« Discussion: St. Louis Cardinals | Main | Odds & Ends: Bruce, Ozzie, Indians »
MLB.com's Joe Frisaro spoke to Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest, who said he's looking to add pieces before this month's trade deadline.
"We don't want to take away, we'd like to add," Beinfest said.
"We'd like to improve just like all the other teams looking to improve," Beinfest said. "We recognize, we're heading into the All-Star Break, and we're in the race for the division. So you want to see what's out there to improve yourself the best you can.
"There are so many teams in it, that it's tough to make trades. They don't want to take from their team. They want to add to it. In terms of your prospects, you have a threshold on what to give and not to give."
The Marlins have already said that they will not be moving any of their top prospects for help. Beinfest said the team will "make do" with what they have when it comes to the bullpen, noting that Matt Lindstrom will hopefully be back on a mound in the next week.

Sherrill for Matt Dominguez plus another
- Sherrill would be worth the risk off taking a proven closer for a young 3rd basemen and one more

How about Mike Jacobs for Leo Nuñez? Haha. Or you can have Jacobs back for a pack of Big League Chew.

Matt Dominguez alone is worth more than Sherrill. Sherrill is what 32 years old?

This could be a very slow trading season. Everyone has a need (or several), but nobody is willing to give up ANYTHING to fill it.

As a Braves fan, I hope that the Marlins do "make due" with their bullpen. But I suspect that Beinfest would rather "make do" instead.

I'd love to see them make some moves at the deadline. They're in the mix, why not? It would be nice to see some different teams in the mix near the deadline. They tried something big last year with Manny, so they may be willing to make a big move.
I wouldn't be totally surprised if they make a deal for Matt Holliday. Gaby Sanchez, Ryan Tucker, and maybe another prospect or Bonifacio may get it done. If it happens, you heard it here first!

When it comes to Manny, you never can tell how much of it is actual truth and the rest smoke and mirrors to drum up interest...
That being said, the Sox were paying his entire salary, so they were probably interested...
I couldn't see them making a push for Holliday unless they were sitting atop the wildcard or NL East and had serious aspirations of making a deep postseason run... They wouldn't part with prospects for someone they wouldn't plan on resigning (alah Milwaukee)... It has never been their style and it probably never will be...

I think Big league chew used to be bubble gum and "The Jake" looks like he must shove at least a full pack of the real thing inside his right jaw from the way his mouth protrudes out on the right side. HAHAHA
Anyway, Jacobs did hit a mammoth shot last night at Fenway, which is why they got him, maybe he can turn it around the second half. He never was an OBP guy anyway.

Billy McMillon for Darren Daulton in '97 (While Billy never developed into a star, he had a decent 8 yr Big League carer and was one of our top prospects at the time of the trade).
Adrian Gonzalez for Ugueth URbina ('nuff said...)
Last year, they considered Hermida/Stanton/Tucker for Manny.
On the contrary, the Marlins DO have a history of trading prospects for one yr rentals as long as that trade would push them over the top in terms of the playoffs.

Mike Gonzalez for Gaby Sanchez?

Raphel Soriano for Mike Stanton

Here's a thought...
The Marlins have Ramirez, Uggla and Cantu. If they were to move the 3 of them, they could get a massive pile of really great players and prospects.
By the time they get a new ballpark they will have another talented team in place and hopefully more people to watch the team and pay the bills so they can increase payroll and not lose the high priced guys.
They will be unable to extend Uggla and Ramirez with their current financial position so why not start building for the future right now.

"They will be unable to extend Uggla and Ramirez with their current financial position so why not start building for the future right now."
Uhhhhh sorry but Ramirez is signed for a 6 year contract. He already is signed to an extension. He will only be in year 3 of this contract when the stadium opens.
"Raphel Soriano for Mike Stanton"
Mike Stanton isn't going to get traded.
"Mike Gonzalez for Gaby Sanchez?"
This is more plausible, but why would the Braves want Sanchez when you have Kotchman?
Posted by: Barroid_Bonds | July 12, 2009 at 04:49 PM
Barroid Bonds,
Because Kotchman can't hit in the .280's to save his life. And when his contract is up, the only power option we'll have is Mccann.
Posted by: Braves for NL East!! | July 12, 2009 at 06:11 PM
Pretty hard to add pieces when your not willing to pay anything to get them!
Posted by: RED SOX DYNASTY! | July 12, 2009 at 06:59 PM
Gaby isn't much of a power threat. He will hit 15-25.
Posted by: Barroid_Bonds | July 12, 2009 at 07:04 PM
Kotchman can't hit 5-10 HR's

Seriously? No power options outside of McCann? Perhaps you have forgotten that the Braves have two 19 year old studs in the minors right now with lots of power in Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman(who happens to play first). And if you consider Kotchman a power bat I wonder how much you really know about baseball and the braves. Kotchman is a doubles guy, not a HR hitter.
