Rangers Could Still Trade Another Catcher

3:58pm: Both Peter Gammons and Ken Rosenthal are saying the Rangers could still trade another catcher (for a young starter).  Gammons cites Salty specifically.

10:48am: WEEI's Alex Speier takes a look at the market for catching.

  • Dodgers GM Ned Colletti is on record saying he's "probably not" interested in Jason Varitek.
  • The Red Sox, Reds, Marlins, and Astros continue to hunt for catching.
  • Speier talked to an official who believes the Rangers would have to be overwhelmed to trade a second catcher.  Keeping in mind that Max Ramirez may have to move out from behind the plate, it may make sense to just let Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Taylor Teagarden compete for the job.
  • The Red Sox have talked to the Indians about Kelly Shoppach; the Reds like him as well.  The Indians would want a big league second baseman, third baseman, or closer back for Shoppach.  The Indians have not entertained offers for Victor Martinez.
  • The D'Backs would like a second baseman or pitching for Miguel Montero or Chris Snyder.

Whither Ramon Hernandez?

Looks like, if the Sox don't want to give Varitek 2 years, are going to end up having to trade Lowrie+ for Shoppach...and settle with Lugo as SS for the next two years.

I hope the White Sox snatch up Eliezer Alfonso(minor league free agent) to compete with Cole Armstrong for the backup catcher spot.

That or Paul Lo Duca.

Or trade Lowrie for Shoppach, then turn around and sign Furcal.

Dodgers "probably aren't" interested in Varitek? Uh...Russell Martin?

If the Red Sox sign Teixeira, would some deal involving Lowell for Shoppach make sense?

"If the Red Sox sign Teixeira, would some deal involving Lowell for Shoppach make sense?"

Try to think of it from the Indians' point of view. Why would they trade their catcher for a guy who is on the wrong side of 33 and isn't even healthy? Even if the Sox eat all of Lowell's salary, it's a terrible deal for Cleveland.

Maybe Lowell and Masterson, with the Sox eating almost all of Lowell's salary. It wouldn't exactly give Cleveland their closer, but they'd get Lowell for very cheap and a good bullpen option.

vtadave- there were rumors the Dodgers might move Martin to 3B. Coletti is "probably not interested" is probably a sign that they don't want to do that and rightfully so.

With the big three young Sox pitchers; Justin Masterson, Michael Bowden and Clay Buchholz, I can't see them trading Masterson (within reason of course).

He's already proven himself in big spots and he can start or setup Pap.

Regardless, if it takes that much to get Shoppach, or any other decent catcher in a trade, I'd rather the Sox sign a JAG or two to fill the catcher vacancy for next year.

If it takes that much to get Kelly Shoppach . Andrew ill think ill pass

Exactly. I think the Sox may be stuck with two options: give Varitek what he wants, or punt the catcher position for 2009, and hopefully try again next year. Not a great position to be in.

Of course you do Andrew.

Never mind the fact the Sox have plenty of prospects and plenty of potential catchers available. Salty and Shoppach may not even be the most appealing options...

have scouts soured on michael bowden? i can see why people would rather hold out for one of the other 2 sox pitchers, but last i heard bowden had pretty good stuff. and he had a pretty good debut in a spot start last season

i have a feeling some team is gonna say ehh screw it, and take bowden as a consolation prize. then he'll wind up turning into a stud

Oh, I forgot. The almighty, dynastiest of dynasty, smartiest of smart, amazingest of amazing Red Sox are never in a bad position, nor is it ever possible for them to be in one. My apologies to the keeper of the torch.

The facts are that Texas needs to be blown away (think at least Buchholz, and only to start with) to deal another one of their young, promising catchers, and Cleveland needs a significant haul to deal their catcher to the Sox.

I repeat: the Sox are not in a good position.

"Exactly. I think the Sox may be stuck with two options: give Varitek what he wants, or punt the catcher position for 2009, and hopefully try again next year. Not a great position to be in."

I don't know about the position they're in being that bad, they'll be hard pressed to get LESS production at the plate even if they punt the catching position. And it's not like Tek is all that great defensively.

To me, pitching depth > a starting catcher.

Andrew,
Relax...

Tek doesn't really have many other options outside of Boston and there are plenty of teams with a suitable band-aid catcher available.

Sox are in a fine position because they have young, cost controlled pitching depth they can deal.

The Rangers dealt Laird for below average arms and you have to believe they made the Sox aware of what Detroit was giving up to see if they would top it;the Sox didn't top the low offering of Detroit because they aren't desperate.

Kevin Cash is capable of hitting just as bad as Tek and he actually plays better defense so no one in the Sox F.O is worried right now.

If the Sox sign Teixeira then Lowell + $$ for Shoppach makes sense for both sides.

Lowrie can also be dealt in a pinch without the acquisition of Teixeira.

Buchholz is projected to be the #5 guy right now so he can also be moved and the Sox can sign a Free Agent pitcher.

I guess what you don't understand about the Sox being in a "good" position is they have a variety of avenues they can go down to fill their catching need. Most teams generally only have a few options to make moves but with the shape the Sox roster is currently in, a catcher is their only "need" and they have plenty of extra, desirable guys they can deal for that need.

Roch, Kubatko is reporting that the Astros and Dodgers are looking at Ramon Hernandez as a option. The Os would get a Utility Man type who can play OF and INF.

Just another outside the box idea (more to show that the Sox are not in a bad position given their flexibility to move various players / eat bad contracts)

Miguel Montero / Eric Byrnes for Julio Lugo + $4 Milliom.

D-backs get a 2B and move Byrnes terrible contract.

