« Brewers Working On Durham Deal? | Main | Angels Balk At Price For Holliday »
According to MLB.com's Spencer Fordin, the Orioles acquired shortstop Juan Castro from the Rockies today for minor leaguer Mike McCoy. Castro played 18 games for Colorado's Triple A club.
Fordin spoke to Andy MacPhail, and the implication is that the Orioles' midseason hunt for a shortstop may have come to an end with Castro. Castro is understandably happy, as there aren't too many places where he'd have a shot at a starting gig. I'm sure MacPhail will continue hunting for a long-term option at short, even if it carries into the offseason.

Is there any possibility that the Red Sox and Orioles find a way to match up on a trade?
The Sox are rumored to be interested in George Sherrill. The O's need a shortstop.
Would Julio Lugo, a prospect, and cash considerations (i.e. the Sox pickup part of Lugo's remaining $18 million) be enough for the O's to deal Sherrill within the division?

Julio Lugo has negative trade value, regardless of the Orioles' sad state of affairs at shortstop. I would imagine MacPhail wanting Lowrie + pitching for Sherrill, but who knows if he's willing to trade in-division. From most of the rumors floating around, MacPhail wants two young MLB-ready players for Sherrill.

I fully realize Lugo has zero value. It was purely a speculatory idea on my part.

Haven't seen much on the Red Sox being interested in Sherrill, do you have a link?

Never mind, I think you might be referring to Olney's blog today. He said the Sox would "probably love to land Sherrill," but I wouldn't take that as actual interest.

That is exactly what I was thinking of Tim. I realize it was probably speculation on Olney's part and thus, further speculation on mine. I wasn't trying to say this was an actual rumor I had seen someplace. Sorry for the confusion.

Juan Castro should be over joyed that a team thinks enough of him to let him keep playing even at the minor league level.
The Orioles might as well give Ripken the job, he probably has just as much range now as Castro does and will definately have a better stick.
I dont' think Lugo would get Sherrill though, perhaps Bradford...he's still with the Orioles right

Lugo wouldn't get a bag of baseballs signed by Bradford. He was signed to a ridiculous contract and he's one of the worst starting shortstops in the majors. What part of that makes him attractive to any team?

Renteria got moved after his terrible season in Boston, Lugo + 8 million bucks(what I think was sent with Renteria) has to be doable. That landed a top 10 prospect in baseball.
I have never disliked a player on a team I root for more in my life than Julio Lugo. Just awful.

In rambling notes about the Sox interest in a lefty reliever(who doesn't have interest) Sherrill has been listed multiple times. It's never been an actual attempt, just speculation.

The difference between Renteria's case and Lugo's are huge. Renteria is a career .290/.348/.404 hitter. Lugo's career numbers are .271/.335/.391 and his trends are all downhill. Not to mention Renteria was 3 years younger at the time. The analogy just doesn't work.

Shhhhhhhhhh, don't ruin this for me. He's tradeable.
