Dan Haren Trade Destination Poll

By Mike Axisa | June 14, 2010 at 12:38pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have been meeting about making major changes because of their slow start, and one such move could involve trading ace Dan Haren for a boatload of prospects. Today's poll question:

Man I wish the Cardinals had the farm to get Danny Haren back, but I don’t think the D’Backs are going to trade him

Haren on the Cards would be nice. But we don’t need him now, we have Jeff Suppan!

No idea why they’d trade him. If he’s available I’d give any 3 players out of the Phils system. Brown, Cosart, Singleton/Gose would at least make them pause and think about it, IMO

Who plays in RF next year if the Phillies trade away Brown?

I don’t buy that the D-Backs will deal Haren either. Hes easily one of the more underrated pitchers in baseball (hes averaged a +5 WAR the past 4 seasons) and is locked up through 2013 at a very affordable price. Arizona would be nuts to trade him.

If someone like Haren or Greinke were really available I would love to see the Reds give up the farm for them. They have a good group of young pitchers but need a veteran to front the rotation.

They have the prospects, they have some young pitching that have done something at the ML level (Cueto/Bailey) and they are playing well. Yes they need bullpen help but a strong rotation arm that is good for seven innings a start will help with that as well.

Stole my comment! 🙂 I was just about to post that I’d bet the Reds would be a sleeper team for picking up Haren. I’m not going to say I’m an expert about the Reds, but I can’t imagine that their farm system is a barren waste land, correct?

Wonder what Haren’s numbers look like in Cincy….

        Answered my own question: Haren @ Great American Ballpark: 4 GP, 3 HR, 5 BB, 19 K, .197 BA(against)…

The Reds minor league system is loaded with more solid major league types, I don’t believe they have a single top 25 guy in their system outside of Chapman. What they do have though is young major league caliber pitching that has underperformed in Cueto and Bailey to headline any blockbuster deal.

I think one of those two, Yonder Alonso, Juan Francisco, and another arm would get the job done

Alonso is hurt and less than great. Juan Francisco would swing at this comment if he could. Cueto and Bailey are erratic.

Cueto and Bailey have both shown flashes of front end stuff and both are still of prospect age. Alonso had the injury to his hand last year that typically reduces power for a year, but he is still pretty highly regarded. Francisco has no eye but tremendous power and he has hit at all his stops.

Cueto or Bailey mixed with any 2 of Cozart/Alonso/Fransisco/Heisey would draw some serious consideration.

Oh I agree. I was just saying that if Jocketty were to offer, Arizona would be dumb not to try to work out a deal. Mortgaging the farm for Haren should be out of the question imo.

What do the Mets have that the Dbacks would want?
And before every Mets fan attacks me about the Mets having a good farm system, blah blah blah… I mean, the Dbacks need pitchers. The Mets don’t have many high ceiling pitchers, other than Mejia.

Mejia and Flores could definitely anchor a package for him.

Thank you. That’s exactly what I was thinking of. They have him through team control so they obviously don’t need to get rid of him but more so than that, what exactly do the Mets have that Arizona would want?

That’s a decent haul but personally, I just don’t think they would be swayed by any package that didn’t include Meija, though Arizona seems like they are in absolute desperate need for talent at this point.

Just for reference (to add to your response, for other readers) the suggested package you mentioned has, per Baseball America, the Mets’ 3rd (F-Mart), 5th (Holt), and 9th (Tejada) rated players and Jeurys Familia.

As a met fan, knowing and following the farm system, the player i would be most reluctant to include in that trade is Famillia, he is 19 and throws in the upper 90’s. He dominated last year, not sure about this year but hes underrated and can easily be a top 50 prospect in the majors fairly soon

I was just looking at what the D’Backs gave up for Haren and I don’t think anyone has the players to match what they gave up for him.

I’m not sure Gonzalez was quite as highly regarded then as it seems he should have been based on what he’s done the last two seasons (if that makes any sense). And I don’t think Anderson had made the final leap to top 10 prospect status at the time of the trade (BA #39 pre 2008)

CarGo was regarded as a potential superstar if he stopped striking out as much. He was pretty highly thought of even then.

I was thinking the Rays as a possibility, with them leading the division and being loaded with prospects, but I dunno.

If it were to happen, the Rays would probably have to include Wade Davis in the deal.

The Rays don’t need starting pitching though, acquiring bullpen help seems more likely.

I agree and disagree. If they can somehow squeeze out a trade without giving up anyone on the 25-man, you stick Haren in the rotation and Davis in the bullpen. It might be a waste to put Davis in the ‘pen, but at least you upgrade your 5-man and beef up the ‘pen too. They did a similar thing with Price back in ’08.The only question is if the Rays can up the payroll to accomodate Haren. If all else fails, they could deal Haren again in the offseason to reload on prospects.

EDIT: You’d have to probably trade a guy on the 25 to make room for Haren, or risk moving a valuable guy on waivers to send to AAA. Andy Sonnanstine?

Yeah if someone on the 25 is going to go it’d probably be Sonnanstine, but the thing is that the Rays are talking about lowering payroll next year so it just really seems unlikely that they go after someone with a salary fast approaching 12+MM. It just doesn’t seem very Rays like to give up the prospects required for an area that isn’t really a need. Although Haren sitting at the top of that rotation would be beastly.

And, the Rays are going to really need offense after this season, with Crawford and Pena hitting FA. If they’re going to make a big trade that will help them long term, you bet its for a position player and not a pitcher.

Yeah, I expect them to stay with their rotation and try to acquire a 1B if they can’t retain Pena, which they probably won’t. Jennings will most likely be in the OF next year, maybe they pick up a cheap back up in case he proves not to be ready yet. Who do you think they will target for offensive help during the offseason?

I personally don’t think the D’backs should or will trade Haren by this deadline, his value is lower than it has been in years past and it just doesn’t seem smart to trade away an ace with a reasonably affordable contract for the next 3 and a half seasons.

Trading Haren now wouldn’t make any sense right now. Obviously, have him under control for the next few years at a reasonable price, and if we look to contend in the near future, we have to keep him. Also, I don’t think teams are going to be willing to give up that much for Haren when Oswalt, Lee, and other starters are available for possibly cheaper and a less haul of prospects.
