5:07pm: According to Mike DiGiovanna and Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times, Adenhart and friends Courtney Stewart and Henry Pearson were killed. The fourth friend, Jon Wilhite, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
3:12pm: Yahoo's Tim Brown and Kevin Kaduk have reactions to the Adenhart tragedy. Baseball America profiles his career, and also has a statement from Angels GM Tony Reagins. MLB.com's Lyle Spencer also has a nice tribute.
10:16am: Awful news today. TMZ reports that Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident early this morning. Two others (one affiliated with the Angels organization) were killed in the crash, and the offender was caught and hospitalized. The 22 year-old had just tossed six scoreless innings the night before, the best performance of his young career.
NBC Los Angeles and the L.A. Times have more on the story.

Perhaps the most moving story I have heard in many, many months. To his family and friends go my best wishes to find solace in such a tragedy. To the Angels fans, I'm sorry to hear of the loss of such a promising young ball player. This is indeed a terrible event...
Posted by: gadamer | April 09, 2009 at 10:23 AM
TMZ's site also said that one of the other men killed in the accident was associated with the Angels organization.... I wonder who it could be?
Posted by: Ink&Paper | April 09, 2009 at 10:23 AM
Whoa I was just watching the game last night on tv and this happens. This is so sad.
Posted by: Selwonk | April 09, 2009 at 10:23 AM
That's devastating to an organization. I feel for the Angels organization and the entire family to Adenhart.

My previous message is not showing...
He threw a good game last night too...
That's always terrible to hear someone was just MURDERED by a hit-and-run driver. Hopefully they catch this fella and toss him in jail... My condolences to his family and friends.

Wow ...
Just absolutely awful news. The poor kid and his family.
As an Angels fan I had high hopes for Adenhart. But honestly, right now, baseball seems very unimportant at this moment.
Posted by: bjsguess | April 09, 2009 at 10:31 AM
In the early 1990's, my car was totalled by a hit and run driver and I had to sue my own insurance company to pay for my injuries (because the offender was never caught.
At least in this instance it sounds like the Police caught the scumbag who did this. If so, I hope the judge throws the book at him and he spends MANY years in jail.

This is really sad news. Condolences to Adenhart his family and the Angels organization.

the washington post reports that one of the other three killed in the accident was affiliated with the ball club as well.
what a tragedy, a 22 year old phenom with so much promise, killed just after he tosses the game of his life...

My prayers are with the Adenhart family and the Angels organization. This is the worst news a parent could receive. This could really set the players on the team back a bit. I'm not sure how they could get over this tragedy any time soon. I am glad they caught the person who caused this unthinkable action.

This is horrible. As a Brave fan, I never heard of Adenhart until we were trying to get him in the Tex deal. After watching his videos and stats, the guy had amazing stuff. I was upset when we did not get the young stud. It is a very sad day for the family and Angels organization. The Braves Nation is thinking about you.

Dude this is harsh. I cannot believe this. RIP Nick Adenhart. I dont want to sound bitter, but whoever decided to just leave the scene needs to be stabbed. End of story.

Doesn't it just always seem to work out this way? A couple of guys, minding their own business, not harming anyone, get killed in a car wreck while the scumbag who caused it walks away without a scratch? Hopefully he gets a little poetic justice. Like maybe when he gets sentenced and sent away for a long, long time his cellmate turns out to be a huge Angels fan who makes their time together a living hell for him.

When I first saw this, I checked on the Angels website and ESPN but couldn't find any mention of it.. I was really hoping it was a bogus report. Unfortunately, I just saw it on ESPN.
Posted by: GoTribe | April 09, 2009 at 10:54 AM
I was at the game last night. I told my dad after the Adenhart was taken out of the game that he wasn't going to get sent back to AAA. He was set in the rotation already. Good pitching performance by Adenhart.
And then I wake up see this story in the local news...just so sad. I had a chance to meet that him last year. So friendly. Fans loved him here in Anaheim. Adenhart was going to be REALLY good. We'll never get to see that now. :(
RIP Nick Adenhart

