Manny Ramirez Rumors: Thursday
3:26pm: Many people are emailing saying Jon Heyman is reporting Manny to the Dodgers.
3:08pm: Aaaaaand...it's dead again.
3:02pm: Rosenthal stirs things up: the three-headed Manny-Bay-Hermida deal is back on.
2:46pm: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says the three-way is dead, while the Dodgers are in play. Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe says to count out the Dodgers on Manny. Guess these guys aren't cube-mates.
1:31pm: Heyman says the Dodgers are back in the mix for Manny but the Marlins aren't out of it.
1:17pm: Nick Cafardo doesn't buy the "dead" talk. However, the Pirates may have turned away from the Boston-Florida scenario for Bay. The Rays are still a possibility for him.
12:56pm: Rosenthal's hearing this thing is dead.
11:49am: Rosenthal has a mixed opinion, with one source advising caution and another saying the deal is "taking off." Manny is following the ordeal on ESPN.

11:46am: Peter Gammons says the three-way Manny deal is close to dead. It may not make sense for Boston.
11:34am: A deal hasn't been reached, though Manny has consented to a Florida trade. Jon Heyman considers this a major hurdle cleared.
The Rays appear unlikely to make a trade, by the way. Perhaps they're cursed by their own loaded farm system.
11:29am: Will Carroll has an update. The Pirates could back out Bay talks entirely if they don't get what they want. The Red Sox will continue shopping Manny regardless, with the Dodgers and a mystery team in the mix. The Dodgers might be willing to part with Matt Kemp.
10:44am: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe agrees - the Pirates' return for Bay may be the holdup.
10:12am: Rosenthal says the three teams have a framework for the major players, but no agreement on the prospects. The Bucs' return from the Red Sox is the holdup. Rosenthal says Tucker and Stanton will stay put, by the way.
9:37am: Kovacevic says the Pirates are open to trading Bay to the Red Sox or the Rays.
9:22am: ESPN's Jayson Stark's source has this at 50-50. The Pirates are insisting on Stanton but the Marlins don't want to give him up. Grabow coud end up in Florida rather than Boston. Tucker is in play but not a lock to be moved.
9:10am: Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald has a source saying chances of a deal are "less than 50-50." Some members of Red Sox front office are not convinced Manny should be traded. What do you think? Are they better off with Bay and Grabow or Manny?
7:59am: Scott Miller of CBSSports.com hears that Ryan Tucker and Mike Stanton would not be in the deal. He says it's not done and talks could still collapse. By the way, the Pirates have tried to acquire Jeremy Hermida in the past.
7:17am: Here's the latest on the Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay-Jeremy Hermida three-way deal talks. At this time, the AP is saying there is no tentative agreement between the Red Sox, Pirates, and Marlins.

I think the redsox need to trade manny he has caused way to much drama and I'm sick of it.
Pay most of his contract and send him to dodgers for kemp!!!

The only wind we caught of Griffey JR being shopped was when we got the announcement "White Sox have Acquired Griffey Jr".
So obviously, the sports writers miss a lot. And they're missing something here, because Manny Ramirez won't be walking out onto the field at Fenway tomorrow night

Writers only know what's leaked to them by team personnel.
A trade like Pudge and Farnsworth wasn't leaked (I'm guessing the Griffey deal was similar) because it was Tigers' GM calling up Yankees' GM, offering a deal, OK, let's do it.
This deal has a lot more leaks because all three sides are trying to get leverage. More gamesmanship = more leaks.

If Boston is serious about trading Manny they can look to improve long term or accumulate prospects for an offseason acquisition. Jason Bay is not the only replacement out there.

Biggest fallout from this trade is it consumed so much of the Sox front office time that they failed to pick up a reliever, SS or young catcher.
They needed those pieces, they didn't "need" a LF, it was a "want."
Manny to the Dodgers for Kemp/Jones with Sox kicking in cash would have been a great move for the Sox; as they could have sent Crisp elsewhere for a RP then too.
Hope somehting gets worked out because having to waive Manny and get nothing for him would be a shame.

How hard is it to pick out one or two block prospects.
Like come on
Pirates- Jeremy Hermeda and two prospects
Red Sox- Jason Bay and John Grabow
Marlins- Manny Ramirez and a prospect
I say if you have a blocked prospect then trade him. All three teams are being dumb right now. Red Sox can get rid of Ramirez ans stop his running of the mouth and replace him with Jason Bay and a lefty John Grabow. Pirates can get a good outfielder to replace Bay in Jeremy Hermeda. Marlins can get a great hitter in Manny and could switch Josh Willingham back to catcher like he was coming up with the Marlins. Then all problems will be solved and they will go on with their lives.

