Olney On Sizemore, Jones, Votto, Pujols

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 17, 2011 at 10:30am CDT

Grady Sizemore tells ESPN.com’s Buster Olney that it's "miserable" to have to sit and watch others play. The center fielder, who is on track to be ready for Opening Day after microfracture knee surgery, says he can't wait to return to the playing field. Here are Olney’s thoughts on Sizemore, plus rumors from around the league:

  • Sizemore’s contract includes an $8.5MM option for 2012, so within a year the Indians will have to decide whether to exercise the option, let him hit free agency or trade him.
  • The Yankees are the frontrunners for Andruw Jones, Olney reports (on Twitter).
  • Joey Votto’s three-year, $38MM extension makes sense for both sides, in Olney’s opinion.
  • It’s apparent that talks between the Cardinals and Albert Pujols “are not going as smoothly as the Cardinals want,” Olney writes. Click here to vote on Pujols’ future in St. Louis.

I’m starting to hope that Albert does walk. I’m very curious to see what he’d get on the open market.

I have a hard time believing Sizemore will leave the Tribe.

I have a hard time imagining that he’ll remain with them. They are in complete rebuild mode and a healthy and productive Sizemore could net a very nice return in July.

Everyone knows Jones wants to be in a Braves uniform next season. People will deny it, but they are lying.

You’re delusional. His ego blew the hell up like escobar and he started being overly cocky on everything. His offense went down and he was just a horrible hitter in the last years with the braves.

It’s possible, it he gets hurt again or has a miserable year the Tribe will let him go no doubt.

No, Crawford LF, If they could get grady, he would be in center, Kalish in LF when Drew leaves. And would trade ells, but they wont get grady

Jacoby in RF in Fenway might be scary. But I agree with Green_Monster even with his typo. Kalish would probably be the RF if they got Granderson. But it probably will never happen.

Scary is exactly the word I word use. I have a feeling he would have a broken hip and 3 fractured vertebrae in a week if he had to deal with the short wall. Oh, how did Granderson come into the conversation?

He didn’t. Je suis en retard. I meant Grady Sizemore but put Granderson for some reason. Two years ago I also bid on Tom Sizemore for my fantasy pool.

Why is that? Because you are more connected to the situation than he is? I have no problem believing that things are going as well as the Cards would like…but of course I’m not a fan of the team.

Because 90 percent of the crap that comes out of Busters mouth is BS.
“Cardinals considering a trade that would send Albert Pujols to Philadelphia for Ryan Howard” COME ON! the guy tries all he can to stir stuff up because he has absolutely nothing else to talk about.

Besides, the only thing anyone has said about negotiations not going smoothly is the Spring Training deadline, which we’ve already known about for the past year. Albert simply doesn’t negotiate while he plays. It’s not news.

Of course the Pujols talks aren’t going too well for the Cards. He is going to cost them a fortune!

Plus baseball analysts wouldnt have a job if there wasnt a roller coaster process between Pujols and the Cards.. God forbid contract negotiations go smoothy for once.

How would Olney know when no body else does. Everyone is mum on the issue. I call BS.

Yep, I’m not an insider, and can’t read the article. But since no one else has any clue about how talks are going, I have to assume it is all speculation by Olney. If anything actually gets leaked it will first come from one of the St. Louis writers. If I hear something from Strauss or Goold, I will listen.

Im just speculating, but Buster Onley never has anything positive to say about the Cardinals situation.. This is just me speculating.. But he is choosing to talk about things he really has no idea about, in fact no one seems to know the details… again, just speculating.

When you say something is “apparent” you are inferring that it is more than just speculation. The only thing “apparent” is that Olney needed something to write about.

Red Sox should make a move on him for next year after JD is out of here. Unless we can get Drew to come back for less. Would still take Grady over Drew.

The Sox have plenty of viable outfielders to replace Drew. Save the $$$ to extend Buch and Lester when the time comes

Lester has been extended last year and Buch has at lest 2 years before he is.

Sizemore has an unusual contract for the 2011 and 2012 season. If Grady is traded before the end of the 2011 season, then his 2012 contract option becomes a “player option” (he forfeits the $ 500K buyout)and his contract value increases by 10 % for the 2012 season.. In other words.. if the Indians trade Grady at mid season in 2011, he become a 1/2 season rental with a player option for 2012@ $ 9.35 MM.

Or the Tribe could keep Sizemore for the entirety of 2011, let him rebuild his value, prove that he is healthy, pick up his option and trade him in the off-season (or after the season starts). The receiving team gets Sizemore for the full 2012 season.

Anyone else find it strange that while Olney is reporting that the Pujols signing isn’t going as smoothly as the Cards want, Votto is inked to a pretty big extension. That’s great and all, but Pujols and Votto have the same agent. Seems to me that the agent was probably trying to tie up the loose ends and get Voot’s finalized before jumping into Pujols.
