Jayson Stark touches on a few rumors circling around the Tampa Bay Rays...
- The Rays and the Phillies both made multiplayer offers to the Indians for Casey Blake, but neither was willing to offer a top prospect and a second prospect close to the big leagues.
- With Blake and Xavier Nady both traded, the Rays are leaning towards eventually filling their need for a right-handed outfielder with Rocco Baldelli who played in the outfield this week on a rehab assignment. It was his first outfield action since May of '07 and will play 5 more innings today.
- After discussing Mark Teixeira, the Rays have decided to pass, not wanting to move Carlos Pena to DH.
- While the Rays would still like to acquire a relief pitcher, they feel the price is too high for Brian Fuentes and they have little interest in Huston Street. Stark notes that last year's top pick, David Price, could be called up to provide insurance for the bullpen.

Melky's still in the game.

Cashman is not going to deal Melky, they didnt deal him for Johan or Sabathia, why would they deal him for washed-up burn? Also, he is Cano's best friend, Melky wont be dealt when Cano is on a hot streak. I dont think Melky is going to be traded. I have a feeling that, since the trade is a salary dump, its going to be Washed-up and Vidro for Igawa, and since there is no AAAA, they will have to send Vidro to Scranton.

What makes you think it's a salary dump? Everything I've read in recent days has suggested that the M's won't just dump salary.

Like I said in another post, the Rays are too timid to pull the trigger on a deal, although I can't blame them for not getting Fuentes since the Rockies think he's a left-handed K-Rod...Jason Bay makes sense for the Rays since he's signed for next season and his contract isn't too high...That said, they'll probably end up with a Dave Weathers type in the pen and Dave Roberts for OF depth.

yanks26ngoin-
I'm stating the obvious if you bothered to follow the link. Here's what it says in the link:
No official word on who is coming to Seattle in exchange for Washburn, but it sounds like it’s an outfielder. If the M’s got either Melky Cabrera or Brett Gardner, do back flips.
I'm pretty sure Cano has more friends than Melky. And I'm also pretty sure Cashman would put said friendship at a pretty low priority to get the pieces he wants/needs.

Buster Olney, Ken Rosenthal and Heyman seem to think its a salary dump. The M's really want to deal Vidro and Washed-up burn, thats why its a salary dump.

rays will stand pat and learn a valuable lesson that these deadline moves are a necessity to get the team rolling for the second half. That price for Blake is not worth it and the Pirates yanks trade should have been canned as collusion because the yanks got Nady and Marte practically for free. Tabata is going to be a nobody.

It has been stated numerous times though, Gardner and Melky arent going to be traded to Seattle. Cash money knows better. Its a salary dump for the Mariners, so the Yankees arent going to give up some guys that can be good. And they will only deal Igawa

luis -
What about Bay and John Grabow for some package including guys like Neimman,Davis, and Brignac? What would you propose ... or would you even be interested at this point?

Melky has a long way to go before he's good.

"Melky has a long way to go before he's good."
Agreed, but he has talent. You don't deal talent in a salary dump trade.
Either the Mariners want to dump salary, or they don't. If the do, the Yankees will make a deal. If not, they won't.

The Yankees aren't going to deal Melky anytime soon. Mabey in a few years, mabey not.
He's only 23 and still has a lot of upside. Why is everyone saying he is a horrible player. Who are you going to put it if he's gone, Brett Gardner? Melky can turn out to be a really good hitter some day.
If the Yankees make a move for Washburn, they will give up as little as possible.

For the love of God, I'm not advocating for trading Melky straight-up for Washburn, or denying he has talent. All I did was state the obvious, both here and my previous post.

"Rays have little interest in Huston Street"
Of course they have little interest in Huston Street. Billy Beane's history shows that he will not trade a major leaguer to an American League team during the season. Plus Tampa Bay saying they are not interested in Street only lowers his demand on the trade market. Meaning that is Street is moved the A's would receive less in return.

No offense Chicago thats a decent deal but I think we need to keep Bay. Grabow I could care less I still think we wind up with Marte next year after the Yankees get rid of him for the draft picks. Grabow, Osoria, Jack Wilson all need to be traded not Bay though.

BUCSOX, i agree. with mcclouth and bay shoring up the OF, why f with that? that's a solid outfield. just because the pirates stink doesn't mean they should give up all their best players. the rays are my favorite AL team, and i'd like to see them land Bay, but it makes no sense for the pirates to trade him. how are they ever going to get good if they don't hold onto to guys like him? their farm system has a few bright spots. they could be pretty f'n good by 2010 or so.