Sox get a young catcher with 20+HR power and get a Right-Handed OF capable of playing CF for their 4th OF hole.

If this doesn't work, I still like the Sox matching up for Montero as Josh Byrnes/Theo obviously have a solid working relationship.

basemonkey,
I think you are correct that other teams are looking at Ramon Hernandez. The O's have made it pretty obvious they would like to move him.

Personally, I like him as part of a 3 team deal for Peavy.

The Padres are looking for a Veteran catcher and the Cubs are willing to move Ronny Cedeno.

If the O's get Cedeno, the Padres get Hernandez and the Cubs eat some of the money owed to Hernandez in the process then I could see him as part of the Peavy deal.

Otherwise, the only hang up with Hernandez is the O's would be best served (contractually) keeping Weiters in AAA for the first month+ to hold back his arbitration/Free agency by an extra year. The O's are gonna stink next year though so I doubt they are too worried about finding a fill in catcher for a month or so.

No way the Astros look for a catcher that is top tier. They want Q or Towles in there in 2010

Masterson for Shoppach anyone? Maybe the Ramon Ramirez deal set this up

gammons might as well and came out and said that he is talking about the red sox, i mean we all know he is since thats the only other team with a young starter texas wants (buchholz), and we need a good catcher

Let's go Red Sox get Teagarden. Honestly he has to have one of the best names ever except Milton Bradley and Coco Crisp which isn't his real name.

I really think the O's should wait till the trade deadline to trade Ramon Hernandez. Simple. As KangarooBoxer said, the Wieters situation. Keeping him in AAA for the first month or so of the season to stall his FA by an extra year is really good for the team in the long run. There is no need to rush Wieters. None whatsoever.

"Miguel Montero / Eric Byrnes for Julio Lugo + $4 Milliom."

I like that idea, actually. Although, now the Diamondbacks need a catcher..

I really think the Rangers should trade Salty, as opposed to Teagarden or Ramirez. Both Salty and Ramirez are questionable on defense, however, Ramirez is better with the bat. Teagarden should stay, period.

"Masterson for Shoppach anyone? Maybe the Ramon Ramirez deal set this up"

Shoppach will cost more than Masterson. You have to put together multiple good prospects. Young, cost controlled catchers are not abundant.

According to Extra Bases, Steve Phillips is reporting that the Tigers are close to acquiring Julio Lugo (it is a tiny blurb).

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2008/12/catching_fallou.html

This article says Salty was catching a knuckleball so it could be they were testing him in anticipation of a deal with the Sox. Just a thought.

Boston never should have given up Shoppach in the first place, but a deal involving Masterson and Lugo plus cash may get him back to Boston..

I thought the Tigers signed Everrett.. Given Lugo is better, I don't think they would get both of them..

Soxcurse - The article says the Tigers are close to getting Adam Everett, not Julio Lugo!

Former Mets GM Steve Phillips is reporting that the Tigers appear close to a deal for shortstop Adam Everett, which could have some ramifications for the Sox. Detroit was in the market for a shortstop and was, at one point, a potential place for Julio Lugo to land. Everett, who played 48 games during an injury-plagued season with the Twins in '08, is excellent defensively but is a limited offensive player. Maybe the Tigers are hoping he could have the kind of impact for them that Jason Bartlett had for the Rays. After all, the Tigers have the offense to carry Everett.

cmac, thanks for correcting me, but I would bet my house that it said Lugo. Eh maybe I'm hoping too much.

Quade -- Agree with you 100% about the Sox making a big mistake in giving up Shoppach. I wonder if they ever asked him to catch a knuckleball when he was in the minors. I'd love to see him make a return, but fear how much it will take to get him back. As long as we don't need to bring back Andy Marte as part of the swap, it's OK.

Wow, guess I didn't know both Salty and Shoppach strike out at Cust/Howard like rates.

Boston fans want Shoppach more ? Tough call.

I can't believe he didn't mention the possibility of the Red Sox acquiring Russell Martin for Julio Lugo. If Gammons could have an erection it would be for Martin.

"Quade -- Agree with you 100% about the Sox making a big mistake in giving up Shoppach. I wonder if they ever asked him to catch a knuckleball when he was in the minors."

I am sure he did more than a few times,29 year old Knuckleballer Charlie Zink has been in the Sox farm system seemingly since the 1st wagons went westward.

Here is what I'm hearing could get Boston Shoppach from Cleveland sources.
Masterson / Lowrie and a low A type infielder or pitcher with upside ( doesn't have to be a top prospect type )
The rumors here about Cincy is the young 3rd baseman E Encarnacion or maybe bring Phillips back in some type of Shoppach deal.
The Indians currently have Peralta plain everyday in winterball and he has played very well 2 errors in the last 15 games . So they have how pretty much deided to focus on a defensive 2nd baseman or proven young closer type in a Shoppach deal .

melonis rex: "Shoppach will cost more than Masterson. You have to put together multiple good prospects. Young, cost controlled catchers are not abundant."

Masterson will cost more than Shoppach. You'd have to throw in another prospect. Young, cost controlled pitchers who can start and set up and have non-choking playoff experience are nearly impossible to find.

I would not give up Bucholz or Masterson for anything less than Russell Martin. Bucholz has #1 potential and Masterson is the second coming of Derek Lowe (without the baggage).

Thank you Little Bear. I'm 100% with you. If teams would like to talk about Michael Bowden and maybe more, then we can talk. But for me, Buchholz and Masterson should be off the table.

We had a TERRIBLE offensive catcher last year. It isn't going to be that difficult to find someone as inept with the bat as Tek was last year. I'd rather sign Pudge than sell low on Buchholz or give up a valuable piece such as Masterson.
