2 points on the red sox front
i did notice that you said lowell had a no trade clause, i thought that was wrong too because i dont remember that. i feel bad for lowell, he signed that deal for less money because he thought the sox would take care of him, i kind of hope the sox honor the commitment in this case. on the other hand, i understand how tex would be to tempting to just pass him up. i think lowell has to prove that he CANT play before he has to prove that he can, i believe thats fair enough
Boras is obviously trying to drive the price up for tek as much as possible due to the lack of numbers, but im almost certain the tigers wont commit to a possible offensive dud, nevermind in terms of a multi-year deal. I think tek will stick around for 2/10, i think he knows that as green as the grass is getting, and the only reason he is getting that is because of the teams and fans love for him. i hope boras doesnt pull him to much, it would be a shame to see tek walk because the devil was able to get him to dance to his tune

It will be interesting to see how ugly Boras is willing to take the Varitek thing.
The fact that he is talking up the Tigers, shows just how weak the market is for Varitek. Anyone with half a pulse over the last month nows that the Tigers are looking to cut payroll not add.
Does it really make any sense that they would look to move Magglio to cut salary so that they could spend money on Varitek. It's almost insulting to baseball people to suggest that, but thats Boras.

Mark my words. Boras won't have a job within 5 years, because no team will want to sign a Boras client, so they will fire Boras and get a new agent.
If Wren trades five players and just gets Peavy back, that will be the worst trade in Braves and maybe baseball history, even worse then the Teixeira trade.
Posted by: BravesRed | October 30, 2008 at 09:38 AM
as long as he can sign players to stupid deals that make both of them alot of money, he will still be in baseball. hes the don king of baseball, love him or hate him, his got juice in the industry, and short of a commish ban, hes here to stay
Posted by: 04Forever | October 30, 2008 at 10:02 AM
JRD,
Mark my words, Boras will still be thelite agent in the game in five years. Boras simply makes his clients money, and the players and union love that. Considering how many top players Boras represents, I don't think teams could simply not sign his clients.
Have you seen how many Boras clients have been drafted in the first round? That guy is set.
Posted by: scribbletone | October 30, 2008 at 10:04 AM
Eh... I doubt youre going to see too much drama over the impending Varitek deal. He's not going to get much from ANY team, so Boras isnt going to waste too much time on a low commission. Besides, Boras has bigger fish to fry this year.
Varitek will sign for 2 years and The Red Sox will carry 3 catchers next year (Tek, Cash and Texan Ranger??)

@'04Forever
what numbers are you talking about? his career stats looks pretty great to me and couple that with his defensive prowess, he's a freaking all-star. Or is there something about him I am missing here?
Posted by: sjdurfey | October 30, 2008 at 10:08 AM
i think it depends what happens with Wakefield as to how many catchers are carried. if Wake walks or doesnt get signed, cash will walk to. I think a trade for a catcher is in the works this offseason somewhere, texas seems to be right since they have 2-3 catchers worth the time and prospects. If Wake walks, tek becomes the backup catchers and the new guy becomes the everyday
Posted by: 04Forever | October 30, 2008 at 10:09 AM
career stats, yes, recent stats are very low. heck, nomar garciaparra has excellent career numbers, but i doubt he gets a top notch deal because he is cooling off considerably. tek is a great man, catcher, but sadly, your stats on contract year have a DIRECT impact on how much money you make the next year on your next contract. hes basically only going to hit $10 million on his reputation, if this were anyone else hed be in the minors or a journeyman. he could bounce back, but i doubt it because of his age and him being a catcher
Posted by: 04Forever | October 30, 2008 at 10:12 AM
scribbletone,
Yes, I do know how many Boras "clients" get drafted in the first round. But, teams won't want to sign them if Boras is the agent for these draftees. He wants to much money for players that suck. (Ex. Andruw Jones, Mark Prior, A-Rod.) Yes, I do think A-Rod sucks.
Posted by: BravesRed | October 30, 2008 at 10:18 AM
@04Forever, again, I must be missing something, because .308/.410/.552 with 33hr and 121rbi's doesnt exactly sound like cooling off to me. Thats right in line with the rest of his career stats with the exception of '05 which were a little higher, but then again that was with texas and everything is bigger is texas.

