« Heyman's Latest: Lowe, Teixeira, Guillen | Main | Rosenthal's Latest: Furcal, Burnett, Halladay »
MLB.com's Chris Haft talked to Edgar Renteria's agent Jeff Lane, who said he's actively negotiating with the Giants. At least six teams are interested in Renteria, but his future is tied to Rafael Furcal. Furcal is expected to sign first, and the shortstops share many of the same suitors.
The Giants also have serious interest in Orlando Hudson. It'd be surprising to see them sign two middle infielders though.

ohhh, NOT A SECOND ROUND DRAFT PICK!!!!
if you can't read my sarcasm, why would you worry about giving up a 2nd round pick? if the giants really wany furcal, i'm sure they can bid higher than the A's and go 4 years.

Actually I'm kinda surprised that people aren't waiting until after the time to offer arbitration to go after rent-a-wreck. If he's signed before then it's an automatic loss of a draft pick. But if you wait until after arbitration... well it's likely the Tigers won't risk offering arbitration.

Maybe because Renteria isn't worth the contract he would demand anyway???

This looks like they are conceding that the A's will get Furcal.

He would probably hit better upon a return to the NL, but as a Red Sox fan, this guy should not be signed as a starting SS unless DESPERATE.

minnesotawins; Kevin Slowley, Yunel Escobar, Justin Masterson, Chase Headley, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, and Tim Linececum are all wonderful reasons not to give up 2nd round picks just like that. Especially for a guy who underacheieves like Renteria on a team so far from contention like the Giants.
Just my opinion.

I see where you're headed with this 2nd round argument insomniac... but i don't know... i think actually being right would help your argument... just a thought... something to look into
Scherzer - 1st round 11th overall
Lincecum - 1st round 10th overall
Kershaw - 1st round 7th overall

It would be great to see the Giants sign Renteria.
Why need bring in a washed up shortstop to replace the washed up Vizquel...
Makes perfect sense in the Giants' World....

I threw up in my mouth a little when I read this

Renteria has always proven to be a really good NL player. His worst years have been when he played for Bos and Det 1 year a piece. Maybe his comfort level is just that much better on a NL team. I think it would be a pretty good pickup for SF.

Dumb idea for the Giants.
It looked like Emmanuel Burriss made the necessary adjustments at the plate towards the end of the season to be a respectable major league SS. It's not like the Giants are one piece away from contending and even if they were, Renteria wouldn't be it. It just doesn't make sense. They'd be better served trying to convince Adam Dunn to be their 1B and giving that money to him.

I seriously thought the idea of Sabean signing ANOTHER over-the-hill was just the reporting looking for dirt to throw around. The fact that Sabean might actually go through with this blows my mind.
I think we all agree that Sabean should go after Furcal and outbid the A's. He's younger, drops bombs, has the ability to swipe 2nd base and 3rd sequentially, and he's GOOD. And younger.
