Astros Discussing Berkman Deals

5:41pm: The White Sox consider Berkman a backup plan since they don't expect to acquire Adam Dunn, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (via Twitter).

4:14pm: The Astros are discussing possible trades involving Lance Berkman, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported this afternoon (via Twitter) that a high-ranking executive told him the Astros could move Berkman and start rebuilding.

Like former teammate Roy Oswalt, who was traded to Philadelphia earlier today, Berkman has a no-trade clause and can veto any deal. About $5.4MM remains on Berkman's $14.5MM salary this season. The Astros hold a $15MM option for next year, but they can buy it out for $2MM. Berkman is hitting .245/.372/.436 so far in 2010.

*crosses fingers for anyone, as we need to rebuild this team* Lets go astros!!!

  2. to where? Hope not the mets

  3. Dave_Gershman 5 years ago

To the White Sox for Brent Morel and Kyle Colligan.

    • Joey Doughnuts 5 years ago

I hope your kidding. I don’t want to lose Morel.

      • Dave_Gershman 5 years ago

A lot of teams fans don’t want to lose top prospects and I don’t blame you, but If the Astros ask Kenny for him and not someone like Danks, Hudson, or Flowers, You have to think he will ship Morel to Round Rock or Corpus Christi. Think about it, they’d be getting draft picks anyway and Morel fits the bill. Plus, (I don’t think this) Many think Viciedo has a better chance to be a solid Major League 3B than Morel. You’d also be getting Lance with a chance to make the post season and go farther than that. Imagine Berkman hitting 3rd or 5th and having Rios, Pauliewood, Berkman, Gordon, 1-Dog, Quentin (not respectively) the first 7 batters in the White Sox order.

        • Joey Doughnuts 5 years ago

I think Viciedo is more likely to be a 1B or DH than a 3B. He is too big and slow to stick it at 3B. Morel is a great gloveman at 3B, and I would much rather lose Danks than Morel. I would even rather we trade Flowers before we trade Morel. Morel and Hudson are our top 2 IMO (of the guys closest to the majors).

          • Dave_Gershman 5 years ago

You don’t want to trade Tyler Flowers.

          • Soxman17 5 years ago

I’d trade Flowers right now if someone wanted him. I don’t think he’s turned out to be what the Sox thought he would, and they are not in a position to have a young catcher on this team any time soon.

      • foxtown 5 years ago

Really? Morel is the guy you’re going to make untouchable? I would do that deal in a second if the Astros sent some cash our way with Berkman.

      • Guest 5 years ago

Despite how much I like Morel, I feel I’d rather part with him than Flowers, Hudson or Viciedo. However if they like Jordan Danks I’d give the Astros him and keep Morel.

    • Way too much to give up for an expensive rental having a lackluster year. There are better options than Berkman out there.

      • Dave_Gershman 5 years ago

He could eventually get a team 2 top draft picks. Colligan isn’t all that special but Berkman could use a change is scenery, U.S. Cellular is better for LHB than Minute Maid, and Berkman brings a possitive presence and a leader, something that the White Sox have, but could obviously use a guy like Berkman who has been playing much better over the past month. You’ll see.

        • VoteForPrado 5 years ago

The White Sox definitely won’t bank on getting those two draft picks, either. I can’t see Berkman getting a multi-year deal, so declining arb would likely just mean a paycut for him. Unless he just hates Chicago and wants to play for a new team that badly. Of course, there is a chance that he regains form and earns a multi-year deal before the season ends. As you said, he’s been swinging it well lately.

      • Dave_Gershman 5 years ago

Overall he is having a bad year, but lately he has been much better and no, there aren’t many options out there that could satisfy the White Sox if Dunn stays.

    • VoteForPrado 5 years ago

I can’t see Berkman bringing in that much in terms of prospects.. He isn’t performing like the Lance Berkman of old and he’s getting paid a bunch. Maybe a B prospect and a whole lot of salary relief.

      • He really isn’t getting paid much at all. He will cost maybe 5 mil for the rest of the year and then can be let go with a team option next year for 2 mil I think. With that said, I agree that he won’t bring much prospect wise, but better than you think IMO.

        • VoteForPrado 5 years ago

$7 million is lot to pay for two months of a struggling player. Houston will have to kick in some cash if they want to get a guy like Morel, and even then I don’t see it happening.

