« Cards Decline To Offer Arb To Springer, Looper, Isringhausen | Main | Braves Rumors: Hampton, Lowe, Burnett »
TUESDAY: A quote from GM Jack Zduriencik on Ibanez:
"It's a bonus to be able to get two picks if we don't sign him. But foremost, we'd like to have him come back to be a player for us this year."
It seems that if the Ms would really like Ibanez back, they'd offer him a reasonable multiyear deal.
MONDAY: According to Larry LaRue of the Tacoma News Tribune, the Mariners offered arbitration to outfielder Raul Ibanez. It was an easy decision, as at least ten clubs have interest in Ibanez and he's certain to decline the arb offer to sign a multiyear deal. As a Type A free agent, the Ms stand to gain two draft picks for him.
For some reason, only 56.5% of MLBTR readers expected Ibanez to be offered arbitration in our recent poll.

I'm shocked... just shocked that a completely guaranteed thing happened.
Well anyway, one has to admit the Mariners are sitting pretty for the next draft. Assuming Fields doesn't sign they have a guaranteed 5 picks between the first and second round and going under the assumption the Nats are too cheap to foot the bill for Strausberg, the M's could instantly have a farm that's a strength.

Good, now my dodgers wont sign him.

Smart move by the M's, even if he accepts they can turn around and deal him and get a descent return. No lose situation.

=========================
If your name stands true, they will sign him and surrender that tasty 17th overall pick to Seattle!!
Well that's every Mariner fan's hope right now anyway. ;)

When did Ned Colletti become a smart GM.
Smart move by the M's.
purple- The Nats not nabbing Strasburg would be a PR nightmare. Absolute nightmare.

God, I hope your right start wearing purple. 5 picks between the first & second rounds. Not to mention the strong possibility of Strasberg. Things are looking up in the PNW. :)

Oh man 4 picks that's like CRAZY! And with GMZ picking it looks like a cool future for the M's.

You know you are a Mariner fan when you are throwing out the "GMZ"!
I am really excited to see what Zduriencik can do with all the picks he's going to have. I saw a mock draft having us pick Alex White 2nd overall. I don't know if I'm digging that too much. I'm more for getting the best hitter available if Strasburg isn't there at #2.
It will definitely be the most exciting draft for the Mariners in the last 10+ years.

With all the new guys in the draft do people see the Mariners feeling the need to get a deal with Fields done ?
I know it was kind of a weird move picking a relief pitcher with their first round pick, but in hindsight, and with a new GM who's a scouting guy, do people see Fields as signing before the deadline, or going back in the draft ?

M's shouldn't sign Fields IMO. He's very close to the majors (he could probably pitch in the bigs in late 2009). And, the M's NEED guys with a higher upside, even if they're further away. That farm system svcks.

If I was Seattle I would just go after someone new with that pick.
Fields wasn't a great pick in the first place as he projects as a reliever and this team needs big time building blocks.
They have some potential ones in Hernandez, Clement, Morrow, Saunders, Triunfel, and Aumont, and they really need to just keep adding guys like that while continually building orgnizational depth as well.
Ibanez doesn't really help that cause either.

Now that Ibanez requires a team's first round pick and Abreu doesn't, why does it seem teams prefer the former?
For instance, the Cubs have stated repeatedly that they prefer Ibanez. Abreu though is two years younger and is projected to have a higher OBP and OPS by the Bill James and Marcel systems. Is this a defensive thing (I can't imagine either are going to be that great in Wrigley's right field) or something I'm just altogether missing?

"That farm system svcks. "
I wouldn't say it sucks. I would say that it isn't the best, because all of our high potential talent is in High-A basically, with the High Desert Mavs, or even in Wisconsin. Either way, our high potential 'spects are years away.
Also, I'm not against Jack Z, but did anybody else notice that his "extremely good draft picks" aren't exactly that good with a glove? I'm all for Jack Z, but I think this has to be looked at...

"5 picks between the first & second rounds. Not to mention the strong possibility of Strasberg. Things are looking up in the PNW. :)"
Just one thing you have to remember... price tag of those 5 picks. I believe Boras holds Strasberg's leash so a price tag between 6-8M will be likely (hell, I think I heard earlier posturing of Boras claiming 10M and a major league deal). Even if the next 4 picks are "low" bonus we're still talking about already an 10M-14M cost if all 5 sign, getting into already record breaking numbers for the amateur draft... and remember, there's another 48 rounds with a potential of 10 to 20 more signings! Of course that's also assuming the new guy (Z-something) is willing to break Selig's "suggested bonus guidelines." Don't get me wrong, it is the way baseball economics is shifting. Pay to develop a new kid is theoretically cheaper than signing a FA (Seriously, think of Longoria and what he could bring over the next 6 years versus what you'd have to pay a FA to bring similar expected results).
Anyway I'm rambling... point I'm trying to make, yes 5 picks is a very strong positive for Seattle's nearish future... just remember the new GM will be considering the price tag that goes with them.
