« Yankees DFA Eric Hacker | Main | Odds & Ends: Isringhausen, Sturtze, Molina »
SATURDAY, 7:18pm: According to the Associated Press, via the Miami Herald, the A's have sent minor league infielder Joe Dillon to the Rays to complete the trade.
Dillon, 33, has been on the Triple-A Sacramento disabled list all season with a lower back injury. He hit .263/.374/.409 in 171 minor league at-bats last season and will simply provide organizational depth for the Rays.
FRIDAY, 6:48pm: Marc Lancaster of the Tampa Tribune gathered a nice quote from Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman, on why the club felt compelled to make the deal:
"It's an extended opportunity for Adam and we weren't going to stand in the way," said Friedman. "We feel like we're going to get a guy that's going to help us some depth-wise, and that was our understanding with Adam coming in -- we're not a group that's going to stand in the way of someone, especially someone that hadn't played in the minor leagues in 10 years."
4:31pm: According to Jeff Fletcher of AOL Fanhouse the Rays traded Adam Kennedy to the A's for a player to be named later. Kennedy, 33, was playing at Triple-A Durham for the Rays and the A's have assigned him to their Triple-A affiliate, Sacramento. Kennedy gives the A's the infield depth they need after losing Mark Ellis, Eric Chavez and Nomar Garciaparra to the disabled list.

I was just going to say, shouldn't it be reported when the DL loses Nomar and Chavez to the A's?

Love this move for the A's.
I assume that Kennedy will be called up almost immediately, as he's already better than Hannahan. Kennedy at 2B and Petit/Crosby at 3B is the best the A's can do right now (or Kennedy at 3B, Petit at 2B, which would be better defensively).

it wasnt said because they arent top name players, like Beltran, Manny, Jeter, Berkman, etc. This site only covers injuries of top line players, and neither are ones, anymore at least

Respectful move by the Rays, one that could help them sign 2nd-chance guys in the future.

Seriously, why dont we just stop saying Chavez is on the DL? And why dont the A's just buy him out and trade for Beltre or Adtkins maybe.

This is pretty much what I expected. Basically, a trade of minor league FA depth in order to get a guy who wouldnt be in the bigs to be on a team that he can be (if only for a short time).
Though I thought they'd get someone like Danny Putnam over Dillion.

Because Seattle would be insane to trade to a direct rival in what's looking to be a close division race.

". Kennedy at 2B and Petit/Crosby at 3B is the best the A's can do right now (or Kennedy at 3B, Petit at 2B, which would be better defensively)."
I disagree.
Kennedy is a VERY good defensive second baseman (career UZR/150 of 9.6, and he posted a UZR/150 of 21.8 last season), and he's NEVER played a single inning at third base in his major league career.
Petit is a very good defensive second baseman as well, but Hannahan has proven at the major league level that he's an exceptional defensive third baseman, even if his bat is very subpar.
If we're talking solely about defense, and possibly overall considering Petit's bat sucks too, then I think you go Hannahan/Kennedy, no doubt.

Good deal for the A's. Kennedy'll fit right in. I think they got pretty lucky with this pick up.

How many more infielders do the A's need?
Posted by: Tigers23 | May 10, 2009 at 10:39 PM
Just some healthy ones that can swing a bat and catch would be nice.

Kennady is going to do just fine. I was wondering where he was. I say maybe 20-30 games starting tops and then just a defensive replacemnt

looking back at this now, WOW WOW what a pickup and what a loss for the rays
