« Odds and Ends: Phillips, Chacon, Hewitt, Griffey | Main | New Mariners GM Could Be Selected By Gillick »

Rays In On Fuentes

On Monday, Tim talked about the Brian Fuentes situation, naming a few known suitors: the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, and A's. Today, Tracy Ringolsby adds another to the list, the Tampa Bay Rays. The team's current closer, Troy Percival, has missed some time with injury this year, and the Rays would like to add some insurance for late inning situations.

This would give them a viable eighth inning option to pair with Percival when healthy, especially with Al Reyes missing time with elbow tendinitis. If Percival continues to suffer from his hamstring injury, Fuentes could easily slide into the closer role. Though Grant Balfour didn't do a shabby job with that last night and Dan Wheeler is solid.

If they're so inclined, though, they certainly have the prospects to do it.

I certainly understand the concern with Percivals injury. What about price as a joba chamberlain type call up out of the bullpen? it seems he is ready to step in and Pitch. Throwing close to 100 is very jobaesque. Very similar to wainwright in St. Louis, seems he could be a good fit for a young rays team.

Sorry if this was already discussed somewhere else, but what happened to the chat yesterday??

If they think the Percival injury is serios, they could go get Fuentes. But Percival will probably get back a little before the trade-deadline. So they'll know if he's healthy or not. But wouldn't a bullpen of Percival, Fuentes, Wheeler, Howel, and Balfour be lights out.

What about Marte?

How about a package deal? The Rays are interested in Bay and Nady how about one of them and Marte or Grabow?

Would this net the Pirates a big return?

Hey Matt I might have mis-understood you but why would the Yankees trade Chamberlain to the Rays?

AriGold, I think he meant using David Price as a "Joba-type" guy out of the pen come the next couple months.

sorry for the confusion, i was referring to bringing up Price and putting him in the pen like the yankees did with Chamberlain and Cardinals did with Wainwright. Both were highly successful.

We pushed the chat to Thursday afternoon. Maybe at 2 as usual, but maybe a little later.

would bowdon from the red sox be enough to get fuentes?
