« Free Agent Hot Starts | Main | Doug Davis A Midseason Trade Candidate? »
On this date three years ago, the Red Sox traded for Doug Mirabelli to be Tim Wakefield's personal catcher. Mirabelli had to put his uniform on in the car from the airport and arrived 13 minutes prior to first pitch against the Yankees. While trades in April and May are rare, they are not unprecedented. Let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere...

Ugh, no no no no no.
No to Pedro. $5M for someone who MIGHT be an effective reliever??! Riiiight.
No to Chone - he's going to cost too much. I'd take him for a few $M a year, but he's going to demand more than he's worth.

1. As long as we're talking about signing Chone and not trading for him. Problem is that he's a starter on almost every team and the Yanks wont have him starting, unless he's playing CF. I like CoCo Crisp better as a CF FA on a 1 year deal for the Yanks.
2. Why would they sign ANOTHER arm to block Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy? These guys are MLB ready and they need to pitch. Now, I'm one of Pedro's bigger supporters on this site, but he just doesn't make sense for the Yanks.

Completely agree with everything in that Colletti article.
Did Colletti make some good moves? Absolutely. One of them at the expense of my team. He also made some awful moves.
Logan White and Kim Ng are easily the centerpieces for the team's success. Good drafting? Check. International relations? Check (the Kuroda deal was almost all Logan White).

"The Fightins honor Raul Ibanez's first month with the Phillies. The signing was highly criticized."
One good month doesn't make it a good signing. Let's see how he is later in the year or the following 2 years.

Even Mets fans like yourself have to admit that Raul has had a good first month. Also, note that neither site said it was a good signing, so I'm not sure what you're trying to make a stand against.

melonis-
I totally agree about Pedro to the Yanks (though I'm not as big of a Pedro supporter as you). What is the logic at this point of keeping Hughes and Kennedy down in the minors? They need to start facing MLB hitters, facing guys in AAA isn't going to make either that much better at this point.

icedrake,
you say that on your knees praying and fingers crossed?

Yeah, at this point what purpose would Pedro serve? Of course it's early and anything can happen (see Wang) but you can't sign Pedro and sit him in a glass case marked "break glass in case of emergeny". As for Figgins, he's a good player and might fit well in CF and as a super back up in case Arod needs a day of. I really like Pena's defense at SS and 3B but would prefer him back in AAA when Arod returns so he can play everyday and work on his offense. I'm not sure what it would take to get Figgins? I would NOT give up anything of signifigance (Hughes, IPK, Ajax, Montero, Betances, McAllister, Romine, Mitchell, Melancon) especially since he's a free agent next year. Would this deal work?
Alfredo Aceves, 26 yrs, AAA (4 starts, 2-0, 3.80 era, 23 innings, 8 walks/15 kos) and Shelly Duncan, 29 ys, 1B/Rf/Lf, (.372/.437/.756 w/ 9 hrs in 78 at bats) for Chone Figgins?
The Angels would get two viable #4 or #5 starters that might help them out.

Yes, I was talking about Ethier for Bradley. I might be wrong on the Colletti/DePodesta thing though. If I'm right, it was one of Colletti's earliest trades. I might be wrong though.

I mean to include Igawa in that above trade proposal. Yes.....yes....yes. I know he's hot garbage but if the Yanks kicked in cash then why not?

"Did Colletti make some good moves? Absolutely. One of them at the expense of my team. He also made some awful moves."
I am no fan of Colletti, but I do think that much of the blame for the truly bad moves, especially Jones, lies on McCourt. McCourt is the one who basically ordered him to sign Jones to a high dollar, short term deal. Jason Schmidt, however, was completely Colletti's doing.
"Logan White and Kim Ng are easily the centerpieces for the team's success. Good drafting? Check. International relations? Check (the Kuroda deal was almost all Logan White)."
Don't forget salary negotiations as well. Also, the Kuroda deal was as much Takashi Saito and location as it was anyone or anything else.

The Bradley/Perez for Ethier trade went down 28 days after Colletti became GM. Given the nature of the deal and Ethier's particular tools, I am pretty sure that Logan White was the driving force behind that deal as well. I wouldn't be surprised if DePodesta had known about Ethier from his days in Oakland, given that Ethier was a high OBP/moderate (now higher) power college prospect.
