« Offseason Outlook: Philadelphia Phillies | Main | Rosenthal's Latest: Furcal, Bradley, Greinke »
THURSDAY: More Giants info, courtesy of John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. GM Brian Sabean is looking for offense in the infield, but he considers Cain untouchable. Jonathan Sanchez or various pitching prospects could be trade bait instead.
Sabean also met with the agents for various free agent hitters and relievers, including Orlando Hudson and Bob Howry.
WEDNESDAY: Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News has some interesting rumors this evening.

The Phillies won't trade Rollins. The fans would hate Amaro if he did that.
Posted by: tjsurf | November 05, 2008 at 09:07 PM
I cannot see the Phillies listen to any offers on Jimmy. Who would bat lead off and play shortstop? Jason Donald is a few years away, and Rafeal Furcal is the only one close to his his caliber. I'd love to know where Baggerly heard this.
Posted by: mattxner | November 05, 2008 at 09:09 PM
Aaron back to the White Sox would be the greatest move Kenny has ever made. Sox fans love Aaron Rowand still. If he came back to Chicago the fans would go nuts. Not to mention he would be a perfect fit in centerfield for the next 4 years. What would it take to get him. Would the Giants consider Anderson, Konerko and a PTBNL for Rowand and one their young pitchers?
Posted by: Tough | November 05, 2008 at 09:10 PM
Rollins is essentially untouchable. Not only is he a homegrown talent and an established team leader but his contract is below market value. The Phillies are historically cheap, but not that cheap.
Posted by: mford | November 05, 2008 at 09:43 PM
How about Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley for Dave Roberts and Randy Winn?
This Baggerly guy just made himself unreliable for life...what a joke.

Title of Baggerly's article tomorrow:
"Cardinals willing to shop Pujols."
Posted by: 7thinningstretch | November 05, 2008 at 09:46 PM
No way the Phils are trading Rollins...As long as he wants to be in Philly,he'll be in Philly.
Posted by: JT89 | November 05, 2008 at 09:58 PM
7thinningstretch - Are you saying Baggarly didn't hear a Rollins rumor? What's your source? Who the F do you know? Baggarly knows a hell of lot more people in the know than you do. If he says he heard rumors, then he heard rumors. How is that so hard to believe? Who are you to question call him a joke? Nobody. That's who.
Posted by: nostocksjustbonds | November 05, 2008 at 10:01 PM
I highly doubt the Sox are looking at Rowand. They seem to be going in a different direction.
Posted by: tsizzle | November 05, 2008 at 10:19 PM
nostocks,
You sir are a f*$@ing idiot. You really believe that he heard something from a reliable source? Give me one reason why the Phillies would do trade Rollins.
This guy writes for a Bay area paper, and is making up rumors about a Bay area native. He probably heard this from fans on the street who would love to see their hometown World Series champion play in CA. So if that is the case...then I guess you are right, it is possible that he "heard" this rumor.

7inning
Its a rumor, chill out. Its not as if the Phillies recived a great trade rumor form ANY team, they would just turn it down. It seems like just weeks ago that Philly fans were Booing Rollins. Oh yes, it was weeks ago.
Posted by: CB30 | November 05, 2008 at 10:59 PM
I am chill man, I was attacked so I fought back.
Did we boo Rollins? Absolutely, he forgot how good he had it for the time being but all was forgiven. He's not going anywhere.
We can all admit that it is irritating when writers with no credibility fabricate rumors.

What direction would the Sox be going in?
Posted by: kdub | November 05, 2008 at 11:46 PM
Well, it took all of one season for the Giants to regret giving a big contract to an offensively-challenged OF (2008 OPS+ of 94 - yuck). But of course, he posted OPS+'s of 93 and 86 in the two years prior to his breakout in that bandbox in Philly, so is it any surprise? And fans of other teams are clamoring for his return? Wish you luck with that.
Posted by: ThinkBlech | November 06, 2008 at 01:31 AM
I don't know if it would interest the Sox, but I could see an exchange of Swisher for Rowand, or possibly some low level prospect and salary relief. Rowand's grit is appreciated in SF, but he isn't the type of defensive player the giants need. He was also a mistake signing in that he is much too old. I think it would be best to rid his contract and continue with the youth movement.
Posted by: The Juice | November 06, 2008 at 01:39 AM
You all should actually read the link before throwing such trash around.
Tim kind of messed up here, as Baggarly didn't mention these as rumors, only ideas. And it is rather clear in the post. So chill.

