More from Jayson Stark's Rumblings and Grumblings column today...
- Stark rattles off a bunch of starting pitchers teams are "tracking" in advance of the trade deadline: Roy Halladay, Jake Peavy, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, Aaron Harang, Erik Bedard, Kevin Millwood, Mark Buehrle, Doug Davis, Chris Young, Andy Pettitte, Bronson Arroyo, Jonathan Sanchez, Andy Sonnanstine, Jeff Niemann, Jason Marquis, Vicente Padilla, Jeff Suppan, and Russ Ortiz. Not all of these guys are actually available, so check out the article for more analysis.
- Teams are "backpedaling away" from Vladimir Guerrero as a free agent option after the season. One scout sees Vlad as a DH right now.
- C.C. Sabathia downplayed the importance of the out clause in his contract, talking to Stark. Sabathia said it was "just something my agent came up with, and I just went with it." Stark is skeptical though; he thinks the clause was specific to New York.
- Stark talked to a baseball man familiar with the Rays' thinking who sees "zero chance" they don't exercise Carl Crawford's $10.125MM option for 2010. The Rays have a three-year outlook on the budget.
- With Jason Isringhausen ready within a few weeks, the Rays may have a surplus in the bullpen. Stark doesn't expect Dan Wheeler or J.P. Howell to be moved, but teams are tracking them.
- Stark sees Jorge Cantu as a trade candidate after the season. He figures to make $5-6MM through arbitration.
I Hope CC Sabathia Leave After The 3 Years

Cantu would only get $5-6MM through arb?! What!? I know this stuff is kind of determined by actuarial tables and whatnot, but, seriously!? The guy has a line so far this year of .326/.400/.685 and over the past 2 seasons has an OPS + of 119. He'd be another valuable trade chip for the poor Fish.

I remember the Fangraph's article on Chris Young on how over 95% of runners who attempted to steal off him made it. Everyone faster than David Ortiz should run on him all the time.

The Rays would be really smart to trade Dan Wheeler to whoever is interested.
He's a league average reliever, and that contract just isn't that nice. Trade him to free up payroll room for 2010, since the Rays have payroll issues.

The Rays are going to pay a player $10M??? I thought their whole payroll was $10M. LOL.

"tark talked to a baseball man familiar with the Rays' thinking who sees "zero chance" they don't exercise Carl Crawford's $10.125MM option for 2010."
Well, duh. The guy posted 4.5+ win seasons in 2004-2006, and while his defense dropped in 2007, and then his offense dropped in 2008, he's back to being an all around stud this year.
He's combination of contact hitting, speed, a little pop, and some of the best defense in the game makes him a star. And you exercise a $10.5M option for stars.

I really don't know what to think of Cantu so far.
Cantu is an AWFUL defensive player, at both third and first, which kills a lot of value, along with the fact that he's near worthless on the bases.
Considering he had a .327 OBP in 2008, that made him a pretty unimpressive player at third base.
But this season, he's been destroying the ball for whatever reason. His BABIP is exactly the same as last season (.296). He's hitting less line drives and more fly balls, and an odd number of those fly balls are being converted into home runs.
Meanwhile, he's walking more and striking out less, and he's making contact at a higher rate despite swinging at less pitches overall.
I think that Cantu has definitely improved his plate discipline from last season, which should lead to some improvement in his offensive performance, but he'll never quite hit enough to offset his awful defense, making him a star.
