« MLBTR Chat Transcript | Main | Felipe Lopez Signs With Cardinals »
According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks have extended Dan Haren's contract for an additional two years while adding an option year after that. The old contract is nullified. Here's a look at his contract now:
Haren turns 28 in September; he reliably provides 220 innings with an ERA below 4.00 (this year, below 3.00).

Great deal for the DBacks, not sure on Webbs extension but that would lock up 2 top 5 cy-young contenders for 3-5 years...

Doesn't that 12.75 look below market value right now, two years before it kicks in?

12.75MM for a cy young contender. Silva got 12MM and is a #5, not a #1. What a great deal by the D'Backs.

Ouch man. Way to kick Mariner fans in the junk.

According the the D'backs' site, he is getting an average of $15.5 million for '11 and '12, not $12.75 million. Still, a steal of a deal for an ace/strong number 2.

And some how they probably still have enough to give Webb a good deal.

"Ouch man. Way to kick Mariner fans in the junk."
He called Silva a #5. That's very generous.

"And some how they probably still have enough to give Webb a good deal."
Most of that ugly deferred money (and the contracts of Johnson and Byrnes, as well) will be off the books by 2011; there'll be plenty in the till to pay Webb.

From the link provided in your comment:
"The deal calls for $7.5 million next year, $8.25 million in 2010 and $12.75 million each in 2011 and 2012. The team option is for $15.5 million, and if the D-backs choose not to pick it up they must pay a $3.5 million buyout."

Wow, great extension by the D-Backs. Anyone think Haren lost millions signing that deal or what?!

They changed it after I posted. It had previously said that 2011 and 2012 were worth a combined $31 million.

I tend to agree with you, but I can understand this from Haren's prospective. If he got hurt some time between now and when he became a free agent, that would be a whole lot of money lost.

Good deal for both sides. As AA pointed out, if an injury occurs he will still be more than set for life. Also, he comes out of the contract at 33. Plenty of time to sign another 3-4 year deal after this one.
Dan Haren is going to make plenty of money over his career.

With the money added on the existing contract, it's really just 2 yrs/$32.5M ($16.25M AAV), or 3/$41M ($13.67M AAV) if/when the D'Backs pick up the option. That's kind of a short commitment for both considering they both seem committed to each other.
