ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that three teams with "at least some level of interest" in starter Ben Sheets say he he won't be able to help a big league team this year. He's five months removed from flexor tendon surgery, an operation that kept Jason Jennings out for a year and a half.
Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus says he's heard some suggestions that Sheets could miss the season.

I could see the Brewers and Phillies going after him since they both need pitching. Texas, despite needing him badly, don't have the money with them borrowing money and still needing to sign their top drafts.

Well, duh.

And people were complaining this offseason that their team wouldn't sign him for 10 million per for a year or two. Clearly everyone in baseball figured this was going to happen and that's why Sheets got no serious offers in the offseason. This is just one example of everyone thinking they're smarter than everyone within the baseball industry...take it as a lesson people.

if you look at sheets' numbers -- especially early in hos career, he was a workhorse.
2002 - 216 ip
2003 - 220 ip
204 -- 237 ip
he was on pace in 08 for 200+ when he was injured (finished with 198).
lasorda loves the guy as sheets was a key element for the 2000 US gold medal baseball team.
if healthy in 2010, he'll probably have to sign for a smaller contract - perhaps even one year with incentives.
i hope tommy talk LA into that signing. when healthy sheets dominates.
