« Mariners Sign Tyler Walker | Main | Yankees Sign Angel Berroa »
6:50pm: Mike Puma of the New York Post says the deal is for one-year at $4.5MM with a $5MM club option ($1MM buyout) for 2010. The physical is scheduled for tomorrow.
5:50pm: Ken Rosenthal wrote earlier today that the the A's have reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year contract with Giambi and the deal is at the finish line, pending a physical.
TUESDAY, 9:54am: Olney says Giambi is on the verge of agreeing to a deal with the A's worth $6.5MM guaranteed - $5.25MM in '09 plus a $4MM 2010 option with a $1.25MM buyout. Quite affordable!
In an article posted several hours ago, Susan Slusser wrote:
A team source said Monday that the A's are moving toward completing a deal...A major-league source said there's widespread belief that a package already is in place and that an announcement could be imminent.
Slusser says the A's could still add another free agent if the price is right, but Mark Mulder is just a "vague possibility."
MONDAY, 3:38pm: According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the A's have made significant progress in their talks with Jason Giambi. He says a deal appears imminent. Mychael Urban heard today that the A's could sign Giambi this week, possibly for one year with an option.

There never were any runners at 2nd or 3rd for Cust last year, so I dont know what youre talking about.
God the offense was such a shambles in 08....luckily Holliday+G-Man are here to heat it up in 09!
Posted by: PL | January 06, 2009 at 06:18 PM
Chris Carter has the most raw power I have ever seen.. But he played 3rd for a good portion of the year and is bad, really bad.. So he he will play first or DH.. But hes at least 2 years away
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | January 06, 2009 at 06:25 PM
You're right there wasn't a lot of runners last year but when there was, Cust struck out or he walked and Crosby left them on.
Bottom line they should be better with Holliday and Giambi.
I still would like one more hitter and one more veteren starter and then I'll be happy.

Great signing by the A's. Giambi and Burrell are the steals of the 08 off-season.
As good as Tex is, the Yanks have to be scratching their head a bit. Giambi is signed to 1/4th of the annual cost of Tex. Tex is better, no question - but is he really 4x's better? Not even close.
Finally, this doesn't tip the scales enough yet to favor the A's. However, the Angels better do something. They need Dunn.
Posted by: bjsguess | January 06, 2009 at 07:07 PM
Wow if I'm a Rays or A's fan I'd be super stocked with acquiring a couple of big free agents on the cheap. Talk about absolutely steals by both teams. So my take on Abreu is that he will come between the 4 and 8 million dollars right? Or at least no higher than 10 million max.
Posted by: Franco | January 06, 2009 at 07:22 PM
The Angels might be the most over-rated franchise in MLB, top to bottom. The way they talked about their farm system a few years ago was almost Mets-like.
Sure they won 100 games last year, but they played in a div against 3 teams that were either rebuilding (Tex) gave up halfway through (A's) or were just an abomination (M's).
When you play tons of games against teams like that in a lopsided schedule, coupled with a pathetic pythag W-L (what was it, 86 wins?), the Angels have no right to claim to be the team to beat the West. If they sign no one, its absolutely even with Oakland, with Texas right there.