http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=ana
This is absolutely awful. Even if the guy was just some dude who never threw a baseball in his life, it is never right for a 22 year old to die, especially like this.
Adenhart was a hell of a talent and looked like he was putting it all together. What a terrible loss for all involved. My condolences to his friends, family and the Angels Organization.
Posted by: AA | April 09, 2009 at 10:59 AM
This is really awful. Adenhart was making some serious strides as a pitcher, and he's only 22.
As awful as this is for the Angels' baseball team, the idea of any person that young losing their life is pretty brutal.
This is truly a sad day for the Angels and baseball as a whole.
Let's hope that this is worst news we hear about this season.

This is terrible! They announce Adenhart's name but because the other guy wasn't a star or future star (presumably) no one cares about him/her? Pathetic how the news only wants to announce the parts of the story that will sell papers.
Posted by: GScott | April 09, 2009 at 11:07 AM
RIP and thoughts and prayers to his family.
Posted by: thedeuce | April 09, 2009 at 11:08 AM
You're surprised that a newspaper specifically mentioned that a professional athlete was killed but failed to offer the names of the others?
As much as people care about the deaths of others, this isn't major news unless one of the killed is famous. It's not that people are insensitive, but rather that people have trouble caring about the deaths of people that they never knew existed. Not saying that the other guys death isn't as important, but in terms of the context of mainstream news, the death of Nick Adenhart is legitimately newsworthy.
Obviously you have to hope for the best from here out, and I'm sure the whole world offers their most sincere condolences to the Adenhart family, as well as the families of the other victims.
Posted by: scribbletone | April 09, 2009 at 11:13 AM
I'm still in shock. I was at the game last night and watched him pitch. This was by far his best outing of his career as well. I still can't believe this actually happened. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

This is incredibly saddening news. My condolences go out to Adenhart's family. I never saw him pitch, but I know he was highly regarded and had a bright future ahead of him.
As for the news sensationalism, I feel even worse for Nick's family, many of whom probably heard about this first from the news and not from the hospital or the police. This is not true of the other people in the car. Nick's fame makes this even harder, not just for us as baseball fans but for Nick's family as well.

That's a really tragic news. I actually saw part of his performance last night against the A's and was fairly impressed.
It just goes to remind us how many people dies from vehicle accidents daily.

For the first time maybe ever, my heart goes out to the Angels organization and their fans, this is a complete and total horiffic tragedy.
After watching him sit down all the A's hitters you knew he was going to have a promising future in the game, this is sad as hell. You wont be heckled by me this year out of respect.
RIP Nick.

"This is terrible! They announce Adenhart's name but because the other guy wasn't a star or future star (presumably) no one cares about him/her? Pathetic how the news only wants to announce the parts of the story that will sell papers."
As Jagteg mentions, hearing about this type of situation in the news is even more difficult for a family. The names of the other two in the wreck are most likely being held until the families can be contacted. Unfortunately, stardom ensures the name we all know will be released. I dont think you should be upset, but rather happy, that the other two names have not be released just yet. Let the families have their proper moment rather then their phone wringing off the hook from friends telling them of the tragedy.
Posted by: SuzysMan | April 09, 2009 at 11:28 AM
What a terrible tragedy for his family and the Angels. A drunk driver Fox new says?
This is not the 1st time a tremendous talent for the Angels has been tragically killed either. Newly signed FA Lyman Bostock was killed/murdered while playing for them also a little over 30 years ago.
Posted by: johns | April 09, 2009 at 11:31 AM
Sensationalism aside, I think this death cuts deeper than the normal auto fatality you hear on the news because we rarely know the face and the name that is reported, not to mention that we rarely connect with their life story in any way.
So when someone like Nick is killed, we feel that loss, not because they were more important, but because a connection was made.
I can't even imagine what it must be like to be a member of those families, a member of the Angels organization, or a friend to Nick Adenhart.
Rest in peace.