  4. So they’re going to trade Berkman and Oswalt, but not Myers???

    • davengmusic 5 years ago

still over 72 hours left. anything can happen. who’da thought ed wade would actually make a trade where HE was the fleecer?

  5. dejota 5 years ago

As long as Drayton doesn’t personally handle this one as well we’ll be fine….

    we’re screwed.

  6. Yeah I don’t understand the whole Bret Myers thing. I used to think Ed Wade was the dumbest person on the planet, but he gained some respect from me for acquiring Brett Wallace. Flip Lance to angels or white sox. I don’t think the Angels should give up so quickly

    • Angels have no chance to get to the playoffs.

      • icedrake523 5 years ago

They have a chance. Especially since the Rangers historically struggle in August and September.

  7. Yankeeboy11 5 years ago

They need to trade Myers and Berkman already. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Yankees get Berkman to DH since their out on Dunn.

    • The_Silver_Stacker 5 years ago

you never know if the yankees are out of it, they MIGHT be laying low and swoop in and get Dunn if anything amounts to anything solid in talks with the Nats and Rays, but I don’t think anything will happen

    • jeter2blue 5 years ago

Buster Olney reported on twitter that the Yankees and Rays are still possibilities for Dunn

  8. Come onnnn Giants. That high OBP could really be useful in the middle of the lineup.

  9. bevothephenom 5 years ago

why so much intrest in a .245 hitter…..

    • A .245 hitter with 0 protection. He is still one of the most patient hitters in mlb – look at the OBP. I won’t argue that he hasnt’ lost something from previous years, but the potential of him going on a tear with better protection is good. I think he would be a good pickup for a contending team as long as he doesn’t require his option to be picked up.

    • Because hes got a pretty good track record…near .300 career hitter with a good ops. Hes like 34-35 but a change of scenery and he will be a great piece for a team trying to make a playoff push.

    • csg 5 years ago

      .925OPS in July helps

  10. Ferrariman 5 years ago

watch it be something like the blue jays 😀

  11. BattlingRedlegs 5 years ago

    Reds

  12. Tigerfan93 5 years ago

This is a Rosenthal report, so the only two possible teams that could be interested are the Yankees and White Sox.

  13. Can he still play Right Field? If so… send him to Atlanta and let Heyward move to CF…

    • kray1000 5 years ago

Berkman’s days in the outfield are over. He could be useful at first base though with Glaus struggling.

  14. Paul Ryan Stivender 5 years ago

    whycant tthe rays take puma?

  15. progmatinee 5 years ago

How many years does Berkman realistically have left?

  16. averykelly 5 years ago

send him to the tigers with brett myers for brennan boesch and austin jackson

    • Tigerfan93 5 years ago

That is VERY wishful thinking. Why would you give up Boesch AND Jackson for a guy who says he may retire at the end of this contract and a guy who isn’t guaranteed to come back next year?

  17. budman3 5 years ago

Berkman and 4 million dollars to the Rays for either Matt Moore OR Jake McGee OR Alex Torrez and Willy Aybar.

  18. if the A’s had the pieces to get him, could be super fun…almost certainly not happening, but a legit bat in the middle of that lineup could really challenge the Rangers

    • ThinkBlue10 5 years ago

sorry but i think at this point nothing will be enough to challenge the rangers. he would be a nice fit with the rangers though.

  19. ThinkBlue10 5 years ago

berkman and myers to the dodgers for loney

    • Why would they go after Loney when they just got Brett Wallace? Dodgers wouldnt give up Loney for Oswalt so why would they give him up for Berkman and Myers?

      • ThinkBlue10 5 years ago

they didn’t trade loney for oswalt because they wouldn’t have had a replacement for loney but in this deal berkman would be his replacement and we get a pitcher that is needed in our rotation.

  20. Mystro22 5 years ago

Thats why they got Wallace he is going to be here this year. There is no way that Wallace falls under the the stay in the minors for years that is always like an Astro prospect. I have to say if they get at least a solid bat and pitcher in return the might have a solid team in 3 years. Chris Johnson is looking like a good third baseman, and watch out for Rogers son, he is absolutly destroying the ball in CC.

  21. Wouldn’t mind the Braves going after him to platoon with Glaus at 1B. Glaus crushes LHP and Berkman crushes RHP. Gotta do something to keep our advantage over the Phils.

    • As many games as Chipper has missed… Glaus could be moved to 3B those games and Berkman at first.