Either way the third team will get screwed in this trade. Who actually gives up a good player (Bay/Kemp) for an average Jeremy Hermida and a prospect?

Obviously as a Sox fan I'd really only be satisfied with Kemp.
Ethier is a nice player, not the kind of guy you plug into LF in a pennant race for Boston though.

If the Red Sox - Marlins - Pirates deal is dead then why not just substitute the Reds?
Marlins get Manny
Reds get Josh Willingham and a Prospect
Red Sox get Adam Dunn
With Manny going to the Marlins, Willingham has no place to play. Plus, I think Willingham and Dan Uggla are both eligible for Salary Arbitration after the season. Since the Marlins will probably be more interested in giving big bucks to Uggla than Willingham, why not trade him now? So, the Reds could replace 80 to 90% of Dunn's RBI's for 1/3 the price.
The Red Sox get a power hitting Left Fielder to replace Manny. After the season, they could either decide to sign Dunn to a long term contract or let him go for Draft Picks and use the money to sign Pat Burrell or Mark Texiera.

No way they take on Jones unless they get Kemp in the deal. With that said, if the Dodgers trade Kemp for Manny they are friggan crazy.

I like Ethier but he essentially is JD Drew, so if it was him the Sox better get another prospect too, LaRoche possibly. Kemp would be essentially straight up. I know the Sox have also expressed interest in Broxton in the past too.

Andruw is lost as a player, and the Dodgers would have to add talent to any deal just to get him out of town. Under that scenario, they might have to add Kemp to the Manny deal just to get the Sox to take Jones' contract. Of course, if Boston pays Manny's money this season, and the team is willing to talk to Manny about the four-year deal he wants, the Sox should add a prospect if necessary (Moss?) to get Kemp.

Looks like the Marlins and Pirates took turns being greedy and ended up screwing themselves. Take 2 seconds to forget the media circus and think about it logically. The only team that does not lose much by this trade not happening is the Red Sox. If you really think Manny is going to purposefully kill his free agent value I find that humorous.

IF anything, kemp for bay would be the trade. But Dodgers still dont need bay if it costs up kemp.
I dont know if people actually know how good kemp is, and has been lately.
17 game hitting streak, .295 average, .352 obp, .466 slugg (all numbers going up), 26 stolen bases, 7 caught stealing, 12 homeruns, 58-60 rbis.
It may not be the same as bay or manny this year, but with his amazing speed for being so big and powerful, there is no way we should trade him for anything.

If the Sox can't get Kemp (who I think is a potential star, especially in RH-friendly Fenway), the season could implode if Manny sticks around. Look how they're playing now?
And to the guy who scoffed at Manny doing anything to lessen huis free agent value? Well, obviously, you're not a Sox fan who's followed Manny's career. He'll sit against tough RH pitching to keep his average high, continue to loaf to first on ground balls and pop-ups and he'll shut out the media the rest of the season, leaving his teammates to talk for him. Believe me, I love the guy and the two titles are definitely a result of the Manny-Papi lineup, but the Sox need to move on.

The Marlins are great at lpayer evaluation and development, but they're ownership is a bunch of thieves. Check this out:
ESPN's Peter Gammons reports that the Marlins wanted an extra $2 million from the Red Sox above and beyond what Manny Ramirez was owed in order to complete a deal.
That's an especially absurd thought given that the Marlins are likely to take in more on revenue sharing alone this year than they're spending on payroll. If Ramirez is traded now, it might be to the Dodgers.

A high level Rays official denied that a deal for Jason Bay with the Pirates was done.
One lone MLB.com beat reporter is still the only one saying that a deal is done, while many others are saying talks are still ongoing. According to the previous report, Bay is on the way to Tampa Bay for Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann. For what it's worth, Peter Gammons keeps saying that Rays people still think Bay will go to Boston in a Manny Ramirez deal.

I think MLB lets teams finish a deal if they're already in talks but I'm not sure for how long.

once the deadline passes, i believe the waiver rule comes into effect, if im not wrong, unless the deal was agreed to in principal before 4pm

I'm pretty sure (but not 100%) that the deal has to be agreed upon and signed off by the Commissioner before the 4pm deadline. Sometimes it can take a little while for the deal to be announced. It's also possible that the deal has to be agreed to by 4pm and then the Commissioner has some time to approve it after 4, which could result in a delay. But I'm pretty positive that teams can't keep working on trades after the 4pm deadline.
Anyone know for sure?
