« Hairston, Weathers To Test Market | Main | Nationals Not Pursuing Manny »
According to Jack Magruder of the East Valley Tribune, D'Backs catcher Miguel Montero is a popular name in trade discussions. He may be traded to address the team's second base vacancy. Mark Loretta and Adam Kennedy, who are in the $4MM or less range, were deemed too expensive.
Montero, 25, hit .255/.330/.435 in 207 plate appearances this year. He's under team control through 2012. Magruder suggests the Red Sox, Tigers, Reds, Astros, and Brewers as possible matches. Some of those clubs do have decent second base prospects.
Magruder adds that the D'Backs have received inquiries on Eric Byrnes, but don't see a contract swap that'd make sense.

How about Ronnie Belliard and Ian Desmond (AA) to ARI for Montero who could platoon with Jesus Flores.
You'd have to put more of a premium on #2 catchers than most teams, but why waste a roster spot on a guy who only plays once a week?

I would like a Montero and Hanigan platoon if I were the Reds. Wouldn't cost you as much as a catcher from Texas and would be two young guys you could groom for the next 4-5 years.
The Reds have some options at 2B depending on what the Dbacks are looking for. Ryan Freel would be a one year veteran, but I doubt they want that move. Danny Richar is a prospect who might make sense with another piece. I think Jeff Keppinger could be very effective at 2B for the D'backs.
Start with one of those guys and make it work with some other pieces and I think both teams fill some holes.

How about Aaron Heilman, Luis Castillo, and Dylan Owen for Montero and Byrnes, with the Mets picking up all of Byrnes contract and half of Castillo's. The Mets then flip Castro for whatever (there you go baseballfanatic, I am suggesting the Mets pickup a catcher! ;-) ).
The D'Backs get a cheap 2B option and get rid of Byrnes contract, they get a fringy starting prospect in Owen, and a useful arm in Heilman that could pitch out of the pen, or more likely as a starter for the Backs, who would be a cheap innings eater if nothing else, but could have some nice success pitching in the NL West. Just a thought.

More importantly though, the D'Backs shed some salary that could be much better used elsewhere. Losing Byrnes or Montero doesn't hurt them much because they are replaced (or not even replaced, since they have guys that are already plugged into their spots) by Co-Jack and Snyder. Castillo is sort of bleh, I know, but he could still lead off for the D'Backs and post a .360 OBP. Free's up money to try to keep Dunn or sign a big name pitcher. I just thought this up off the top of my head in about 12 seconds, so I get if it doesn't make sense, just throwing it out there.

How much longer and money is left on Byrnes contract?

When I hear any rumor of a team with an extra catcher in need of a Middle Infielder, I think.....how much would the Sox have to kick in on Lugo to convince someone to take the bum?
Looks like another team can get crossed off the list for Lugo though; if $4million is too much for Loretta, then the Sox would have to somehow figure out how to eat $6+ Million of Lugos $9 Mill per season.
Ouch, that was a bad signing.
Only Sox 2B prospect at the moment is Yamaico Navarro, but he is a pretty unknown guy and wouldn't be able to help a big club for another 3-4 years most likely.

The Astros have Drew Sutton, but I have no idea if that's equal value. I'd love if the Stros could give up Matsui, while paying half his salary for Montero and let Sutton play 2nd everyday in Houston. But, I just can't ever see that happening.

estuartj: A. that would be more value then i believe Montero to be worth and B. why would the Nats want a catcher? Flores is a solid option and between Nieves and Montz I think they can find a decent back-up. The Nats aren't a playoff team they shouldn't waste their resources on a backup catcher.

Just putting this out there, though I'm not in favor of it: The White Sox need a backup catcher and young Chris Getz is a solid and very young middle infielder. If there was going to be a trade of one of the better position players in the Sox farm system, I'd hope there more coming back than just a backup-callibur catcher. Maybe a Double-A type.

What could we get for Snyder?
Posted by: Big Mac | November 13, 2008 at 12:21 PM
Why would they ever trade Snyder? Snyder was one of the best catchers offensively and defensively last season. Plus, remember earlier this season when Snyder went down with his testicular fracture? Brandon Webb was clearly uncomfterable, and shook off Montero and Hammock at least once an at bat, and neither Montero or Hammock were capible of stopping Dan Haren's splitter. Snyder is out of the trade equation.
We should try to package a Chad Tracy in with him as another decent left handed bat.

Rival executives, by the way, perceive that the Diamondbacks will definitely listen to offers for Chris Snyder, who is highly respected by advance scouts but is marching steadily through arbitration and is becoming expensive.
Out of the question?
Posted by: Big Mac | November 13, 2008 at 04:27 PM
Yes Snyder is out of the question just because it is clear that Brandon Webb wasn't the same pitcher without him catching, and the D-Backs are counting on Webb and Haren to put the team on their backs and carry them to the playoffs. That becomes a lot more difficult if Webb is comfortable with the guy who is catching him and has to second guess his pitches. I think the chemistry between Webb and Snyder and Haren and Snyder is to valuable right now to let Snyder go. Plus, I think he finished the season ranked 4th or 5th in the NL in offensive production by a catcher. Right now he is worth the money he is getting.
