« White Sox Considering Dye Trade | Main | Braves Near Peavy Deal? »
MLB.com's Ken Gurnick asked Dodgers GM Ned Colletti about the vague Russell Martin trade speculation that's been making the rounds. His reply: "We aren't trading Martin. I've never brought that up to anybody." It never made sense - the Dodgers already have too many question marks to be creating another one at catcher.

Why would they? He'll be the best backstop in the N.L. for at least the next 12 years if they keep him.

News Flash:
Cardinals not trading 1B Albert Pujols.

Good. Glad to see Colletti is knocking this rumor out. Better to publicly say he's not looking to trade Martin so that Martin doesn't come to Spring Training feeling unappreciated. While it may not matter right now, it could make Martin look elsewhere once he becomes a free agent in a few years.

"News Flash:

This is just a dumb post. There haven't been rumors of Pujols being traded, but because of Gammons there have been rumors of Martin being traded.

Well that ends that insanity.

How is anything in the NY Post ever a legitimate rumor anyway?

I'd take McCann for that honor.

McCann is better offensively also Ryan Doumit looks like he might be a better offensive catcher we will have to wait and see on that one.

Peter Gammons is DONE.

McCann and Soto are better offensively and I think Soto is definitely a better all around catcher. I think most people would take McCann in a second over Martin, and many would take Soto as well. Martin is very good though...just saying.

1) Doumit has career year written all over him.
2) McCann doesn't have Martin's speed or overall defensive ability (Martin is probably the best plate blocker in baseball).
3) Soto was a rookie and you can't say he is better until he produces over 3 years like Martin

Damn.

Exactly AA, it seems like a lot of times people overlook the most important aspect of a catcher, the defensive part. Martin is a great backstop and he can hit, not to mention he can run for a catcher, he is a patient hitter and he plays so many games back there. Martin is a stud. Soto and McCann are beasts, no doubt, but I think I take Martin if I can choose between the 3. Although they are all certainly outstanding players. Plus, Martin is a franchise guy. I don't know what that means, but he is one of them. :-)

Franchise Player = Face of a team. Martin certainly is the face of the Dodgers. Manny may have all the hype (if he returns), but Martin is the true face and heart of the Dodgers.

"Soto was a rookie and you can't say he is better until he produces over 3 years like Martin"
I can say that the only year he played, he was just flat out better...I don't know what to tell you.
Also take a look at the VORP differences between McCann and Martin. Do you really believe that Martin saved 20(!) runs more than McCann with his defense? I don't...maybe 10. Also, Soto is also definitely above average defensively...so he was definitely the better all around catcher last year, and certainly offensively. I agree though, lets see how he does in his sophmore campaign. Martin is awesome, and they are all beasts, but I'm taking him 3rd out of NL catchers.

I can't say that there is a wrong answer out there...you can't really go wrong with any of them. Watching Soto last year has made me appreciate the catching position more...having a young stud out there is just fun to watch. The Cubs, Dodgers, and Braves would all be absolutely stupid to even entertain the idea of trading any of them...which was crazy about this whole Martin thing.
