« Discussion: Which Contract Would You Get Rid Of? | Main | Rosenthal On Giants, Dye, Lopez, Kennedy »
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that Troy Glaus could appeal to teams looking for a first baseman or DH. The Cardinals may not have room for Glaus when he returns from his injury, since his hitting is progressing better than his throwing. With Albert Pujols at first and no DH, the Cardinals may decide to trade Glaus if he can't play third.

Braves? That makes little sense unless he can play right. Kotchman is solid offensively and has elite leatehr.

If the Braves are interested its purely to play against left handed pitchers. Even with the Cards picking up almost all his contract it wouldn't make much sense to give up hardly anything for a platoon partner for Kotchman.

If his throwing sucks, he probably could throw to the pitcher.

couldn't**

Glaus simply isn't a fit for the Braves. Same goes for Tigers & Mariners.

Royals should go for him.

i like it for the mets, considering they need a big bat and don't want to give up much, and when delgado comes back, he's a good bat off the bench

is this a joke?

Bad idea for the Mariners. They've god Branyan, Carp, and Sweeny already at first, and Griffey and the above at DH. Maybe if the dump Sweeney and platoon him with Griffey when he isn't in the outfield. But power only guys are not made for Safeco.

Braves won't be in. They're going to be motivated by nothing but payroll.

Yeah, agreeing with Frejus re: Mariners, and several other posters re: Braves. Among Rosenthal's suggestions, I could see the Mets, Giants and Tigers possibly making sense. I'm guessing a move back to Anaheim wouldn't work because of Vlad's presence, but maybe the Angels get lucky and he hits the DL. He's a black hole in that lineup. If anyone's still in love with batting average, Vlad's June stats are a prime example of that stat's relative meaninglessness.
"Royals should go for him." Why would the Royals do that? Unless STL literally shipped him over for free, or they could trade a bad contract, this wouldnt make sense.

I think that a few teams make some sense.
The Red Sox could use him if Ortiz's June (.308/.400/.654) proves to be the fluke.
Toronto and Texas could make some sense. Jose Bautista isn't going to maintain that OBP, and Texas needs to get some non-home run production from everyone in the lineup not named Young, Cruz, Andrus, Byrd, Kinsler, Jones or Vizquel. Blalock, Davis, Salty, Teagarden, and Murphy have been awfully unimpressive this year.

How can you say Murphy is awful since going 0-22 to start the season he has rebounded and hit for a .308 average since then...it's pretty sad but hes been one of our consistent hitters since Hamilton has went down.

I think Rosenthal is a little wrong here. The only way the braves would acquire a new 1B is if it were an elite type. Kotchman may not have the most amazing bat, but his defense has been flawless as a Brave. And it's not like his offense is hurting the team.

Yeah, Kotchman has been pretty good defensively this year (+8.4 UZR/150), but any contender needs to get more than .264/.324/.376 from their everyday first baseman.

Kotchman is a doubles machine btw.

"Kotchman is a doubles machine btw."
If that was actually true this year, there wouldn't be any talk of Glaus, as Kotchman has historically hit same-side pitchers very well.
Casey Kotchman of 2007 is an excellent player to have at 1B. Casey Kotchman of this year or the second half of last year is a pinch hitter and defensive replacement.

I'm still mad about the Kotchman/Teixeira trade!