My thoughts are prayers are out to Adenhart and the others killed in this horrible crash. Just a few thoughts on this matter.
1. Drunk driving laws need to strengthened, but will always be castrated cause there will always be legislatures that are lawyers that want to make sure thier clients can get off.
2.I am glad they caught this guy when they did. This way they can test for BAC and physically out him behing the wheel of the vehicle.
3.If they did catch him later he would claim his car was "stolen" and didnt relise it was gone. We in todays society want to blame everyone else for our actions and not take the responsibility for our own actions.
4.This is a time where we put down our fierce alligences to our teams, Cubs fans will mourn with Cardinals fans Yankees fans will mourn Red Sox fans we lay down our team colors and logos and become one a baseball nation that mourns the all too sood death of a ball player.

I have had 2 friends killed in car accidents and it is an awful experience, as a family or friend, to endure. I hope they may all come together and get through this; they will need each other in the coming days. I hope the Angels postpone any game they may have today.

Absolute tragedy. My thoughts out to the families of everyone lost. I really hope the other deaths are also not players as that just make it harder for the fans too.
As a Broncos fan, when we lost D.Williams it made for a crappy offseason for the club and the fans. The deaths are obviously equally tragic, but the timing is really horrible as Halo fans and the club will have to deal with this all season long.

Such a sad story, he went out and pitched a great game yesterday, our team will miss him, so promising. My heart goes out to the Adenhart family.
Posted by: angelsfan | April 09, 2009 at 12:34 PM
Sad part of this is,the 22 year old MIGHT spend years in jail---more likely he will plead out with some bleeding heart judge get 3 or 4 years in jail 5 to 10 on probabtion and lose his license (which he probably will still drive without it).Where you have to hurt drunk drivers is in the wallet--make them pay for the tradegy--garnishment of wages, claim any income tax refunds and large lottery winnings.
Posted by: ryno23 | April 09, 2009 at 12:45 PM
For me, this is the most tragic loss in baseball since Cory Lidle. This is more tragic than that though. Not to downplay the loss of Cory Lidle, but losing a young phenom who has just pitched one of the best games of his life hurts more.
As a Nationals fan, but more importantly, a fan of baseball overall, my deepest sympathies and condolences go out to Nick's family, freinds, and the Angels organization.
Regardless of what deity you believe in, I ask anyone reading this post and comments to pray for Nick's family in their time of loss.
I'll end with a quote from the Dave Matthews' song "Gravedigger": "Now, you should never have to watch your only children lowered in the ground
I mean you should never have to bury your own babies"
Posted by: phoenix88 | April 09, 2009 at 12:46 PM

I was getting ready for bed last night and heard sirens and the ghetto bird roaming around outside.
Then I woke up this morning and heard that Nick Adenhart had been killed in a hit-and-run on the corner of Lemon & Orangethorpe in Fullerton last night. And I live on the corner of Harbor & Orangethorpe.
The accident happened less than a block away from my house.
I still haven't gone over there to look. And I don't really want to.
I was a pitcher who's arm blew out at age 15. And to lose a young pitcher who blew out his arm at 17, was still given a chance by the Angels, paid 1st round money to be drafted in the 14th round, became a top prospect after being an afterthought, and then died after having the best game of his life just cuts me like a knife.
Nick was an inspiration to me because he over came the same obstacle and succeeded.
Now he is gone.
All my heart goes out to the Adenhart family and to the Angels' family.
They will most likely cancel tonight's game.
And I don't expect the Angels to perform well for a while because Buck Showalter was right, there is no blue print for this kid of situation.
Maybe God had a better plan in mind for Nick Adenhart. He was already at 22, a good man.
RIP (1986-2009)

Just a shame, one of the worst deaths of a young sports star since Darrent Williams of the Broncos. It doesn't make it any better, but at least he got to live the dream for a little while. He pitched a great game in front of a ML home crowd just hours before this happened. I really hope that helped him and brought him some peace in his last hours, I like to think that it did. No kid that young should have to die ever. RIP Nick Adenhart.

