« Odds and Ends, Prospects Edition: Kendry Morales, Dayan Viciedo, Logan Morrison | Main | Odds And Ends: Saltalamacchia, White Sox, Ludwick »
According to Jon Paul Morosi, the Detroit Tigers are interested in Japanese pitcher Junichi Tazawa. Morosi lists the Red Sox, Mariners, Braves and Phillies as other potential suitors for the 22-year-old.
Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told Morosi that it's "too early to tell" whether the club will pursue Tazawa aggresively.
Though Morosi doesn't think the Tigers have a great chance of signing Tazawa, their chances of signing Japanese players have gone up since they hired Kevin Hooker to co-ordinate their Pacific Rim scouting.
Morosi also wonders whether the Tigers would part with Matt Joyce or Jeff Larish in a deal for J.J. Putz. Earlier this week, Morosi wrote that the Tigers would have to find bullpen help outside the organization.

where r all the Tigers fans?
Posted by: pskip13 | November 09, 2008 at 12:23 PM
I'm right here.
I'd personally rather see them sign Tazawa, since it doesn't mean giving up players to get him.
I'm not sure if I'm sold on trading for Putz because last year was pretty bad. However, if we don't have to give up any of our good players, then do it.

another fan right here...good to see a few here.
i think signing Juan Cruz is a cheaper and better option then both of these guys. Cruz was really good in arizona this year (trust me i live in AZ and watch the d-backs a bit)

another tiger fan here.
I agree with quantleaper. Cruz is a cheaper better option. i dont like the idea of gretting rid of Joyce nor do i like the idea of getting rid of larish

Yeah, Joyce could be a solid outfielder for years and I would never get rid of Larish. He's a power-hitting, left-handed 1B who can play a little bit of 3B and maybe LF in a pinch. I expect him to be on the 25 man roster for a while.

The Mariners would be dumb to sell Putz right now, since he's at the lowest his value could possibly go.
The Tigers have such a weak farm that we wouldn't get nearly anything back for him. Keep him, let him reprove himself until July, then trade him to the Mets, who will still be desperate for bullpen help.

Tigers fan here! First time poster also.
I personally would like the story of having Putz come back to his roots, but at the same time. i think that Larish and Joyce could very well be the future of 3rd and RF respectively. now if both Iorg and Worth pan out, then Iorg could play 3rd and worth could man short. that would make Larish available, but not for a few years. so for now, i'd say just sign someone like Cruz (who has electric stuff btw) and wait for Ryan Perry to win the job in '10.
god i can't wait for 2010. Porc and Perry will be ready for the bigs (rotation and closer, or at least set-up respectively), Iorg and worth will be ready if not by mid-season this year. and some of the other draft picks like satterwhite, darrow, green, crosby, and maybe hamilton will be ready for the bigs, or at least AAA work and ready to be called up for emergency work.
great times are acomin' Tigers Fans!!! just you wait.

OK. I'll chime in as the lone Mariner fan in this.
You guys have to remember that Putz was arguably the best closer in baseball in 2007. His 2008 was down due to a number of nagging, not serious injuries. He is a guy that needs to play continuously to keep his consistency. He missed the first part of the year because of a rib issue he tried to pitch through only making it worse. He then came back and started having some elbow soreness (most likely stemming from compensation because of the rib). It just was a bad year health wise for him.
Good news is that he has never had health problems in the past and seeing how all his injuries were minor, he should be back at full strength for 2009. I think it would be foolish for the Mariners to trade Putz this winter simply because his value is about as low as it will get right now and he could very well have another 2007 type year in '09. If he rolls into the All-Star break in peak form, the Mariners could get a heck of a lot more than a Larish/Joyce type player. Not putting those guys down but a top, experience, lock down closer is worth a pretty penny come the Trading Deadline.
I just think if the Mariners think J.J. is on his way to a healthy 2009, they would be stupid to take 50 cents on the dollar this winter for Putz.

Its funny, since I saw about every Mariner game this last year, I (and most in baseball) thought Putz had an awful year. The reason I guess is the fact he was injured off and on and blew 8 saves because the Mariners kept throwing him out there when he obviously had health problems. That said, he still put up a 3.88 ERA and struck out 56 hitters in 46 IP. By most standards that is a pretty solid reliever. Nice to see that Putz's off/injury plagued year was better than most relievers do at the peak of their game.

Personally I would like to keep Joyce, but I would agree to send Larish away for Putz. I was stoked when the Tigers drafted Larish, because I watched his 3-homer game as a Sun Devil in the college world series; however we have Miguel Cabrera locked up for years at his main position, and Inge is also going to be around for a few more years as well at third. I don't have enough fingers on one hand to count the amount of players the Tigers have that could play left field, now or in the future. Parting with Larish to get a closer better than Rodney? I'd do it in a heartbeat. And then sell that deadbeat for a crate of bananas.
Nobody else thinks Putz would be stoked to help make a team a contender, in the state he grew up in no less?
I say the Tigers should make the push.
Oh, and I am a diehard Tigers fan.
