According to MLB.com's Corey Brock, the Dodgers' playoff berth resulted in the Padres receiving better prospects from the August Greg Maddux trade. Brock says the Padres received southpaw Michael Watt and righty Eduardo Perez from the Dodgers. Paul DePodesta describes the prospects on his blog.

Its a shame to give up two youngsters for a guy who wont start in the playoffs, but Maddux seemed to help Clayton on the mound as he did with Bills two years ago.

That is an awful lot to give up for Greg Maddux. I understand that he's a future HOF, but only a half year of him, and he really wasn't that great this year.
Excellent steal for Padres.

This deal came out pretty much even, unless one of these guys suddenly turns into a star. The Dodgers got part of Maddux' salary paid for and his effect on Derek Lowe during both tenures with the Dodgers is unquestioned. He also ate innings, which is what they wanted him to do.

As if Stults or McDonald couldn't make half a dozen starts of 5 innings and put up an ERA of 5.
