« Rosenthal's Latest: Johnson, Peavy, Dempster | Main | Hanshin Preparing $18 Million Offer For Kawakami »
Koji Uehara is officially coming to MLB, according to NPB Tracker. The free agent hurler hired SFX to represent him.
Based on Japanese reports, Newman says the Mets and Angels are eyeing Uehara as a reliever, while the Orioles like him as a starter. Newman likes him with the Cardinals as a swingman. Uehara, a 33 year-old control pitcher, was profiled here.

I'd love to have him with the O's. Any improvement in the starting rotation is greatly welcomed.

It's nice to see the O's finally looking into improving their international scouting department.. hopefully they'll sign someone soon though

If there's any truth to the O's rumor, I'd be fairly excited. Not only would it have real and symbolic value as far as demonstrating a sincere and concerted effort at expanding and improving our international scouting efforts, but it could go a long way toward addressing the team's biggest (along with shortstop) hole this off-season. And it doesn't hurt that Uehara is known as a command pitcher, given the issues that so many of the Birds' starters have had with control. Who knows...maybe guys like Cabrera and Liz- younger pitchers with incredible upside and incredibly bad command- could learn a thing or two. The team's willingness to use him as a starter should put them on at least equal footing with the other teams vying for his services...as should his lack of familiarity with the Orioles' recent futility!
On a final note- and I admit, this is a reach- signing Uehara might, theoretically, give Baltimore some credibility, visibility, and/or allure with other Japanese players looking to come to America to play...namely Yu Darvish (I said it was a long shot! Until he signs with Boston, I can always hope!!!)