Braves: you have to give up talent to get talent. Next.
Posted by: tomfromsd | October 30, 2008 at 10:23 AM
Why wont the braves just make the move? Who knows if those single A players will even pan out. Peavy is proven go out and get him make the move. If you want to be at least 500 next year we have to get him.
Posted by: Rono840 | October 30, 2008 at 10:31 AM
@sjdurfey: Whose stats are those? They're certainly not Varitek's last year (.220 /.313 /.359). Wake up, man.
Posted by: H0RAT!0SANZSERIF | October 30, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Rono,
Braves don't want to give up possibly future stars for three years of Peavy. They did that once with Teixeira, and had not even a year of his service.
Posted by: BravesRed | October 30, 2008 at 10:39 AM
JRD,
The argument was if Boras would still be a top agent in 5 years. Clearly he will be, and there is evidence I used before that backs that up.
Your argument has no logic. Boras is doing his job, which is to get as much money for his clients as possible. Most of the wacky stuff he says is just posturing, and from all the money his clients make, it appears he's doing a good job.
Clearly Boras hasn't stopped teams from givin massive money to his clients in the draft, so your point simply isn't valid.
Boras is here to stay, deal with it.
And either way, I would rather the players make more money than just having the billionaire owners pocket all the revenue, those guys are already obscenely rich as is.

Anyone else still convinced that Sabathia is going to end up with the Dodgers?.. It seems like such a great fit to me:
- He'd be back home in California.
- With a bunch of payroll being wiped clean from free agents (Kent, Nomar, Furcal, Lowe, Penny), they should have a fair amount to spend.
- The Dodgers could use a big guy at the top of the rotation who can throw a ton of innings, especially if Lowe heads East.
- CC LOVES TO HIT!
It just seems like such a natural fit, I would be shocked to see him go anywhere else.

@H0RAT
those are Teixeira's stats.
Posted by: sjdurfey | October 30, 2008 at 11:19 AM
i think 04Forever and I were talking about different players without realizing it, haha. Varitek should get very little money this year, other than be a great team leader, he's way past his prime.
Posted by: sjdurfey | October 30, 2008 at 11:21 AM
yeah, i re-read his post, when he said "tek" i took it as typo for "tex".
Posted by: sjdurfey | October 30, 2008 at 11:24 AM
scribbletone,
Is your life consist of trying to start stuff with people over the internet? This stuff is to post your "opinion."
Posted by: BravesRed | October 30, 2008 at 11:32 AM
GoTribe,
I don't see Sabathia going to the Dodgers, since Dodgers are trying to resign those "free agents."
Posted by: BravesRed | October 30, 2008 at 11:37 AM
JRD I understand what your saying on the TEX trade, but with the years and the money on Peavy they wont just trade him away at the deadline. They have to get at least one ace if not two. Peavy and Burnett would be awesome, plus they would still have plenty of money to throw at someone like Burell or even Adam Dunn. I'm really hoping a deal with Kelly Johnson leaving and them picking up Orlando Hudson
Posted by: Rono840 | October 30, 2008 at 12:23 PM
Rono,
I have no problem with Wren trying to get Peavy, but my problem is, is what Towers wants for Peavy. Most likely, Towers is going to want atleast 2 of the 5 top prospects. He also wants three other players with that, just to get one player. Towers will never trade Peavy with his demands. I say sign Lowe or Burnett and someone other low paid starter like Glendon Rusch or Randy Wolf. And trade for Mags.
Posted by: BravesRed | October 30, 2008 at 12:34 PM
JRD:
I figured that at least Kent and Penny would be out of consideration, for sure. I didn't really anticipate them going after Nomar, but if they did it would probably be a pretty reasonable deal.
I totally agree they'll pursue Furcal and Lowe. IF Lowe indeed does have a preference to go back East, then that leaves Furcal.
That's just my impressions thus far, ha I'm definitely not an expert!

"- With a bunch of payroll being wiped clean from free agents (Kent, Nomar, Furcal, Lowe, Penny), they should have a fair amount to spend."
Don't include Furcal in those calculations. Both the Dodgers and Furcal are far too interested in sticking together. Still, Kent + Lowe essentially = CC and it would really set a scary dominant rotation, and would do it as a L-R-R-L-R (assuming McDonald), which is about as good a blend as it gets. It would also mean 5 guys who can throw 95.
Posted by: AA | October 30, 2008 at 01:39 PM
I think the odds are not in Dodgers favor with both BoSox and Yankees both pursuing Sabathia.
Posted by: BravesRed | October 30, 2008 at 02:20 PM
Uhh no.. It was called conversing. You made a statement, I refuted it.
Sorry for disagreeing. You're right, Boras, who does an unreal job as an agent, will lose his job because teams don't like it..
I'm normally one of the people on this site trying to sort through all the pitiful fights and dumb homertastic comments, from guys like Red Sox Dynasty. What I did was completely different. It's called disagreeing.
Posted by: scribbletone | October 30, 2008 at 02:30 PM
"Yes, I do think A-Rod sucks."
Then you have no idea how the game of baseball works. The guy is a great hitter in a sabermetric world and a scouting world, and he can run as well. He plays a premium position with perfectly acceptable, though not spectacular, defense.
His contract situation may piss people off, but he has huge marketing value to go along with his value as a player. People may think he is a jerk, I certainly did when I met him about 5 years ago. It doesn't mean he can't mash the ball at a HOF level and sell tickets and jerseys.
