« Mets Cool On Street, Nady? | Main | Uribe-Cora Trade Not Happening »
7:53pm: We have a quote tonight from Cordero's agent, Larry Reynolds:
"The timing of discussing non-tendering Chad Cordero is surprising, particularly at this time of the year, but that is the Nationals prerogative. We expect Chad to be fully recovered and if the Nationals decide to non tender him come December we will react accordingly. Chad's a proven closer, he is working hard to get back on the mound and I am not concerned regardless of what the Nationals decide to do."
10:56am: Odd timing for this. Nationals GM Jim Bowden said last night he plans to non-tender former closer Chad Cordero after the season.
Non-tendering Cordero is a no-brainer for the Nationals. He's earning $6.2MM this year, so the least they could pay him in '09 is $4.96MM if they go through the arbitration process. Cordero had labrum surgery on July 8th.
Bowden expressed desire to bring Cordero back on a low base salary with incentives instead. He may have already destroyed his goodwill with Cordero, as the pitcher was shocked and upset by the early announcement.

Is there a certain percentage of the previous year's salary that the player has to get as a minimum if they go to arbitration? For some reason, i thought a player had to get a raise from the previous year's salary in arbitration.

Man has this guy fallen off the cliff.
Ahh remember those good old days of 2005..
47 saves in 54 chances, 1.82 ERA, .97 WHIP, 61/17 K/BB in 74 innings. At age 23.
Yeah he used to be pretty good.

If he is non-tendered, I have a feeling Omar Minaya would sign him. He drafted him and likes to re-acquire guys he had with the Expos.

This was definitly a no-brainer for the Nationals. My question would be who are the suitors. Off the top if my head I can think of the Brewers, Orioles (But only if Sherrill is traded), The Padres (just for insurance), and the Cardinals. The only problem is he won't be a free agent until the end of the year. Some teams may have found a solution by then.

@rebuilding
Huh? He just had shoulder surgery & is out for the year. Won't be ready until spring training at the earliest.

The maximum cut is 20%.

Wow this makes the Rauch deal look that much worse. Unless he re-signs for a lot less of course.
No idea why Cordero would be upset. Its not like he didn't know this was coming. And at least he knows well ahead of time.
Typekey signed me out after 10 seconds ... annoying.

Bowden - to only think what he could have netted for Cordero back in the day. Instead of a huge haul they end up with nothing. Brilliant.

Does anyone remember the best package that was out there for Cordero in the winters of 05/06? I seem to remember a pretty decent offer from the BoSox if I'm not mistaken.

Back in those days the Nationals were asking for and almost landing either Lastings Milledge or Mike Pelfrey from the Mets. Because he was under contract for so long the Mets were actually considering moving one of these players even at the height of their prospect status.
The Red Sox were willing to move Michael Bowden or Craig Hansen for him back then, but the Nationals continued to push for Clay Buchholz, who was considered to be only a slightly better prospect back then.

trust me. dude sucks.

I will disregard the completely oblivious statement made above this post and begin by saying that Omar Minaya will probably try and sign him in the offseason if he is non-tendered
As someone said before, the Mets had high interest in him before. Billy Wagner's age is getting to him and the Mets are looking for a future closer. Cordero is worth the risk.

Jim Bowden's such a hack.

Agreed for sure. Omar has always liked him, and we have heard his name linked with the Mets in trade rumors for ever. Omar would definitely give him a shot, having nothing to lose. And if he proves healthy, why not?
