« Derek Lowe Rumors: Tuesday | Main | Pirates Rumors: Eckstein, Wilson, Turnbow »
5:26pm: WEEI's Alex Speier says that while the Red Sox touched base with Pettitte's agent, there's almost no chance they sign him. They also have not had meaningful dialogue for Ben Sheets.
8:30am: Add Carl Pavano and Brad Penny to the starting pitchers under consideration for Boston, according to Nick Cafardo. He says the Marlins are the favorite for Pavano, and the Yankees are still in it. We learned yesterday that the Blue Jays have interest.
12:36am: According to Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox expressed interest in free agent lefty Andy Pettitte. Could Pettitte cross enemy lines in 2009? For now Massarotti says the Red Sox have simply kicked the tires, as they seem to do with most interesting free agents.

Would this be worse than Clemens becoming a Yankee?
Posted by: tolo316 | December 09, 2008 at 12:39 AM
Pettitte in Boston, Lowe in New York -- Boy that'd be a fun little match-up.
Posted by: ksesxe | December 09, 2008 at 12:40 AM
man that would be sticking it to the Yankees but Damon did the same thing to the Sox a couple years ago.
Posted by: Sam | December 09, 2008 at 12:40 AM
lol this would be awkward for new york and awesome for the sox because it takes pressure off signing a big name now
Posted by: 04Forever | December 09, 2008 at 12:42 AM
he would be a good lefty mentor to lester

Yikes, this guy has almost nothing left in the tank, unlike when they signed Colon last year. Was hoping for a Brad Penny for the 6th starter type, not this kind of guy.

It wouldn't make me up the offer if I'm the Yankees.
Posted by: Rich | December 09, 2008 at 12:48 AM
The Red Sox can't really be interested in Pettitte. They just want to add to the rivalry. It's the same reason why Manny Ramirez has said he wants to go to New York: to be a part of the rivalry from the other perspective.

I'd be amazed if Pettitte went to Boston. Back in '03 Boston offered him far more than the Astros or Yankees did, and he didn't even consider it. They offered 4/$48 while the Yankees and Astros were in the 3/$30 range.
johns - Pettitte's got plenty left. He was pitching the last few months hurt with a similar injury to what Joba had. Due to the amount of injuries the team had, both he and the team decided it was better for him to pitch through it.
Even with bad finish, he still ended up league average. Also, the stats like BABIP, strikeout rate, groundball/flyball, etc suggest that he pitched better than last season but was extremely unlucky.

I can't see it happening..I just don't see Pettitte going to Boston...Boston is just trying to pressure the Yanks into rushing and signing him..

This is what the Red Sox do, kick tyres on people.
CC, Pettite, Lowe, Burnett.. they might sign one, most likely 0.
Years before they have talked to Zito.. not going anyway.

Not happening, he's already refused to pitch for the Sox in the past, and he's already stated this year it's basically NY or retired
Posted by: mike923 | December 09, 2008 at 02:19 AM
Correction- NY or retired and maybe LA or Houston
Posted by: mike923 | December 09, 2008 at 02:26 AM
Can't compared Damon with Pettitte. Damon didn't come up with the Red Soxs, like Pettitte did with the Yanks
Posted by: DominicanYanks | December 09, 2008 at 08:36 AM
Pettite would be absolutely killing his Yankee image and fan support. Plus I can't see Boston offering more than what the Yanks have so far (10 mil). Why would Pettite do that?
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | December 09, 2008 at 08:36 AM
In '03 Pettitte spurned the Yankees for Houston because he didn't like the way the Yanks front office was treating him. The Sox offered 4yrs/$52 million, he felt unwanted in NY and was surprised that Boston treated him better, so he left town for Houston.
If the Yanks hurt Pettitte's feelings again, he'll leave. In '03, the Boston front office was new and unproven. Now they've got 2 W.S. Championships. That could change his mind, and keep Boston in play.

pavano owes it to the yankees to go and suck up the joint in boston for a good year or two. its only fair. maybe get a hangnail or something and be on the 60 day DL.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 09, 2008 at 08:43 AM
I'd agree that he'd be killing the Yankee fanbase, but I think the last time he signed a deal was quite a bit different than this time. He had suitors lining up and had to choose from them, this time he's basically having to go out and seek out teams.
I think if he thinks New York is slighting him (not what I think, but what he might) that a Boston signing could be a reality.

Pettite will be back with the Yankees. The Sox and Pettite are just using each other. The Sox want the Yanks to overpay for him and Pettite wants his money.
I have a feeling someone is going to get Brad Penny at a great price. I think he offers a much better return than Carl Pavano.

Brad Penny on a 1yr incentive laden contract is a much better risk for the Red Sox then most guys.
Sox don't really need much pitching so if they can scoop up a deal on a heavy incentive laden contract then I think its a solid low risk fit.
Penny's $9million option was declined by a team that has holes at pitching, so he should know his value is south of this.
I like a 1yr deal with $4 million guranteed and another $4 in possible incentives.
This gives the Sox 7 arms capable of pitching with 3 top of the line starters and 4 back end guys of which 2 could easily be some of the better #4/5 guys in the game.
Beckett
Lester
Matsuzaka
Wakefield
Buchholz
Masterson
Penny

Jon Lester at 24 is already in the discussion for top LHP in baseball. He doesn't need any more mentors.