Cust, Holliday, and Giambi are each hitting 80 homers next year... you guys all are going to look stupid when i'm right
Posted by: jmA'sfan | January 06, 2009 at 07:42 PM
great signing for the price. I didnt expect him to come nearly this cheap.
i'd like a veteran SP and maybe another bat.
I wouldn't be suprised if beane goes after dunn, he's a high OPS guy
Posted by: Trust in Beane | January 06, 2009 at 07:43 PM
but in all seriousness, we still do need a shortstop, and for the pitching staff to stay both healthy and consistent...
Posted by: jmA'sfan | January 06, 2009 at 07:45 PM
I say give Crosby 1 more chance and save our money and go after a veteran SP we need pitching. And if we still have money after that go after Bobby Abreu
Posted by: Briggs | January 06, 2009 at 07:52 PM
or dunn
Posted by: Briggs | January 06, 2009 at 07:53 PM
I say the pitcher we should try and get should be Sheets, Lowe, or Oliver Perez
Posted by: Briggs | January 06, 2009 at 07:55 PM
wow awful signing for the A's. I know the 30 dingers and 90 rbi's might suggest he is a productive player but A's fans will be cursing his name come summer time every time he grounds out to right field.
Posted by: yanks09 | January 06, 2009 at 08:03 PM
Awful signing, eh? Awful would be investing ten million per for three years, like he was originally asking for. At the price the A's got him for, it is a great signing.
I will likely be on the wrong side of the agreement scale here, but I don't think Barton needs time in AAA, unless he is terrible in spring. Sure, more seasoning in the minors could help, but wouldn't being mentored by an MVP help more?
I see it more like this, Barton starts twice a week at first, Giambi starts the other four or five games. When Barton is starting, Giambi goes to DH, Cust goes to right, and Buck/Cunningham sits. This could be explained easier by having a dominant ground ball pitcher starting, then Giambi DH, and and Cust in the OF makes more sense.
Plus, whenever Giambi starts at first, Barton will replace him after Giambi's third at bat for defensive purposes.
Giambi and Barton, BFF.

"wow awful signing for the A's. I know the 30 dingers and 90 rbi's might suggest he is a productive player but A's fans will be cursing his name come summer time every time he grounds out to right field."
All hitters make outs over half the time they're at the plate. I will take Giambi's .373 OBP any day.
Even the first baseman your team just signed to replace Giambi.

Know ID yuh-
Barton should be a full time starter. Not starting 2-3 days a week. Just the best for development if he's starting full time in AAA over starting 2-3 times a week in the bigs.
If/when Buck gets hurt, the shift would be Holliday to RF, Cust goes to LF, Giambi goes to DH, and Barton goes to 1B. Cunningham starts full time in AAA.

"I say the pitcher we should try and get should be Sheets, Lowe, or Oliver Perez"
Lowe and Ollie will require too many years for the A's situation.
A's only really need a FA SP for '09 and maybe '10, no need to give Lowe/Perez a 3-4 year deal.
So I really really like Sheets.
Posted by: melonis rex | January 06, 2009 at 08:39 PM
Off the subject, but I also don't think the A's need another starting pitcher to be a contender. I know it might help, but come spring training, there will truly be a battle for rotation spots, and the best pitchers will win, no matter what has happened in the past. Eveland and Smith were not projected in the rotation last year, correct?
Gio obviously ran out of gas at the same time he got called up, I don't think it would be impossible for him to open the season as the 4th or 5th starter, if he has a great spring. He did dominate (and I mean DOMINATE) AAA for a month.
Posted by: Know ID yuh | January 06, 2009 at 08:44 PM
And Rex, I know stating Barton would be better off part time would be unpopular, I agree, he needs at bats. But he has had a full year in the big leagues, most players who are lucky enough to claim that don't regress back to the minors when they are still highly touted. I think this is a rare situation in which a player might develope more being mentored by someone who has made hundreds of millions. Plus, Giambi could at least point him in the right direction to bulking up. I don't see any way Barton benefits more being in the minors and getting more at bats. He should still get 350 at bats in this situation, maybe more if he turns into the hulk, like Giambi did when he was Barton's age.
Posted by: Know ID yuh | January 06, 2009 at 08:52 PM
I do agree that the best pitchers will win. I think that competition should be between Eveland, Braden, and Outman, and maybe Gonzalez. I think the A's are contenders right now, but a Sheets type would push them over the edge.
Gio's walk rates in AAA this year were also very high(4.46 BB/9), which is why I'm really adamant about Gio starting at AAA. If you want a comparison, that's about an entire batter more per 9 innings greater than Zito walked on average while in Oaktown, and he was always near the tops in AL in walks. One month of AAA dominance isn't enough.

