Kendry Morales Hires Scott Boras

By Mike Axisa | February 14, 2010 at 8:52am CDT

While he lost free agent Felipe Lopez yesterday, agent Scott Boras has picked up a new client in Angels first baseman Kendry Morales, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.  Morales is entering the final season of a six year, $4.5MM contract and will be arbitration-eligible for the first time after this season.

The 26-year-old Morales was previously represented by the Hendricks brothers.  Jorge Arangure Jr. of ESPN writes that Morales helped lure Aroldis Chapman to Hendricks Sports Management.

Boras is to baseball agents as Lenny Dykstra is to picking stocks. When the market is good, everyone looks like a genius. When the market is bad, the emperor is revealed to be wearing no clothes.

Boras got some outrageous contracts for some mediocre talent before, but now that the market has tightened up, he’s no different from hundreds of other agents out there. Except in his own mind. ANYONE could get Morales big money when he hits FA. But how come Boras advised Adrian Beltre to turn down two, three-year offers before taking a one year deal with Boston? Smarten up Scott…

Except that Morales doesn’t hit free agency for at least 3 more years, and isn’t even arbitration eligible until 2011. Given that he has really only had 1 good year (2009) if he doesn’t follow that up with successive good years he may find that at 29 he will be in the same boat as other Boras clients that aren’t really worthy of the “big money” and that appears to be all Boras is interested in. It should be interesting to see what happens.

He can’t, a young player like Morales, if he wants to cash big this is exactly what he should do.

Yup. I love how everyone blames Boras for Damon, but they dont mention how Branyan, Gomes, Dye, and Calero are NOT Boras clients and neither of them have a team either.

Damon is a LOT better than the other players you listed at this point in their careers, except for maybe Dye who is pretty much the same player as Damon now but from the right side.

A LOT? Not sure about alot when you factor in his defense and Yankee Stadium. He may be the best FA left, but Damon also turned down offers, that’s why he’s unsigned. Dye turned down 3m from the Cubs, why isnt his agent getting blasted for screwing his client?

I’m not saying Boras isn’t a good agent. I’m saying he’s ruining the game of baseball.

WHICH is something a yankees fan wouldn’t understand

Ruining the game of baseball- You mean like owners who receive 40m before the season even starts, yet their payroll is below 40m? Or the Royals having Drayton Moore as their GM?

There are many people who are ruining baseball; blaming an agent for getting his clients the best offer from a bunch of BILLIONAIRES for ruining baseball is stupid.

By the way- whats your favorite team steven?

im with you brotha…. its his job as an agent to do what he does… hes the best agent out there clearly from a player standpoint…. and im guessing steven42 is just mad bc his team is a low payroll team that would never be able to afford any of boras players… so yeah ” hes ruining the game “…

          I’m a Braves fan.

Boras is great at what he does, that’s why I hate him. It’s the same reason why Mets fans boo Chipper every time he comes into their stadium–because he kicks their asses regularly.

The Braves can afford plenty of Boras clients, but I still wish there was a salary cap because I think it would make the game more competitive overall. Not to mention, it might help prevent teams from buying championships.

            “game more competitive overall”

Maybe, or you get teams with bad contracts that sink their teams for years like the Knicks. There are still alot of bad teams in the NBA/NFL. And salary cap comes with salary floor, think small market owners are going to sign off on being required to spend 80m+ on their players? Would that mean they need a bigger hangout from the Yankees so they can put it in their pocket?

I’m a Yanks fan and I understand exactly why he is ruining the game of baseball.

I don’t think I even refer to Borasshole by his actual name anymore. The day he passes on will be the only time I will say it’s a good thing that something like that happened.

Yeah, I hate him that much.

Nah. You see, I didn’t wish death on him, I just said that I will be happy when he goes.

He’s nowhere near the top of my list. They are the people I reserve my complete hate for.

“I’m not saying Boras isn’t a good agent. I’m saying he’s ruining the game of baseball.”

So, you’d rather the billions of dollars being made in profits from baseball go to the owners instead of the players who are on the field actually playing the game?

Last time I checked it was Boras who landed Magg’s that back breaking contract he got… Boras still is the best agent out there to maximize profit.

Someone was going to overpay him regardless of the agent because power bats are grossly overvalued. This just means that he’ll hold out for money which, depending on the market, could screw him. In reality, he’ll probably be overpaid by a team that missed out on their #1 target.

Can someone please explain to me Morales’ contract? How is his contract ending yet he is arbitration eligible? Can he become a free agent or will the Angels still control him?

Morales got a six-year deal after coming over from Cuba. That was 2005, so six years would end after this season. However, he’s only accrued just over 2 years of major league service time through 2009, and after 3 years, he’ll be eligible for arbitration, which is after the 2010 season. Players’ rights are controlled by their organizations for six big league seasons, meaning Morales will be an Angel through at least 2012 unless he’s traded, released, or simply non-tendered.

Any thread that involves Boras ends up being a bash sessions. Kinda funny. Thanks vtadave for putting things in perspective. Morales is making a wise business decision. Now all he has to do is go out and take care of business on the field and let the Angels reap the rewards for the next few years.

Whether or not it’s a good move by Morales, I think it’s safe to say that it SUCKS for the Angels.

YES! With Boras as his agent, after Morales loses his skills he’ll end up here in Detroit with a fat contact and hitting .220 with 16 homers! And we’ll have to trade Verlander to free up momey to sign him…I am giddy with anticipation!!!
