Yahoo's Gordon Edes updates us on the Cardinals' search for a bat and more in his most recent column. Here are the details:
- The Cardinals aren't interested in Miguel Tejada, but they are looking to add offensive help at third or in the outfield.
- Some have criticized the Pirates for taking Tony Sanchez fourth overall, but Edes hears they chose him because they like his tools and believe he's polished enough to reach the majors before most players in the draft.
- The Nationals would move Elijah Dukes or Lastings Milledge. Ryan Zimmerman is their only untouchable player.
- The Rangers have interest in Nick Johnson.
- There is speculation that Indians GM Mark Shaprio could be promoted to club president, with Chris Antonetti becoming GM. Edes hears that we won't see an in-season shake-up.
- Bill Lajoie, one of the decision-makers behind the deal that sent Hanley Ramirez to Florida, doesn't second guess the move.
- Edes heard from one scouting director who believes Bryce Harper is stronger than Chipper Jones, Alex Rodriguez or Manny Ramirez when they were in high school. However, some scouts wonder whether Harper would be better if he didn't rush to the majors.
"Bill Lajoie, one of the decision-makers behind the deal that sent Hanley Ramirez to Florida, doesn't second guess the move"
Does he still have a job?

Lastings Milledge - worth a flier by some team? Or has he just lost it?

why in the hell dont the nationals deal one of their stinkin outfielders to the braves for whatever in hell they need. The braves have pitching, infielders, and outfielders(but i doubt the nationals would trade an outfielder for an outfielder.) I would say a Josh Willingham for a Kris Medlen(22 YEAR OLD SP/RP) and mabie a 30 year old minor leager would do the job.

If you look at the deal for Hanley, you will see an even swap. Mike Lowell has been an offensive staple for Boston, hitting 58 bombs and driving in 273 runs in 3 full years as a sock. Beckett has become the ace of the staff and has a 48-28 record with Boston, not to mention a few playoff wins as well. Hanley has become one lf the best players in the game , and Anibal Sanchez is a reliable 3rd starter. Harvey Garcia and Jesus Delgado have yet to pan out, but are still relatively young. Overall, it seems like a cost saving push to me.

I know Ryan Zimmerman is freaking good, but if the Nats were to get a massive haul for him, it would definitely be for the better long term.
Dealing him along with most of the vets (Willingham, Johnson, Kearns, Guzman, maybe Dunn) would really propel the farm system into one of the elite systems.

The Pirates' spin machine is the worst. Thank God I'm not a Pirate's fan...not sure I could take it.

you don't trade Zimmerman or even think about it. with Strasbourg and Harper next year and adding them to Zimmerman you have a very good solid foundation to build upon.

Why don't the cardinal try Wallace at third since nobody seems right for them or talk to the nats about trading dunn or another outfielder.

Lasting Milledge: Lost it? When did he ever have it to lose?

"Why don't the cardinal try Wallace at third since nobody seems right for them or talk to the nats about trading dunn or another outfielder."
Mo already stated that Wallace will not see the majors this year (except for a possible Sept. call up). He's not exactly tearing up AAA and can use some more defensive work at 3B.

Nats cant trade willingham, he's one of their better offensive bats. Kearns has lots so much stock wiht this slump he is in, they'd be lucky to get a B-level prospect for him.
As far as i'm concerned Lastings milledge is one of those players who never live up their potential. honestly, he belongs on a team that needs outfielders, what team that is, i dont know. Lastings milledge is the milton bradley of the NL East

i assume the Rangers interest in Nick Johnson would have him the regular 1B and send Chris Davis to the minors?

trade for Derosa, he can play 3B for the cards, then also trade for brandon phillips for second base. this could be a huge deal, but id take the chance. trade ankiel and duncan or ludwick

cgreif8, as sweet as it would be to see the Cards get Phillips, there is no way it happens. Phillips would be a great player to have, his offense and defense are both pluses (tony loves his defense) but if people were saying that the Astros would never trade Tejada to the Cards then there is no way the Reds trade Phillips to us. I definetly think that the Derosa idea has a very good chance of happening as long as the Indians fall out of it. Brandon Phillips would add the big bat that we are looking for, just wouldn't happen because they are still in it and wouldn't deal within the division.
I think that the Cards should definetly inquire on Adam Dunn though. That would be a great bat to add. Yeah he strikes out a lot and his defense sucks but having him hit behind Albert would be great. Honestly, Dunn is probably a better defender than Duncan anyways.

I like the idea of Nick Johnson going to the Rangers. He's solid defensively at 1B and has a good bat. He would help them stay on top in the AL West.

Whoever said that the Nats aren't going to trade Willingham is smoking something. The only reason we sign players like him is so we can trade them for prospects.

I would love to see derosa or phillips but let's be frank, Derosa and Phillips each one of them would cost aton unless the Indians or reds have a firewood sale which dosen't seem likely. But Wallace seems to me Atleast is worth a shot

you are right motley14, would you like to see tejada or derosa? and about phillips you are right, but in the future when hes becomes a free agent (do you know when that is?) they should offer a big deal for the guy, hes great
