« Odds and Ends: Bonds, Crow, Odalis Perez | Main | MLBTR Chat Transcript »
George King of the New York Post chatted with A.J. Burnett's agent Darek Braunecker recently. Braunecker says Burnett does not want the free agent process to drag all winter if he does opt out. Burnett has a list of teams he does not want to play for, and the Yankees aren't on it.
King notes that the Nationals were the only team besides the Blue Jays to offer Burnett five years back in '05. This year King sees the Yanks, Red Sox, and Orioles in the mix. Burnett's preference to be close to his Maryland home could be a factor. A few of other eastern teams that may be looking for pitching include the Braves, Mets, and Phillies.

AJ Burnett is a prime candidate to come down with an injury in 2009. Still, the state of the Orioles rotation demands attention. Burnett and Guthrie would create a good 1-2 punch and the O's have a plethora of SPs at AA and higher going into the 2009 season that could be used to round out the rotation. The Orioles look like they could actually have a good bullpen next year, so we will see. Injuries in the pitching department doomed the 2008 Orioles, will it be the same in 2009?

I don't think the Red Sox are really interested in AJ Burnett. Would they like to sign him? Sure, who wouldn't? I see the Sox offering money to CC Sabathia, trading for Roy Oswalt or Jake Peavy, etc. I'm not just saying this because I'm a Red Sox fan, either. They have a lot of young prospects that could be included (Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden, Justin Masterson, Charlie Zink, Jeff Natale, Jonathan Van Every, Josh Reddick, etc.) A deal could be reached for one of them.

does anyone understand that Roy Oswalt is not going anywhere? Drayton said it, Roy said it, Wade said it.

Yankees 2009 Rotation:
Wang
Sabathia/Burnett
Chamberlain
Mussina/Pettitte
Hughes
Looks pretty dominate especially the 1-3 starters. Hopefully Hughes can redeem himself. He did do good his last 2 starts since getting called up.

I'd like if the Yankees could sign either one of Burnett or Sabathia, obviously I'm more for Sabathia. Santana, Wang, and Chamberlain would be one of the top, if not THE top 3 in MLB. Add Hughes and another starter, and that would be a very dominant rotation. I really hope Hughes turns into the guy the Yankees said he would; just like he showed us in the playoffs in 07 when he came in relief for Clemens, and was absolutely dominant.

I agree that, while Burnett is a huge injury risk, it is a risk worth the Orioles' taking. I don't see any real immediate help from our Farm System. In two years, Tillman and Matusz are promising, but this coming season, we can't go with Guthrie and pray the storm doesn't become a hurricane.

While it probably isn't a good idea for the Jays to resign Burnett, the Jays could up their supposed 4 year $54 million contract a tad and AJ and his agent may consider this fair since the minimum he will get is 4 years and 60 million:
2009: 12 million
2010: 12 million
2011: 16 million
2012: 16 million
Incentives up to $1 million a year can be added based on innings; this way if AJ is fairly healthy he gets his $15 million/yr average...

Yankeesfan4life:
The news outta NY was that Chamberlain's headed back to the bullpen after his trip to the DL, probably for good. Of course with Rivera getting shoulder surgery, wouldn't you want him there anyway?
If the Yanks don't sign Sabathia, and Mussina retires, I don't know if the Yankees have the prospects to trade for a premier pitcher (minus Hughs).

"The news outta NY was that Chamberlain's headed back to the bullpen after his trip to the DL, probably for good."
Not true. Cashman said recently on a ny radio station that the plan is to have Chamberlain start.

the yankees would be foolish to sign burnett..the last thing we need is another thief on the DL

omg i am a yankee fan and watched almost everygame this year and to see joba in the pen kills me...he proved he can dominate as a starter and he is such a wasted arm in the bullpen.

I am the biggest supporter of Joba as a started but let's see the writing on the wall guys. They want Joba to follow Mariano as the closer for the Yankees once Mariano retires. I say keep Joba as a starter and sign CC and AJ and you trade Hughes and a few prospects for Peavy and you got not only the most dominate rotation with CC, AJ, Wang, Peavy and Joba in MLB right now but in baseball history!