Facts on Rollins
1. He and Charlie had there issues this year
2. His value is very high right now, givin he is a gold glover and he is signed way under value
3. The Phillies have a shortstop in Jason Donald who is ready for the majors
4. The Phillies need to clear payroll.
I wouldn't deal him unless I get something really good in return
Also how about Aaron Rowand back to the Phillies? He would fill their need for a righthanded bat and could play left field.
Posted by: tazman | November 06, 2008 at 06:28 AM
I could see Rowand for Konerko straight up. While Rowand is more valuable, Konerko's 12/year contract runs out after 2010 and Rowand will still be making 12/year in 2011-2012 for being medicocre.
However, seriously doubt KW can pull it off due to Konerko's no-trade clause. No reason to want to move to San Fran.
Posted by: Teetz | November 06, 2008 at 08:20 AM
The Giants are only about seven good players from making the NL Wildcard! Go Giants!
Posted by: Big Mac | November 06, 2008 at 08:25 AM
Donald is not ready for the majors. he's never had at at-bat at AAA, and his glove is average at best right now. maybe in the second half of 2009, but on opening day, no chance.
why on earth would the Phillies trade for Rowand? the whole reason they didn't resign him was that they didn't want to commit to that many years & dollars--why would they change their mind after he put up a mediocre at BEST season where he slugged all of .410?
the Phillies aren't trading Rollins unless they're getting something ridiculously valuable back. would the Giants trade Lincecum? obviously not. so it's not happening.
Posted by: ae | November 06, 2008 at 08:28 AM
1. Rollins ain't going nowhere. Jason Donald is a better bet to be traded.
2. Aaron Rowand isn't an above average bat in a corner OF spot. He's a good CF, and his value lies in that position.
3. The only FA I'd consider signing if I'm Brian Sabean is Orlando Hudson and/or some low key relief acquisitions.
The Giants really, really need to trade Brian Wilson, by the way.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 06, 2008 at 08:29 AM
"The Giants are only about seven good players from making the NL Wildcard! Go Giants!"
Which equates to about 2-3 good players away from winning the NL West. Go Giants!
Posted by: melonis rex | November 06, 2008 at 08:31 AM
"What direction would the Sox be going in?"
Youth. Speed. Not only that, but there's already a guy we have in Swisher that should not be playing centerfield, we don't need someone else.
Sox fans need to just let go. We're better off without Rowand. And I'm glad the Angels gave that insane contract to Hunter, because we're better off without him, too.
Posted by: tsizzle | November 06, 2008 at 08:43 AM
Tough:
Are you friggin crazy?
"Would the Giants consider Anderson, Konerko and a PTBNL for Rowand and one their young pitchers?"
What is it about some Sox fans that have this odd perception of Rowand that he is some insanely mega talented baseball players. He IS NOT that good and that trade you just proposed is ridiculous to say the least. Also from the Giants perspective why would they give up a younger player who they just signed a long-term deal for to get an older player on the downslide of his career that is still making a hefty amount of money (Konerko).
My God do the dumb trade proposals ever end.
Rowand does not play for the Sox and he never will play for the Sox again, it is not that big of a deal he is not that great, get over it.
Posted by: SoxWin | November 06, 2008 at 08:51 AM
I'm all for the Sox & Giants swapping Rowand and Konerko - they're both overpayed players with no-trade clauses.
The Giants are in sore need of a power bat, so I guess it could be possible.
Posted by: Cold Golden Falstaff | November 06, 2008 at 09:03 AM
""the giants need to trade Brian Wilson."
????????
Are you joking me???? Do you remember who our closer was before Wilson??? You idiot. Wilson had 40 saves and was an All Star on a losing team. Plus hes 26. Yeah a team with a bad BP should trade their best arm. Moron.
Giants should sign Biemal and keep building the farm. Learn from the Phils. No dumb signings or bad trades.
BTW
According to MLB.com 3 out of the 5 best minor league pitchers in the league are in the Giants organization and the best overall minor league team was the Giants high A ball team. BE PATIENT!!! Lets Sabes keep building the farm!!!
Posted by: Ohan | November 06, 2008 at 09:20 AM
Brian Wilson stays.
If you look at the previous season, all he threw was fastballs. He worked with Robb Nen in S.T. and learned a H3ll of a lot. One more S.T. with Nen and he should get his walk ratio down as well.
