« Odds and Ends: Astros, Saito, Yankees | Main | Mets Considering Randy Wolf, Oliver Perez »
Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune has a quote from Padres CEO Sandy Alderson regarding Jake Peavy:
"It's likely Jake will be with us Opening Day. We said from the very beginning in connection with both of those possibilities that we would not make a trade unless it made baseball sense. We are no longer actively pursuing any trade for Jake, which is not to say someone won't approach us."

so i guess he wont be a cubbie? they will have one un-happy opening day starter..
Posted by: apaks | December 15, 2008 at 09:35 PM
Eh....I don't really buy this. Peavy is still out there. The Padres have been ordered to shed $30 million in payroll. Not dealing Peavy is like not winning Ohio. Without that scenario, it's almost impossible to accomplish your goal.

the pads that is. peavy dont wanna be there
Posted by: apaks | December 15, 2008 at 09:36 PM
Yea... he's not moving till next week when someone else asks about him. I'm going to go ahead and predict that the Yankees or Mets will go make a move at him. Although I dont think the mets get him w/o F-Mart being included in the deal. Same for Yankees with Phil Hughes, though most Yankees fans I know would happily give up Hughes and Kennedy for Peavy as Hughes still may need more time and Kennedy I'd pretty much call a flop with NL potential. In the AL East, he will never succeed.

lol i love the political reference..... i was a poly sci major
Posted by: apaks | December 15, 2008 at 09:37 PM
As a Braves fan, this makes me feel more at ease....oddly enough.
Posted by: bbxxj | December 15, 2008 at 09:37 PM
Not to mention Peavy would fill out a sick Yankees rotation and they have a little space left to eat some of his contract. I'd even argue with a healthy sabathia, peavy, burnett and wang... I don't think they'll need much on the hitting side.

As a dodger fan, This Sucks!
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | December 15, 2008 at 09:40 PM
This is good news.
Posted by: CardinalFaninIL | December 15, 2008 at 09:42 PM
Why does this suck ned? It's not like the Padres are going anywhere and Peavy will still be there pitching against the Dodgers' competitors as well.
Posted by: vtadave | December 15, 2008 at 09:44 PM
the mets should absolutely make a run at him. hell, so should the yankees
alderson leaves the door open. for sure.
Posted by: the_kid_01 | December 15, 2008 at 09:47 PM
A Dodgers-Padres deal would make sense, oddly enough
Posted by: gogopalehose | December 15, 2008 at 09:48 PM
For what it would take to get him, and the money hes going to make after the first season of his deal, he wont be worth it. His numbers wont be the same and hes very injury prone. Hes still a good pitcher and he strikes out a ton of guys, but hes not going to be the cy young ace outside of PETCO. Hes good, just not 2 or 3 top prospects good. At least he isnt outside of San Diego.
Posted by: chicubs25 | December 15, 2008 at 09:52 PM
Just as I have said all along.
Posted by: 123456789 | December 15, 2008 at 09:53 PM
I don't think the Mets have the prospects to land Peavy. Then again, that's what I was saying last year about Santana...

Original quote: "We are no longer actively pursuing any trade for Jake, which is not to say someone won't approach us."
Translation: "For the love of god, someone approach us about Peavy."

