Ken Rosenthal has a theory on Scott Boras' goals in the free agent game:
The crux of the theory seems to be that Boras would want Manny near his Newport Beach headquarters to better babysit him. Personally I have a hard time seeing any team sign two of the big three free agents, and it's difficult to picture Manny as an Angel.
Rosenthal doesn't see the Dodgers as major players, partially based on recent comments made by the McCourts.

hahahahahahahaha!

That Boras excuse for Manny doesn't even make sense - once he gets Manny that 4-year deal, why would Boras care any more? Plus, if it's true that Lowe wants to play so bad for Boston, why would Boras purposely try and derail his clients wishes? C'mon...

Nobody should ever take Rosenthal seriously.
Posted by: eric23 | November 26, 2008 at 03:40 PM
why would he care where they end up so long as he gets them the most money?
Posted by: GeneralManager | November 26, 2008 at 03:41 PM
I think Rosenthal read my earlier post on here and went with it. hahahaa,
To sum up, I suggested that if Teixeira signed with the Red Sox, Varitek would magically get a much larger/longer deal then anyone thought reasonable.
"Magically" being the euphamism for Boras demanding that if the Sox want Teixeira, they have to give Tek what he wants too.

Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe to Red Sox
CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira to Yankees
Manny Ramirez to Dodgers
Adam Dunn to Angels
Posted by: Mattchu12 | November 26, 2008 at 03:45 PM
To me the least likely of those three teams to sign two of the big three free agents is LAA. I could see the Yankees doing it, and even though Boston doesn't need to they could sign two big free agents. I don't think the Angels have the payroll to do it unless Moreno has changed his mind.
Posted by: pageian | November 26, 2008 at 03:45 PM
The reason for Sabathia to sign elsewhere is clear. CC will break the bank anywhere he goes so if he signs for a simlar deal the Yanks offer somewhere else....that will drive Derek Lowe's price sky high. All in all, Boras would be in more money.
The Manny thing obviously makes no sense for reasons stated above by rememberthecoop
Posted by: Teetz1 | November 26, 2008 at 03:48 PM
Boras has no control over where Sabathia signs. He doesn't represent him.
Posted by: AndrewYF | November 26, 2008 at 03:50 PM
I think the Red Sox should go get Lowe and Texiera just to see the effect it would have on the Yankees. Think about it- Red Sox get two big free agents to add to their team, the Angels and the Dodgers, with the built in California advantage, remain in the bidding for CC, all of the sudden the Yankees must have Burnett, even if it takes a seven year deal, and probably sign Manny too, even though he's a terrible fit. Then what- Ben Sheets? Trade away Hughes, Jackson, maybe Montero and Betances or Kennedy as well for Peavy? Just fun all around. I for one will send them a dollar right now just to see that happen.
Posted by: jakec | November 26, 2008 at 03:58 PM
To me there is absolutly no way the Dodgers can't resign manny. I mean with all the players they may lose via free agency they need to keep one of their big guns back and that's pretty much manny.
Posted by: jimbo77 | November 26, 2008 at 03:59 PM
I am confident Scott Boras is the Anti-Christ...
Posted by: Scott | November 26, 2008 at 04:00 PM
Oh how boring would the offseason be without Scott Boars to bad mouth!!
Posted by: SFnative | November 26, 2008 at 04:02 PM
"Boras has no control over where Sabathia signs. He doesn't represent him."
he could do everything in his power to make sure Tex doesnt go to ANA. that could result in ANA going after their plan B, CC.
Posted by: GeneralManager | November 26, 2008 at 04:02 PM
The Angels have the money to do it. I just doubt they have the stomach for Manny.
Garland and K-Rod take care of of CC's cost.
Anderson + Teix + Rivera + a few $m to cover Cabrera (in the trade with the White Sox) gets you over $20m for Manny.
Assuming Vlad and Escobar aren't resigned after 2009 you would shave another $25m off the 2010 payroll.
Now if the Angels can just move GMJ, Justin Spier and convince Vlad to come back at a really reduced rate they could be in great shape for the future without having to raise payroll much.

Straight Up SF...
I say the Angels Sign Manny and Tex to add with Vladdy...
I want my M T V

I hate scott boras. . I understand he gets the biggest deals in the 'best' cities, but he comes across to me as a complete d bag. putting together a theory of an agent that isn't even his, he truly is the epitome of a fat ass blogger

Adam Dunn to Angels
"convince Vlad to come back at a really reduced rate they could be in great shape for the future without having to raise payroll much."
What makes you think he would have any intent on doing such a thing? Vlad's second half consisted of typical Vlad numbers, which suggests that all he needed was a little bit of rest. There is no reason to expect him to want to take a pay cut, especially considering he has played for below market during the past 5 seasons and will only be 33 when he becomes a free agent.

That would be collusion. It's just as illegal when players do it as it is when owners do it. In fact, the anti-collusion rule was written in response to a joint holdout by Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale.

"Nobody should ever take Rosenthal seriously."
He's actually one of the best reporters in terms of reliable rumors. He and Gammons are the cream of the crop.
Posted by: icedrake523 | November 26, 2008 at 05:03 PM
AA: Completely agree. Vlad will not take a paycut whatsoever. I say he may be in the neighborhood of $17-$20 million next season.
I also posted earlier today that Adam Dunn was willing to play first base when teams approached him about his contract He's adequate at first and they need to leverage Adam Dunn talks to get Tex to drop his offer. In the end, Tex is the face of the Angels franchise if they can sign him.
Hopefully when the smoke clears, I would love to see Tex at 1B and Dunn at DH. If they don't secure Tex, they need to go after Manny and Dunn. If that doesn't work, then Dunn and Burrell. Not the best scenario, but something they have to settle for.