He was a great kid and looked like a true major league player. But baseball means nothing right now. Rest in Peace Nick, you have the support of Southern California, and all of baseball and America.
One thing to think about is the Fullerton police chief has said they are charging the man who fled the season with DUI felony manslaugter among other chargers, and he was on a suspended license. the chief has no plans to pled him out.

WE as a society do not take drunk drivin as serious until something like this happens--and my last statement is was we all put down our team colors and our pride being a Cubs fan or Red Sox or As and become united as baseball fans. I do apologise that I have to defend myself in thos post to somelike you.
Posted by: ryno23 | April 09, 2009 at 05:06 PM
I wasn't going to post anything because what can you really say other than how sad this is. However, I was watching mlb tv and saw Scott Boras breaking down and crying at the news conference and it just really makes us all (or it did me) really keep in mind that regardless of who you like or don't like, who you root for or against, or whose against is a jerk, this is, at the end of the day, just a game. It's a game played by people made of skin and bones. It's a game played by someones child and possibly someones husband and father. Maybe this will help us focus on what happens on the field and keep that seperate to how we feel about players. Hate the team but keep focus on the fact that the players are people with issues, emotions and people who care about them and depend on them. Let's not let these sentiments and moments of clarity be a short lived thing. Take it to heart. I might hate the Boston Red Sox but I would feel awful were something to happen to any of it's players. God bless all.

Nick, you were an absolute pleasure to watch last night, but baseball really doesn't seem all that relevant right now. I hope you rest in peace. To the Angels fans, thoughts and prayers are with you from a shocked and saddened Red Sox Nation.

I think that everybody should agree to disagree. This is unfathomable to me. I just hope everyone takes this as a reminder to how precious our lives are. This thread is for tribute and recollection of a great man who was taken from this world way too early. MLB needs to start a foundation. This is unbelievable hearing the new developments and such.

I got a text message from my friend while eating lunch today telling me about this. It was the strangest thing, because we were just talking about him last night. I was telling him about how excited I was for his start, and then a few hours later we talked again, with me saying how great of a job he did. Up until last night, my friend had never heard of Nick Adenhart before.
I'm sure I can speak for anyone out there and say that our thoughts are with the Adenhart family and the Angels organization. Coming from a Yankee Fan, I know how hard it can be to lose a member of your organization. Just a few years ago we lost Cory Liddle in a plane crash -- while he wasn't "young" he was still a person who died too young.
RIP Adenhart. You had a bright future ahead of you and you will be missed.

as a baseball fan this is truely a disheartening moment. adenhart looked to be the ace of the future for the angels, he was a stand-up guy, and worked so very hard to get where he was. he was a really driven and dedicated player. he will be missed as will the others who passed during this atrocity. if it were my decision, i'd give him the max and then some. theres no excuse to drive drunk.

My heart goes out to everyone involved in this: Nick's family, his friends, the Angels organization, et all.
RIP Nick.

Sad. I woke up this morning to Harvey Levin from TMZ confirming it was Nick Adenhart who died in the car, wasn't the greatest way to start your b-day. Adenhart had so much potential for the Angels.
I know it's not much, but on all of my fantasy teams, i dropped my best pitcher and picked up Adenhart. No one deserves to die this young unless you're the one doing it.

Wow. So so sad. My sons and I watched the A's/Angels game last night and I DVR'd the game. My prayers go out to the families and friends of those killed.

Was at the Sox/Royals game today and had not heard the news. Noticed flags were at half-mast and wondered why. Prior to the anthem they had a LONG moment of silence with Nick's picture on the board. Both teams stood silently on the dugout steps . Shocking and sad at the same time.

This too me is just unbelievable. From what I have heard, he was a great kid who everybody loved. R.I.P. Nick. My deepest condolences are with your family. You will be sadly missed from everybody in Pirate's Nation, and across America.

Just as a human being, losing ANYONE to a drunk driver is sad and unfortunate. But as a baseball fan, someone who is not a fan of the Angels but respects them as a classy organization, this is sad. He had such a bright future, a bright career ahead of him, and a piece of crap human being had to take it away from him. I'm hoping the Angels win it all, just because I believe everything happens for a reason.. may he rest in peace.
