects."
People who study prospects for a living don't believe this at all...

Perhaps Rob M. meant they have "a few prospects worth examining in a trade to a rebuilding team for a middle reliever." I'd buy that.

Again, WHO would DET send for Rausch/Cordero? I don't know anything about those C-level prospects that they have, so who do you think Bowden would want? 2 AA starters? If he took Tyler Clippard I suppose something could be worked out.

Ok, maybe I exaggerated when I said that "Detroit still has many great prospects." They do still have some good young talent left. One guy that I think can swing a deal is Yorman Bazardo. He is only 22, and is probably better suited for a starter's role than in the bullpen.

I have a feeling Huston Street will be closing games for an AL Central team in August...

Jon Rauch would be a great signing for the Tigers.
I don't belive the Nationals would trade him though since he's signed longer and can do the same job as Cordero. Though it would be exciting for the Tigers to get him.
I thought Bazardo was a huge injury risk, which is why the Tigers got him on the cheap.
Im sure Bowden would trade Cordero for quantity which is all the Tigers seem to have, with the exception of Porcello.

First off, of the three relievers mentioned - Rauch is the least likely to be traded. The Nats look at him as Cordero's replacement for when The Chief is traded.
Of the three, Ayala may be the most likely to be traded to the Tigers. He's older, but he's proven he's healthy again, and he's always been a successful reliever when healthy. Bowden would not get full value for Cordero at the moment, courtesy of the sore shoulder and declining numbers lately.
In terms of what the Nats would need in return for one of these guys...believe it or not, we need middle infield prospects way more than we need young starting pitchers. Most of you probably aren't too familiar with the Nats' system, but we actually have better pitchers at AAA than we have in the starting lineup (this was the result of some players being out of options or management's loyalty to certain players). For example, we have Mock, Balester, Lannan, Shell, O'Connor, and yes, Clippard too (who could be decent if he could fix his mechanics).
So the question is: does Detroit have a good, young, promising SS or 2B or two to trade for one of our bullpen guys?
Posted by: bignatsfan | April 02, 2008 at 12:50 PM
bazardo and more for rausch would make sense. bazardo is the only tiger prospect besides porcello anybody would want and porcello wont be traded. the nationals could use a guy like bazardo because their rotation stinks. a good bullpen is worthless if u dont have the lead very often.

If i was to shoot out a proposal,
I'd say the Nationals try to get SS Cale Lorg, Scott Sizemore and maybe Dallas Trahern,
in exchange for,
Cordero and haha Ray King
Posted by: BaseBallz | April 02, 2008 at 02:52 PM
What is considered "full value" for Cordero? One major league ready prospect? more? less? He's a celebrity on the Nats, but a setup guy for a better team. None of the Nats pitching prospects projects to more than AAAA or 4-5 starter on sub-.500 teams.

Do the tigers have enough low ceiling outfield prospects to trade with Jim Bowden?
Posted by: DocBot | April 02, 2008 at 03:01 PM
"I think baseballz's trade prosposal is pretty close to what'd be asked of the Tigers.
I think that Bowden would almost definately ask for Cale Iorg, along with Sizemore and probably Yorman Bazardo. That'd be a pretty decent offer for Cordero, likely enough to get it done.
"None of the Nats pitching prospects projects to more than AAAA or 4-5 starter on sub-.500 teams."
So Ross Detwiler, Collin Balester, Josh Smoker, Jordan Zimmerman, and Jack McGeary all project to be 4-5 starters?
That is simply wrong.

"None of the Nats pitching prospects projects to more than AAAA or 4-5 starter on sub-.500 teams."
That has to be the most uninformed statement I have heard on these boards.

Tigers should try and acquire Cordero, he's undervalued because of the injuries. Clearly Mr. I isn't concerned in regards to salary. I wouldn't mind Huston Street either, but as for an early season trade Cordero seems to be a more likely prospect.
Posted by: detbaseball | April 02, 2008 at 08:07 PM
I guess I'm not sure why the Tigers would want to add another injured late innings reliever when they already have two of their own. Maybe Cordero isn't hurt that badly...I'm not really up on his status at this moment. But, with Rodney and Zumaya already ailing, it would seem that health would be of primary concern.

Mssr's scribbletone and Iron Nat, since you seem so eager to take my comments out of context, please reread BigNatsFans's post above. He didn't mention any of the legit high ceiling prospects Detwiler, Smoker, etc, (I don't think Balester should be lumped in with them), only the middling AAAA types I was referring to.