Two words: not happening.
Rosenthal is high.
Oh wait, that's five words.

bjsguess-
1. GMJ ain't going anywhere. Hello negative trade value. Justin Speier also has negative value as well.
2. You forgot about John Lackey. Lackey's due for a bpretty big raise/hits FA after 2009. I'd think the Angels plan on extending him, and if they do, best case scenario would probably be an extension similar to the one Mark Bueherle got, maybe higher dollar value.
3. Vlad might come back at *slightly* below market value, but he won't come back at a really reduced rate. He'll be paid like a top DH will be.

The McCheaps really need to sell the Dodgers. This is a storied franchise in one of the most lucrative markets in all of baseball & yet here they sit talking about 50 little league fields instead of signing ball players. Your job is not to be worried about little league, your job is to be worried about your MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM!! I'm sick of how f*#$ing cheap these owners are. We're being outclassed by the Angels? REALLY? The Angels spend money, the Angels go after top free agents & the Angels consistently F&*^ing WIN!!! Enough sell the team and go buy the Marlins Frank McCheap you're no longer welcome in LA!!!
Posted by: Matty D | November 26, 2008 at 05:53 PM
if arte moreno wants to spend he will land CC and Tex. he has no problem spending the money.
lets say the angels offer CC a contract of 140 million over 6 years with 2 options years worth 25 million.. something like that easily gets CC. CC doesnt seem like a new york kinda guy. anaheim isnt a cake walk or anything but the fans arent going to turn on you in week number 2
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | November 26, 2008 at 05:55 PM
Imagine what Koufax would have gotten in todays market. year he retired 27-9 27 complete games 323 innings 241 hits 74 runs 5 shutouts, only 77 walks, and a measley 312 K's ERA 1.73
Then he retired, that is sad.
41 games started, with a blown out elbow!!

The Dodgers have one of the highest payrolls in all of baseball (I think its 7th-8th). Higher than any other team in the NL West, and I think higher than all the other NL teams with the exception of the Mets and Cubs.
Just because Ned Coletti was a dumba*s and gave out huge contracts to Juan Pierre, Jason Schmidt, and Andruw Jones, doesn't mean the Dodgers don't have a big payroll and McCourt doesn't spend money.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 26, 2008 at 06:36 PM
I may be in the minority on this one, but I personally don't have anything bad to say about Boras. Sure, he gets the most he can for hsi clients, but isn't that his job? I wouldn't mind having him represent me if I was a baseball player.

Did you read what they told The Times today? They DO NOT SPEND MONEY!! They sign retreads for short contracts then lose everybody. Andrew Jones is being paid 16 million, Pierre 9 Million, Schmidt 11 Million. Can you name another person on the roster who get's paid? Kuroda. Forgot about him. This is a team bereft of stars. Now compare that to the Angels. Guerrero received a 6 year deal when the Blue could've had him. Torri Hunter had a great season. They are gonna get CC or Tex or both. They are a team that is being built on a winning tradition. They have a coach that was taught under the tutelage of the great Tommy Lasorda not a has been who is in the twilight of his career. Torre would not have even gotten this team to the playoffs if it weren't for Manny. Colletti is a joke & should've been fired long ago, but he's a house boy, he's the McCourt's punching bag. Someone to blame cause they won't spend on GOOD free agents.
Posted by: Matty D | November 26, 2008 at 09:42 PM
you are so right Matty, they wouldn't of even had Manny, not to mention Blake if they hadn't got the trading team to pay the salary. I think the Dodgers have cashflow problems, what other explanation could there be?
Posted by: indybucfan | November 26, 2008 at 10:25 PM
rememberthecoop- I agree. Boras is doing his job, and he does it well.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 26, 2008 at 10:25 PM
Boras is one of the most ahteable guys in sports history but at the same time you have to admire his talent. The guy is good. I don't see an issue with these predictions except I see C.C. going to the Yanks. Lowe to the Sox could happen but it seems like the Sox aren't interested for the price. Tek and Tex are both definetly wearing Sox jerseys next season. And Manny to the Angels is definetly possible if they lose out on Texwhich they will so who knows.
Posted by: evilsauron2 | November 26, 2008 at 10:40 PM
A. I didn't suggest that GMJ or Spier could be moved without eating any of the contract. To the contrary, they will only be moved by eating a portion of the contract or taking back bad contracts. That said, if you can eat half of GMJ's contract you save $5-6m/year over the next 3 years. That's a lot of scratch.
B. Vlad is not worth $15m/year for the years beyond 2009. When he was signed the guy was hitting 40 HR's, stealing 40 bases and playing a solid RF.
Now he is hitting 25 HR's, not running, and unable to man a defensive position. And while I am aware of his 2nd half I also noticed his 1st half. Looking at his OPS you will find MONTHS of:
April March: 780
May: 676
July: 854
He had an absurd Sept/Oct posting a 1152 OPS that was aided by an equally absurd 436 BAbip.
I think Vlad will continue to be a productive hitter for some time. It's reasonable to expect a 300 BA with 25 HR's. For a DH with bad knees that doesn't equal $15m+/year. You can find similar production for less.
Finally, my point about him taking less money is simple. Vlad chose the Angels because he wanted to be here. It wasn't the biggest offer or only place he could have played. Since then, the team has been a perennial playoff team. Every article written about the guy talks about how comfortable he is. IMO, Vlad has made his fortune. I could easily see him coming back on a $10m/year contract to play DH for the Angels. Anyone willing to pay $17m/year for the guy is crazy.

I like the way Ken thinks. Tex to the Red Sox would be a great way to replace Manny's bat.
