Phils Not Ready To Talk Extension With Hamels

Phillies GM Pat Gillick isn't talking about a contract extension with ace pitcher Cole Hamels at present.  It seems that he first wants to see more healthy work from Hamels; Gillick expects to talk to him "at some point."  Things could change, as this is Gillick's last season as the team's GM.

Hamels called the Phillies' $500K renewal a "low blow" back in March.  Jayson Stark noted in April that Hamels' agent, John Boggs, isn't one to hand out club options for free agent years.

Hamels won't be arbitration-eligible until the 2010 season.  Scott Kazmir may have raised the bar for the three arb years of a young ace.  Typically those three years were going for $13.75MM, but Kazmir will earn almost $18MM.

If I were Gillick, I would at least sit down with Hamels and his agent and discuss what kind of a deal Hamels is looking for. Im not saying Gillick has to sign him right away, but at least just find out where the kid is at. Hes definately the ace of the future for the Phils, so I think Gillick will get down to business soon enough and at least negotiate the young ace.

I'll have to use my very vivid imagination to comprehend half a million dollars as a low blow. Way to be in touch with your fan base, Cole.

In spring training they have meetings with the players about gambling and chewing tobacco, I guess they also need to have meetings about the pre-arbitration portion of their major league careers being the ONLY time the team can control cost. Barring the small chance of a career ending injury he will certainly more than make up for this perceived low blow in the years to come.

As a Philly fan, I just don't get the vibe that Hamels wants to spend his whole career here. I'm not basing this on on-field performance or effort at all, which there are no questions about thus far.

He just seems like a real flaky, Cali-type guy who can't wait to get back out West and get some savage fish tacos. Another world out there

"Barring the small chance of a career ending injury"

Career ending, career altering, anything on the side or in between. Hamels is especially sensitive, I'm sure, because he's had a history of arm injuries. Given that a team can basically burn a player in their pre-free agency years if they want to (2007 Sabathia, Cubs arms, etc, etc), I don't blame a pitcher for wanting some security up front.

Yeah, why would Gillick want to lock up his young ace on a team-friendly contract and buy out a free agency year or two like every other team is doing these days?

Seems stupid to me that he hasn't even opened discussions.

Its likely not Gillick's call. He's said he's stepping down at the end of this season.

Well, Papelboner, it also seemed stupid to you that any team would be interested in Bonds. In fact, I believe you were "appauld" if I remember correctly. That was another topic that you jumped into with your opinions of unresearched bias. I could understand why some people would want Hamels locked up, I could also understand why a team would want to see atleast one full season without an injury. Hamels has had a laundry list of injuries, some of them weird ones, but he is a risk and locking up a guy who is an injury risk to a long term deal in a great hitters park without seeing that he can be durable might also be deemed "stupid". It isn't as obvious as some think.

nrmax has a good point. Just a glance at Hamels's wikipedia page shows a ton of injuries. During the Braves/Phillies game last night, the broadcasters said the reason Hamels fell to the Phillies was because he had a broken arm the year he was drafted.

I seem to remember hearing that Hamels got into a bar fight in the minors, and that Jamie Moyer has been a positive influence on him. Which, IMHO, is something that Hamels dearly needed.