From oaklandathletics.com:
"Confirming details reported earlier, the Post pegged Giambi's 2009 salary at $3.5 million, with the $5 million option for next season carrying a $1 million buyout."
Billy Beane has done it again.
Posted by: jolstad | January 06, 2009 at 09:19 PM
Heck yeah they should go after Dunn now. Man, seeing that team run would make me feel young again. And...what's the record for most team K's in a season?
Seriously, the A's know how to be fun, always do. And thankfully Giambi can grow hair again. He and Damon looked like dweebs in NY.
Posted by: paxterj | January 06, 2009 at 09:24 PM
Agreed, looking purely at his numbers, you would have to say, Ronny James Gio is not ready. But one thing about him is that he was known for having dominate games, and getting blown out in others, so I am not sure his overall stats really mean much. The dominate phase I mentioned was something like back to back one hitters with 18Ks and 3BB. I know I am wrong, but it was impressive.
Looking back on Ronny James before last year, it was a conceivable conclusion that he would be in the 09 rotation, the only reason that is no longer a rumor is because he literally was terrible in his late season call up. Actually, more than terrible. I think a good spring lands him a rotation spot, as does it for Anderson.
Posted by: Know ID yuh | January 06, 2009 at 09:30 PM
the A's are quietly better while the Angels are doing nothing.
Posted by: bkoke | January 06, 2009 at 09:44 PM
So Gio's pretty much pitching like Daniel Cabrera. When he's on, he's on, but when he's not, bombs away. And he walks a lot of batters. Since Gio's ceiling is much higher than DCab, I'd like him in AAA a little more.
I despise Dio.
Posted by: melonis rex | January 06, 2009 at 10:15 PM
The first Dio record was good, after that not so good
Posted by: Thez316 | January 06, 2009 at 10:50 PM
Now all we need is for Billy to pull the trigger and trade Crosby for Miguel Tejada and sign Bobby Abreu. The lineup will be stacked and the Angels will be playing golf in October.
Posted by: jolstad | January 06, 2009 at 11:23 PM
No. Agreed on Tejada maybe, if its possible, but not on Abreu.
And no trading anything of value for Tejada. Pure salary dump. I still am not sure I want him, even if its Crosby for Tejada.
Get me my pitcher please. Ben Sheets now.
Posted by: melonis rex | January 06, 2009 at 11:41 PM
What would you be willing give up for Miguel Tejeda?
Bobby Crosby is a given. Maybe 1 minor league pitcher?
Why so down on Abreu? Definite upgrade over Buck/Cunningham. Abreu's market price is pretty low right now. There should be enough money to make a run at Sheets. Don't forget a Mulder return is not too far fetched.

Hahaha
Nice

Gio is like a oliver perez to me instead of daniel cabrera, great stuff but no control and should start in AAA, i agree wit you rex that sheets would be great but i just dont see them spending the money to get him. Also why cant Ryan Sweeney bat 2nd? I'm a big fan of him and why go get another outfielder in abreu and leave tejeda ass in houston, the astros would want good players in return for him...they would be fools not to. Also in reference to the Angels they are the division champs so they are still the team to beat, I would worry more about Texas than the Angels because we know that overall the angels have declined but still a great team. Any clue who replaces tex at 1b for them? cause they basically gave kotchman away with no replacement..
Posted by: atheleticsNbraves | January 07, 2009 at 01:13 AM
i wish him well back with the a's i see him hitting 240 with 30 homer 90 rbi the a's lineup got more pop then the angels
Posted by: patrick | January 07, 2009 at 09:03 PM
wow 4.5? big paycut.Great deal for the A's
Posted by: DominicanYanks | January 07, 2009 at 11:20 PM
From a Yankees Fan, thanks Giambino I loved watching you play in the pinstripes, have a great year (except against the Bombers) you will be missed.