I wouldn't mind us signing someone like Beimel or Affeldt to shore up the pen. We have some great kids in Hinshaw and Romo.
Posted by: 55saveslives | November 06, 2008 at 09:51 AM
Aaron Rowand sucks. He's a mediocre defensive center fielder without the bat to make up for it. When you consider that his contract overpays him big time as well, I just think there is no way any team could possibly think about taking on that contract. The deal is just going to get worse as time passes as well.
Posted by: scribbletone | November 06, 2008 at 11:23 AM
This Baggerly guy is an idiot and I don't think he heard this from anyone. I think he's making it up. He completely looked over one little fact, Jimmy Rollins is a 10 and 5 guy (For those of you who do not know, 10 years of big league service and the last 5 with the same team), so according the the CBA, he has the right to veto any trade. Basically it comes down to this, give the Phillies a boatload of prospects and Major League talent AND pay 4 years $25 million per (at least) on top of what he already has. Who is going to do that?
Posted by: dagodfather | November 06, 2008 at 12:23 PM
Just because Jimmy rollins may or may not be available this writer is unreliable for life? Newsflash everybody, Jimmy Rollins isn't that good. He just never shuts the hell up and plays with beats like Howard and Utley so people think he is good. Rollins has had one great season, one pretty good one, and the rest are just average or below average. I am not just some angry Met fan, Utley, Hamels, and Howard to a degree are all elite players. Rollins just isn't. He truly is overated, and he just isn't that good. He isn't bad, he is a very good shortstop, and he is okay with the stick, but he is not some elite player. Just look at his numbers though. He has only had one really good season that was above league average, and that was 07. Trading Rollins for a budle of prospects, and signing Furcal would drastically improve this team.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 06, 2008 at 01:14 PM
"Title of Baggerly's article tomorrow:
"Cardinals willing to shop Pujols."
No, comparing Rollins (who has had one above average season in his career, maybe 2) to Pujols is what actually is a joke.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 06, 2008 at 01:16 PM
"Give me one reason why the Phillies would do trade Rollins."
I will give you a reason. Because they could trade him and his extremely affordable salary somewhere to rebuild their joke of a farm system, and then they can sign Rafael Furcal, who is a much better player then Rollins is, which would drastically improve their team, you know, actually getting a guy who can get on base into your leadoff spot. That is one reason.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 06, 2008 at 01:19 PM
"the Phillies aren't trading Rollins unless they're getting something ridiculously valuable back. would the Giants trade Lincecum? obviously not. so it's not happening."
Once again, Rollins isn't even close to as good at his position as Lincecum is at his. Somebody, please tell me what makes J-Roll so special? Outside of 2007, what has he actually done to be considered some elite shortstop in this league? He is a nice player, but can somebody tell me what makes him better then Jose Reyes, or Hanley Ramirez, or Raffy Furcal, or JJ Hardy, or even guys like Stephen Drew, or Yunel Escobar? Look at the numbers. Why is he better then any of these guys?
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 06, 2008 at 01:26 PM
I wouldn't mind having Rowand back in CF in Chicago. And whoever said we were better off Without Hunter is wrong. We ARE better without signing Fukudome. We still dont have a good CF. And if it wasnt for Carlos Quentin we would be in bad shape.
Posted by: ChiCity Sox | November 06, 2008 at 01:32 PM
nrmax: yes, that was exactly my point.
Posted by: ae | November 06, 2008 at 02:27 PM
Wonder if the Sox would consider Rowand for Vasquez? There might have to be some form of an arm included, but I like Javy going back to the NL, and the Sox could have Rowand back. I think the Giants would do this, and I think the Sox would also.
Does this seem palpable?
Posted by: The Juice | November 06, 2008 at 04:33 PM
Juice, I'd make that deal, and I think both teams would as well. Sure, Vasquez costs too much to be a 3/4 starter, but aside from Zito's bad contract, the Giants' rotation is the best value in baseball. Getting Vasquez to soak up 200 innings and get 180-200 K's as your #3 starter in exchange for dumping Rowand's contract is worth it.