Red Sox get - Peavy
Padres get- Lowrie, Masterson, Delcarmen
Red Sox sign Furcal...done deal!
Posted by: Kulaid | December 15, 2008 at 10:10 PM
what do u guys think?
Posted by: Kulaid | December 15, 2008 at 10:12 PM
no peavy is a yankee in the waiting
Posted by: nyy | December 15, 2008 at 10:15 PM
why would peavy accept a trade to the mets when the yanks would have an incredible rotation with him
Posted by: nyy | December 15, 2008 at 10:17 PM
Kulaid, I think you've been drinking too much Kool-Aid. That is a horrible idea not grounded in fact whatsoever. The Sox will never give up those players for Peavy, and Peavy still has a "strong preference" for the senior circuit. Put those two together and you have a truly horrible idea. So congratulations if that was your intent.
Posted by: JL | December 15, 2008 at 10:24 PM
Because its the national league.
Posted by: chicubs25 | December 15, 2008 at 10:29 PM
The sox are trying to build a team through the farm, which is why they didnt go after Santana. Why would they trade for a much more risky pitcher in Peavy if they wouldnt go after Santana? And I doubt they want to give up 4 years to Furcal.
Posted by: chicubs25 | December 15, 2008 at 10:31 PM
"Red Sox get - Peavy
Padres get- Lowrie, Masterson, Delcarmen"
Towers would not go for that. *IF* Peavy would even allow a trade to Boston, talking a Bucholz, Masterson, Lowrie swap with Boston trying to keep Lars Anderson and jacoby Ellsbury out of it.
The 3 pitchers listed probably would not even satisfy Towers, taking on 2 unprovens and Masterson with 3/4 of a season of effective use, plus a stellar post season. No, Towers is no fool, Anderson would need to be included as well, hence just another reason why even IF he would allow himself to be traded to Boston, smarter to walk away, Boston has no need for the price..But it is nice knowing the Sox have the chips required to get him (or any other available player for that matter) isn't it?
Posted by: johns | December 15, 2008 at 10:46 PM
So the Braves are the mystery team in on Furcal. Could they be getting ready to try the Peavy deal again????????? Makes a lot of sense.
Posted by: MilwMatt | December 15, 2008 at 10:53 PM
He is just trying to keep negotiation power by pretending he will hang on to Peavy. Good luck
Posted by: Sethera | December 16, 2008 at 01:06 AM
Definitely allows Towers to negotiate with teams with at least some semblance of leverage at least.
Posted by: reprisal | December 16, 2008 at 01:43 AM
"Hes good, just not 2 or 3 top prospects good. At least he isnt outside of San Diego."
Go ask LA fans what they think about that. He's better than any pitcher Chicago has. And he's got a trophy to prove it.
I hope he stays. I also know the other 6 SD fans who will be there on Opening Day in Petco will be happy to see him back. :-) It's going to be a tough year, but he's basically the only guy who will fill the stadium in 09.
I do think SD is serious about keeping him though, if Towers doesn't get an offer he likes. 09 is written off anyways. Giving players away just doesn't set a good precedent.
Posted by: tomfromsd | December 16, 2008 at 03:01 AM
Did someone seriously suggest Peavy for Lowrie/Masterson/Delcarmen?
Did you not see the players that Towers wanted? Why would he want two relievers(red sox fans, don't kid yourself into thinking two pitch Masterson is a starter) and a decent SS/good 2b?
Posted by: Steve Howe's ghost | December 16, 2008 at 04:44 AM
Is it me, or does Kevin Towers remind you guys of that kid who tok his ball and went home crying?
Posted by: tolo316 | December 16, 2008 at 05:54 AM
Peavy fears the American league and the AL East even worse.
Posted by: Qabalist | December 16, 2008 at 06:36 AM
For selfish reason's I'd like to see Peavy traded. he's one of my fantasy league pitchers and I'd like to see him on a team that wins more :)
Posted by: kerelcooper | December 16, 2008 at 07:07 AM
"Peavy fears the American league and the AL East even worse."
Which is why 2 of the 3 AL teams he agree to are in the AL East, right? That makes sense. Clearly, he's petrified.
Posted by: tomfromsd | December 16, 2008 at 07:23 AM
he'd, not he
Posted by: tomfromsd | December 16, 2008 at 07:24 AM
With the Teixeira signing, I think things will start moving, for Peavy. Dont count the Red Sox out.
Beckett
Peavy
Lester
Dic-K
Really looks good, but again it only looks good.

Teixeira signing? I wouldn't count your chickens before they hatch on that one.
Posted by: Pat Kelly | December 16, 2008 at 08:10 AM
It would take Masterson and what you use to have in Hansen and Moss.
Posted by: Tomahawk368 | December 16, 2008 at 10:11 AM
With the signing of furcal.
The braves will probably try to get peavy again. But Wren says that he wont tal tothe pads unless the braves start the talks, but i dont believe it, if the braves dont sign 2 mid tier starters, like sheets(GREAT picture, when healthy) and perez
