| Boston Set To Sign Junichi Tazawa »
By Steve Adams [November 30, 2008 at 5:23pm CST]
Action this offseason will likely pick up with tomorrow's arbitration deadline, but let's take a look back at the week leading up to it:
- Early in the week we heard a false rumor that the Giants had signed Edgar Renteria to a two-year, $18MM contract. I didn't understand the signing at the time, and the fans seemed to share my sentiment based on the comments.
- The Pirates signed Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh, two finalists in India's Million Dollar Arm competition, to minor league contracts.
- The Angels emerged as players for C.C. Sabathia this week, although Mark Teixeira remains their top priority.
- We heard a couple different reports that the Red Sox are set to sign Japanese amateur Junichi Tazawa to a three-year, $6MM major league deal.
- Andy Pettitte may consider teams other than the Yankees, and is reportedly giving thought to the Dodgers. Ned Colletti confirmed that there is "some interest" in signing the veteran left-hander. My personal opinion, but I doubt Pettitte will be offered arbitration, and therefore won't cost any other teams a pick.
- A few minor moves: The Astros acquired Tyler Lumsden from Kansas City for cash considerations or player to be named later; The Brewers signed R.J. Swindle to a major league deal, and the Red Sox acquired Wes Littleton from the Rangers for cash considerations or a player to be named later as well.
- Here's a closer look at the Rule 5 Draft for those who want more information on it. The draft will be held on Dec. 7.

I believe that CC will end up signing NL team instead of AL team. AL teams have been hitting him hard while NL teams are still clueless, plus he's fully aware that AL teams that's going after him are in the competition with "Boston-Yankees-Angels-and Rays." These teams all hit him hard. Best guess, CC stay with brewers or go to LA dodgers.
Boston has a man who hits 30 homerun consistenly and that is Jason Bay. It's just that he doesn't show that big bat poise like other 30 homerun men. It'll be awesome if Boston can sign Tex, if not, I think Boston has a good lineup. They need someone who can get on base consistently more than someone who hits far.

Believe it's irrelevant because he will re-sign anyway, but I'd bet the Yankees offer arb to Pettitte.
A 1 year deal is not a problem for the Yankees, and with Sabathia taking his time and Burnett/Lowe/Sheets anything but guarantees, Pettitte would bring some (albeit overpriced) stability to the rotation.

prlly A or AA, they will prlly come up in 2010 or 2011, or just fall out and never be mentioned again!

Probably short-season rookie ball, or in an instructional league.

I don't understand why the Yankees wouldn't offer Pettitte arbitration. It's not like they can't afford him, and the way things are shaping up, they may need all the arms they can get. The other possibility for getting him back would be a one-year deal, which is essentially the same thing, and offering arbitration has the added benefit of a possible draft pick.
Same goes for Bobby Abreu. Some stuff that I've read seems unsure that they'll offer him arbitration, but it seems like a no-brainer to me.

No way either of those Indian guys manages to get to the majors by 2010 or 2011. Neither one has ever really even played baseball before, and they likely won't play in full season ball before 2010. These guys had never even left their home "towns" before coming to the US, so I would expect their development to take some time.

I hope the yanks dont offer Pettite arb, that might be the offseason highlight for the dodgers if they can sign him.

We must be watching different pitchers. Didn't this guy won the AL CY Young in 07? Now you say he can pitch in the AL.

people keep sayin sabathia bad first half last year was a huge sign that he couldnt pitch in the AL anymore
that makes no sense
18 starts 6 wins 8 losses 3 complete games 2 shutouts 123k's and 34 walks in 122 innings with a 3.83 with only 117 hits...thats pretty good considering its considered "bad" by people on here

Hawkeyes- That's because it's good, but not Cy Young good. Anyway, get rid of his first three starts or so when he was inexplicably horrible, and the numbers are even better.
That said, I think Sabathia had an even more dramatic improvement than most players do when they switch leagues. I wonder why that is, even though it's probably mostly coincidence.

Word is that Patel will be closing for the Pirates, while Singh will be the ace of the rotation.

Tim will be a very busy man starting next week

Next week's "week in review:
Furcal signs with the A's
Sabathia signs with the Giants
Texeria signs with the Nationals
Lowe signs with the Red Sox
The Nationals trade Nick Johnson and cash to the A's for Bobby Crosby
In a suprise, Manny Rameriez signs a 4 year deal with the Cubs
The Angels, Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees panic just leading up to the winter meetings and AJ Burnett, Kevin Towers and Scott Boras smile as they know the next few days are going to be very fun...
Posted by: Longing for Manny...Burriss that is!!! | November 30, 2008 at 08:49 PM
Jimmie....
I see Furcal going to the A's with that 3rd "mystery team" possibly being the cardinals or braves sneaking in and grabbing him
-Sabathia i dont think theres any question hes going to the yankees
-Tex will end resigning with the angels
-Lowe in my opinion will suprise everyone and sign with Texas
- the trade you mentione dis very plausible( as is everything you mentioned so far)
-The Manny comment made me laugh out loud....Manny will suprise everyone...because well face it hes Manny....I see him possibly signing with the yankees...or a suprise team...pure speculation right here ...but he signs with the Giants or Brewers if they dont sign C.C

Manny to the Mets would make me a smile. I know it is still unlikely, then again Omar loves him, but it makes PERFECT SENSE!
It drives me nuts because the Mets are never mentioned and I feel like they do not consider it, but wow hmmmm, a LF, a righty hitter, someone who single handedly would have won some games at the end of last year by driving in those elusive insurance runs, which we know the mets needed. Manny could hit 4, sandwiched between Wright and Beltran. Wright would have a load of pressure off of him. The met's main focus is working on pitching, but they also mention their weaker spots being, LF, 2B, C. If you get Manny to extend the lineup, you can live with a lack of offense from 2B and C.
Then sign K-Rod, look for economical bullpen help, and trade for Edwin Jackson or look at a reasonable FA starters.
Eh?