I’d still like to see him get a shot in Right in Atlanta…

To cincy for maybe maloney, fraizer and a lower guy

    • Ferrariman 5 years ago

they got rid of him for a reason ya know….

and it isn’t to get him back and give up one of their top prospects in the process =/

  23. tmengd 5 years ago

are those prospects from the White sox Brent Morel and Kyle Colligan and good? I am an Astros fan and don’t know anything about the White Sox Farm. Also

I think the Astros got a pretty good deal from Oswalt. Wallace is a top 25 prospect if I am not mistaken. So worked out pretty well.

  24. jctrock 5 years ago

Now this is HUGE! The White Sox are no longer considering Adam Dunn. Go Giants! Get Adam Dunn on the roster! The Giants are the only serious team at this point for Dunn.

    • Ferrariman 5 years ago

the rays are considered the frontrunners and they have a deeper farm than the giants…

      just sayin.

  25. Guest 5 years ago

Send him to the Angels w/ cash for Reckling, or w/ cash to the Rays for Jake McGee. The Astros could use more left handed pitching prospects in their system (even w/ getting Happ today)

  26. I think the Sox shouldn’t move Morel because although he probably doesnt have the greatest upside of all the prospects he has proven to be the most consistant and he can really throw some leather at 3rd and the power has to come some time. Especialy at the cell

  27. I wonder if the Sox can work a deal for Berkman and Myers without giving up Hudson. Send Hudson back to AAA to work on his control and put Myers in the 4-5 slot in the rotation.

    • It ain’t gonna happen. Berkman may get traded but Myers will be in a Houston Uniform till season’s over and will likely get resigned

    • Myers won’t get dealt and he will likely sign back with Astros after having an amazing year.

  28. Yoni Pollak 5 years ago

as a stros fan, id like to see him stay…if he were to leave Id want him to go to TB…I think Moore and Brignac for Berkman is good

  29. mbarc14 5 years ago

The Dodgers should package Manny, Mcdonald, and Elbert for Berkman and Myers. It would give the Astros some payroll relief with Manny gone after the year. Manny and El Caballo can share LF and Bourn can cover CF and RF, he’s fast. The Dodgers would get their starter and Berkman could play LF. Get Ned on the phone!!

    • Yoni Pollak 5 years ago

lol…so many things wrong with that…Manny and Lee in same outfield is awful…Where goes Pence? and why would Stros want Manny

Here you go White Sox. Everyone is selling low so get in on the action. A one time low rate we will give you Brent Morel and Scott Linebrink for Lance Berkman. The contracts could off set each other a little. If you throw in Brett Myers we will give you Daniel Hudson. This is advantageous for the White Sox because you get a switch hitting power hitter that can play good defense at first to spell Paulie and possibly a 4th or 5th starter that can pitch out of the bullpen come the post season when you don’t really need 5 starting pitchers. The Astros would be getting a potential star in Morel and a pitcher that probably won’t cut it in the AL and could use a rebuilding team like Houston to put it all together and figure it out. Really it fits both teams and I don’t think either Houston or Chicago get “fleeced”. Plus Houston just traded for 1B Brett Wallace from Toronto and he looks to be major league ready.

  31. coldgoldenfalstaff 5 years ago

I’m a White Sox and Astros fan and that Morel/Linebrink for Berkman suggestion won’t fly. And if Kenny Williams gave up Hudson for Myers, I’d be shocked.

I could see the Astros getting lesser prospects from the Sox like maybe Gartrell and Harrell for Berkman if Houston pays half his salary and the buyout, and Puma doesn’t want the option exercised for waiving the NTC.

I don’t see Myers going anywhere unless the Astros are offered really good prospects. They want to keep him to take over as staff ace, and the return would have to be over-value for them to change their minds.

  32. jwsox 5 years ago

I would be down for berk, a nice switch hitter who hits for average and power from both sides and plays very good D at 1st and could actually play the corner spots in the OF considering thats how he came up. He would be a great #5 hitter for the sox or even a #4 …I would say give up brent morell, gartrell and a mid level pitcher or two, torres and marquez….with the stros pay something like half his salary…

I give up morell because with the way vicedio is hitting, and his D at 3rd isnt that bad. Yes he has had his fair share of errors but lets not forget he just got called up to the bigs, no one can expect a guy to play gold glove caliber D in his first stint in the bigs right away. If he learns with Omar being there and can play medicore D at 3rd he will be fine
